Early Modern Portuguese History

The aim of this thesis is to study the government of the “Estado da Índia” by D. João de Castro (governor and viceroy between 1545 and 1548). His rule witnessed a period of political and military tensions, during the war with the sultanate of Gujarat (its peak being reached with the siege of the Portuguese fortress of Diu, in 1546) and Bijapur, and the reinforcement of the policy and strategy of king D. João III for the Indies. Castro’s government was marked by the military campaigns he enforced and the image of power that he himself projected. Thus, this thesis is aimed at understanding the role of the government of D. João de Castro in the construction of the “Estado da Índia” and the Portuguese presence in Asia. At the same time, it surveys the historiography about this figure of the Portuguese expansion in search of an understanding of the processes by which Castro was made into a myth, along with offering a critical and objective vision of his government.
To this purpose, the thesis divides into four, departing from an overall account of the history of “Estado da Índia” to come to an analysis of the government of D. João de Castro. The first part reassesses the previous knowledge about the Portuguese presence in Asia during the first half of the 16th century, highlighting the main elements in the formation of the “Estado da Índia” as the setting the second part, D. João de Castro’s government. The second part thus utilises a more narrative approach to the personal background and career of D. João de Castro, beginning with his cursus honorum before nomination as governor of the “Estado da Índia” in 1545. From this point onwards, his government is chronologically analysed. The third and fourth parts are the core of the critical and historiographical evaluation of this government. Here, warfare organization and administration are discussed, evaluating the human, material and financial means, with the aim to reconstruct and understand the process by which D. João de Castro sustained his campaigns logistically. Following this, the political and symbolic impact of his rule is examined, focusing on the building of a princely court in Goa, assessing the practices of government, the reinforcement of the networks maintained by the governor and the construction of an imperial image for the “Estado da Índia”. All these elements were aimed at centralising and strengthening the real and symbolic power of the Portuguese king through his highest official in Asia. Lastly, the thesis analyses the ways in which the memory of this governor and of his governance were created, lasting in the Portuguese collective memory, from its origins in chronicles from this period and from projects commemorating D. João de Castro led by his grandchildren, who used his memory for their self-aggrandising.
More than a historiographical exercise of revision, this thesis seeks to contribute to the understanding of the formation of the “Estado da Índia” and the Portuguese maritime empire in the 16th century. The government of D. João de Castro is then understood as part of the strategy of king D. João III to organise a vast Empire of which the “Estado da Índia” was but one component, a piece projected into a diversified whole.

A presente tese de doutoramento tem como objecto de estudo a governação do “Estado da Índia” em tempo de D. João de Castro (governador e vice-rei, entre 1545 e 1548). A sua acção decorreu num conturbado período de tensão político-militar, no âmbito da guerra movida aos sultanatos do Guzerate (cujo principal momento se materializou no cerco à fortaleza portuguesa de Diu em 1546) e de Bijapur, e de reforço da política e da estratégia Joaninas para a Ásia. Este governo ficou indelevelmente marcado pelas campanhas militares empreendidas e pela imagem de poder que o próprio Castro consolidou. Assim, esta investigação procura compreender qual o papel do governo de D. João de Castro na construção do “Estado da Índia” e da presença portuguesa na Ásia. Paralelamente, pretende-se também revisitar a historiografia sobre esta figura da Expansão portuguesa e captar os processos pelos quais foi mitificada, permitindo uma visão crítica e objectiva quanto à sua acção governativa.
Para tal, organizou-se o estudo em quarto partes, passando de uma visão ampla da história do “Estado da Índia” para um estudo analítico da governação de D. João de Castro. A primeira parte reavalia aquilo que sabemos sobre a presença portuguesa na Ásia na primeira metade do século XVI, destacando as principais linhas de força na formação do “Estado da Índia”, delineando assim o pano de fundo sobre o qual a governação em estudo se foca. A segunda parte, de carácter narrativo, segue o percurso pessoal e a carreira de D. João de Castro, explicitando o seu cursus honorum antes de ser nomeado capitão-mor e governador do “Estado da Índia” em 1545, e avaliando exaustivamente o seu governo, seguindo a sua evolução cronológica. A terceira e quarta partes constituem o cerne da avaliação crítica e historiográfica deste governo. Num primeiro momento debruçamo-nos sobre a organização e administração da guerra. Procuramos reconstituir e apreender o processo pelo qual D. João de Castro conseguiu sustentar logisticamente as suas campanhas, avaliando os meios humanos, materiais e financeiros para tal. De seguida, examinamos o impacto político e simbólico deste governo. Observando a estruturação de uma corte em Goa, visámos compreender as suas práticas governativas, o reforço das redes clientelares de o Governador e a construção de uma imagem imperial do “Estado da Índia”, elementos que concorreram para centrar e fortalecer o poder, real e simbólico, do mais alto oficial régio na Ásia. Por fim, analisámos a forma como a memória deste governador e do seu governo se firmou na memória colectiva portuguesa, fruto da cronística da época e de alguns projectos memorialistas dos seus netos, que procuraram aproveitar a figura de D. João de Castro para engrandecerem a sua própria acção.
Mais do que um simples revisionismo historiográfico, esta tese pretende contribuir para a compreensão da formação do “Estado da Índia” e do próprio Império Marítimo Português no século XVI. A governação de D. João de Castro é assim entendida como parte de uma estratégia de D. João III na estruturação de um extenso Império em que o “Estado da Índia” era compreendido como uma dos componentes enquanto peça projectada e concretizada num todo plural.

MILITARY LIVES IN THE MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN IBERIAN WORLD
This volume considers the multifaceted textual corpus of military vidas from across the medieval and early modern Iberian world. The military vida is here defined capaciously as a retrospective account of a life marked by military service. It may take any form, including memoir, biography, history, fiction, poetry, or the bureaucratic narratives that were required for career advancement. By bringing a diverse set of disciplinary practices to the study of military lives and their textual manifestations, spanning the global empires of Spain and Portugal, this volume aims to explore these works as aesthetic laboratories, engines of knowledge production, and sites of ideological articulation. We welcome a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches to the study of military vidas from the medieval period through the eighteenth century, including but not limited to the following:

• Affect theory and the history of emotions
• Archival studies and the constitution of a military-autobiographical "canon"
• Comparative studies
• Material history and the history of the book
• Military ethics and theories of warfare
• Narrative theory and narratology
• Queer theory and theories of gender and sexuality
• Theories of subjectivity and self-fashioning
• The soldier as laborer
• The soldier as social problem
• Soldiers and the production of knowledge
• Rebellious soldiers and the representation of mutiny
• Contemporary appropriations of the military vida, including intersections with imperiofilia and imperiofobia

Em finais do século XVI, devido a obras de fortificação, os canais de navegação da barra do rio Tejo começaram a assorear, a estreitar e a apresentar uma profundidade menor, afetando fortemente a navegação, sobretudo dos navios da carreira da Índia, caracterizados pelas suas grandes dimensões. O maior problema verificou-se na carreira de
São Gião (São Julião), que é o canal Norte de navegação e o principal para os navios que se deslocavam para Lisboa, ficando mais sujeito a ser palco de encalhes e de naufrágios. Este estudo pretende contribuir para a discussão destes assuntos, tentando ao mesmo tempo compreender quando é que a carreira da Alcáçova, o canal Sul, terá começado a ser usada pela navegação para se entrar no Tejo e em que condições.

In late sixteenth century, due to fortification works, the navigation channels of the Tagus river rill began to silt, to narrow and to present a smaller depth, strongly affecting the shipping, especially carreira da India’s ships, themselves characterized by its large dimensions. The largest concern was the carreira de São Gião (São Julião), the northern
navigation channel, and the most important one for vessels on their way to Lisbon, which became more susceptible of being the stage of beaching and shipwrecks. This study aims to contribute to the discussion of these subjects, while attempting, at the same time, to
understand when the carreira de Alcáçova, in the South channel, started being used by navigation to enter the Tagus river, and under which conditions.

RESUMO A aquisição de cativos portugueses antes do estabelecimento de relações diplomáticas com as potências islâmicas-a paz com Marrocos foi assinada em 1774 e com as regências otomanas do Norte de África só no século XIX-implicou negociações pontuais e a troca de presentes diplomáticos que incluíram produtos portugueses e estrangeiros. Procura-se perceber se é possível reconstituir redes de comércio e se este tipo de trocas teve significado em termos culturais, constituindo uma forma de abastecimento suplementar dos potentados locais em alimentos, tecidos, utensílios domésticos, de entre outros. ABSTRACT The acquisition of portuguese captives prior to the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Islamic powers-the peace with Morocco was signed in 1774 and with the otomman regencies only in the 19th century-entailed occasional negotiations and the exchange of diplomatic gifts that included portuguese and foreign products. This paper aims to know if this kind of exchange had cultural significance and was a way of suplementar supplying the local potentates with food, cloth, household items, etc., and also if it possible to reconstruct trade networks.

No antigo regime, a justiça era considerada a principal atividade do rei, confundindo-se com administração e manutenção da ordem social e política. Contudo, o arbítrio do poder real era limitado pelos poderes informais e normações ligadas ao direito local. Neste artigo, analisamos os conflitos de jurisdição dos ofícios municipais que definiram a justiça no luso império, especialmente em seus desígnios de ultramar.

Resumo: Na primeira parte desta tese são identificados e analisados os problemas associados à navegação da carreira da Índia no trajecto entre os Açores e Lisboa, se bem que estando integrados numa problemática mais geral da rota global e das próprias relações políticas e económicas de Portugal com outros reinos europeus. Não esquecendo as debilidades da construção naval, a degradação estrutural das embarcações e a sua sobrecarga com mercadorias, assim como as condicionantes da vida a bordo dos navios, veremos como esses aspectos pesavam fortemente no sucesso das viagens, tornando ainda mais difícil a chegada a Lisboa. Aos perigos ligados ao decurso da navegação e da própria realidade da geografia física, podendo levar a naufrágios e a encalhes, somava-se o risco de encontro com corsários e piratas, cuja presença entre os Açores e a costa portuguesa revelou-se bastante activa. Outros problemas surgiam com o descaminho e o contrabando de mercadorias, não apenas de especiarias mas também de escravos.
Por sua vez, na segunda parte estudaremos as medidas adoptadas pela Coroa para tentar combater os problemas atrás indicados. Isso passará pela existência de estruturas de apoio à navegação, de um sistema de defesa e de informação, bem como pela promulgação de legislação. Assim, veremos os Açores como local fundamental de escala da carreira da Índia, mas também Cascais a prestar um apoio final inevitável, inclusive através dos pilotos locais. No plano defensivo as armadas da costa e das ilhas tinham um papel basilar, do mesmo modo que a construção de fortificações ajudou a impedir ataques inimigos e beneficiou a protecção que se pretendia dar aos navios que regressavam a Portugal, marcando a paisagem cultural marítima. Para se estabelecer comunicação entre os Açores e Lisboa e manter actualizado o sistema defensivo, havia um sistema de informação em funcionamento baseado no envio de navios de aviso. Algumas das notícias que circulavam vinham directamente do estrangeiro, onde os espiões ao serviço de Portugal iam recolhendo dados sobre o destino das armadas de corsários ou outras que se preparavam para diferentes territórios ultramarinos. Por fim, veremos a promulgação de legislação como forma de tentar evitar o descaminho e o contrabando de mercadorias, assim como outras medidas tomadas de forma extraordinária.

Abstract: In the first part of this thesis, the difficulties associated with the navigation of the carreira da Índia on the route between the Azores and Lisbon are identified and analysed, although these are integrated into a more general problem of the global route and of Portugal's own political and economic relations with other European kingdoms. Without forgetting the weaknesses of shipbuilding, the structural degradation of vessels and the fact of these being often overloaded with merchandise, as well as the constraints of life on board of the ships, we will see how these aspects weighed heavily on the success of the trips, making it even more difficult to arrive to Lisbon. In addition to the dangers linked to the course of navigation and the very reality of physical geography, which could lead to shipwrecks and embankments, there was a risk of encounter with corsairs and pirates, whose presence between the Azores and the Portuguese coast proved to be very active. Other problems arose with the loss and smuggling of goods, not only of spices but also of slaves.
On the second part the focus will be placed on the measures taken by the Crown to try to combat the aforementioned problems. This will involve support structures for shipping, a defense and information system, and the enactment of legislation. Thus, we will see the Azores as a fundamental stopover location of the carreira da Índia, but also Cascais providing an inevitable final support, including through the local navigators. On the defensive level, the coastal and the island's navy forces had played a fundamental role, just as the construction of fortifications helped prevent enemy attacks and benefited the protection that was intended to provide to ships returning to Portugal, determining the maritime cultural landscape. In order to establish communication between the Azores and Lisbon and keep the defense system up to date, there was an information system in place based on sending warning ships. Some of the news that circulated came directly from abroad, where the spies at Portugal's service were collecting data on the fate of the corsairs' navy forces or others that were preparing for different overseas territories. Finally, we will see the enactment of legislation as a way of trying to prevent the loss and smuggling of goods, as well as other extraordinary measures.

Este artículo trata de las normas jurídicas establecidas por las autoridades portuguesas para regular la construcción de hornos, en particular los hornos de pan. Su objetivo era impedir que estas estructuras causasen daños a la vecindad. El análisis de estas normas jurídicas permite presenciar un cambio socio-ambiental ocurrido en Portugal durante la transición de la Edad Media a la Edad Moderna: la polución del aire pasó a formar parte de los problemas de salubridad pública.
This article is about the legal norms set forth by the Portuguese authorities to regulate the construction of ovens, particularly, bread ovens. These norms were aimed at preventing their structure causing harm to the neighborhood. The analysis of the aforementioned norms allows us to witness a socio-environmental change that took place during the transition from the Middle Ages to Modern Times in Portugal: the air pollution became part of the public health agenda.
