Early Modern Captivity

Module Abstract: This module consists of two 75-minute lesson plans to be taught in a general history or literature survey course to show the enduring interconnections between the Mediterranean and Spain through the example of one novel by Cervantes.

This project was completed with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and sponsorship from the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library during the 2018 NEH Summer Institute “Thresholds of Change: Modernity and Transformation in the Mediterranean, 1400 – 1700,” June – July 2018, Collegeville, MN.

The important role that the Mediterranean played in England’s development as an imperial power in the early modern period has begun to be appreciated, but more work is required to properly historicize the interactions which occurred during this time and understand their impact. This article argues that to do this it is necessary to move beyond generalized interpretations and examine the impact of encounter at the individual level. Moreover, through examining the experiences of one such sojourner, it demonstrates how a focus on acculturative change can provide novel insights into the consequences of historical encounters between European and non-European peoples.

Whether by falling prey to Algerian corsairs or crashing onto the desert shores of Western Sahara, a handful of Americans in the first years of the Republic found themselves enslaved in a system that differed so markedly from nineteenth century U.S. slavery that some contemporaries and modern scholars hesitate to categorize their experiences as 'slavery.' Sears uses a comparative approach, placing African enslavement of Americans and Europeans in the context of Mediterranean and Ottoman slaveries, while individually investigating the system of slavery in Algiers and Western Sahara. This work illuminates the commonalities and peculiarities of these slaveries, while contributing to a growing body of literature that showcases the flexibility of slavery as an institution.

This research paper seeks to illustrate the functioning of the different ransoming agents in early modern Spain and how did they help to develop the Mediterranean by that time. The essay also focuses on different moments of the captive life and how the activities helped to establish a communication network between Spain and Africa in a time that the sea was an obstacle both physical and psychological.

Nei secoli dell’età moderna, migliaia di individui furono catturati da pirati e corsari che infestavano le acque del Mediterraneo e ridotti in schiavitù in terra d’«infedeli». Si trattò di un fenomeno reciproco, che vide cristiani condotti schiavi in terra ottomana e musulmani fatti schiavi in Europa. Una volta caduti prigionieri, essi erano venduti, costretti ai lavori forzati, al remo nelle galere, oppure destinati al riscatto, mettendo in moto un intero settore economico; del riscatto dei cristiani schiavi in Maghreb si occupavano istituti, magistrature cittadine e Ordini religiosi. Il libro ricostruisce la storia e l’attività di uno degli indiscussi protagonisti di quel commercio: l’Ordine della Mercede. Grazie allo studio dei libri di contabilità delle missioni di redenzione inviate in Nord Africa dalla fine del Cinquecento al primo Settecento e volte alla liberazione dei captivi di nazionalità spagnola, l’Autore mostra come i redentori mercedari obbedissero alle direttive del potere politico e come quell’opera caritativa fosse obbligata a piegarsi a interessi economici e nazionali.

La Monarquía hispánica aprovechó la situación de Baleares en el Mediterráneo occidental para su política norteafricana, en la que las islas participaron a nivel militar, diplomático e informativo. El corso musulmán contra los dominios hispanos fue más relevante que el cristiano y aumentó durante la guerra contra la Sublime Puerta. Lo más habitual fueron las acciones marítimo-costeras a pequeña escala, mientras que los grandes ataques contra localidades amuralladas o interiores fueron sucesos extraordinarios. Los súbditos del Rey Católico también se armaron en corso, especialmente contra el litoral argelino. Las Baleares no respondieron conjuntamente a la amenaza, pero sí mejoraron sus defensas según la estrategia defensiva hispana, mejorando y reforzando progresivamente los mecanismos tradicionales con elementos artillados y fortificados, triunfando el planteamiento terrestre sobre el marítimo, pero sin un predominio de los componentes estáticos sobre los dinámicos. Las defensas fueron más efectivas de lo que se había admitido, forzando a los atacantes a retirarse en muchas ocasiones y capturando a los musulmanes, que fueron vendidos como esclavos. Sin embargo, tampoco debemos exagerar su capacidad, puesto que los corsarios capturaron a numerosos isleños y los condujeron a «tierra de moros».

RESUMEN:
¿Por qué se dirige don Quijote hacia Zaragoza en la Segunda parte? Este artículo señala el trasfondo histórico y biográfico que da sentido al viaje menipeo del hidalgo. Si al principio del libro de 1615 don Quijote sigue la idea del cura pretendiendo ir a luchar contra el Turco, el episodio de la cueva de Ruidera interpretado a la luz del romance simultáneamente retrospectivo y profético de Gaiferos, muestra que el encantamiento padecido por Montesinos, Durandarte, Belerma y Dulcinea se corresponde simbólicamente con el de los cautivos en Argel.

ABSTRACT:
Why does don Quijote go towards Saragossa in the Second part? This article indicates the historical and biographical background that gives sense to the menipean trip of the hidalgo. If at the beginning of the book of 1615 don Quijote follows the idea of the priest trying to go to fight against the Turk, the episode of the cave of Ruidera interpreted in the light of the prophetic romance of Gaiferos, sample that the enchantment suffered by Montesinos, Durandarte, Belerma and Dulcinea corresponds symbolically with the sitiutation of the captives in Algiers. Muchas fórmulas se han utilizado para darle a la 'Historia del capitán cautivo' la etiqueta genérica que le corresponde. Clasificada, primero, como novela fronteriza de aire morisco –por la fuerte presencia de lo musulmán en sus líneas– y más tarde como novela de cautivo, no falta quien le da aún el apellido de picaresca, de aventuras a lo bizantino o, incluso, en los últimos años, de relación soldadesca. La presente comunicación intentará argumentar su pertenencia al grupo de relatos de cautiverio, atendiendo, en todo momento, a la profunda asimilación que hizo Cervantes, el novelista excautivo, de este particular subgénero narrativo.

La guerra hispano-otomana provocó la captura de numerosos súbditos de ambas partes. Los musulmanes llegaban como cautivos y eran esclavizados en los territorios del Rey Católico, muchos durante el resto de sus vidas, mientras que otros pudieron recuperar su libertad y regresar a sus lugares de origen, salvo aquellos que se convirtieron y decidieron permanecer en territorio cristiano. El caso de las Islas Baleares no fue una excepción. En este texto se analiza la llegada y esclavización de ochocientos setenta y dos musulmanes en el archipiélago por medio de la guerra y el comercio durante el siglo XVI. También estudia cómo se marcharon algunos de ellos hacia territorio musulmán tras recuperar su libertad, una vez conseguido el dinero necesario para pagar el pasaje o como parte del intercambio por cristianos cautivos en el norte de África.
