moreResumen: En Colombia, como en otros países, las manifestaciones culturales vinculadas a territorios rurales específicos —corregimientos, municipios, regiones— suelen verse y categorizarse como actividades folclóricas. Al referirse en esos términos, es frecuente que se les atribuyan una serie de ideas y conceptos, entre ellos, se asume que tienen una amplia trayectoria en el tiempo, que han permanecido invariables por generaciones y que son representativas de la comunidad. Tomando como punto de partida el bullerengue, el cual es una expresión músicodancística y festiva del municipio de María La Baja —Bolívar, Colombia— reconocida usualmente como una manifestación folclórica, miraremos de qué manera estas ideas que el término “folclor” le otorga a esta actividad corresponden en realidad con su práctica. Es decir, si bien el concepto de “folclor” ha tenido una fuerte crítica por las ideas inherentes al mismo que acabamos de mencionar —la supuesta tradicionalidad, inmutabilidad de la expresión y representatividad— son escasos los trabajos que en Colombia han documentado con soporte empírico la manera en la que aplican o no. A partir de entrevistas a practicantes del bullerengue, de trabajo de campo en la comunidad, de observación participante del festival de bullerengue del municipio y de revisión de fuentes documentales, el presente artículo contrasta los datos empíricos sobre la práctica de esta expresión con los conceptos asociados al folclor, para entender de qué forma la folclorización del bullerengue contribuye o no a una comprensión del fenómeno y afecta los procesos de apropiación y visibilización de esta práctica cultural. Este es un ejemplo de cómo efectos similares pueden acontecer con cualquier otra manifestación cultural catalogada bajo este término.
Abstract: In Colombia, and in many other countries, cultural manifestations linked to specific rural territories (villages, towns, regions) are often seen and categorized as folkloric activities. When referring to these manifestations with this term (folklore), they are attributed a series of ideas and concepts; among them, they are assumed to have a broad trajectory over time, which have remained unchanged for generations, and which are representative of the community. Taking bullerengue as a starting point, which is a music-dance and festive expression of the municipality of Maria la Baja -Bolivar- usually recognized as a folkloric manifestation, we will look at how these ideas and concepts that the term “folklore” bestows to this activity, actually correspond to their practice. That is to say, although the concept of “folklore” has been strongly criticized by the ideas inherent to the same, that we have just mentioned (the supposed traditionality, immutability and representativeness), there are few works that in Colombia have documented with empirical support the way in which they may or may not apply. Thus, based on interviews with bullerengue practitioners, fieldwork in the community, participant observation of the municipality’s bullerengue festival and review of documentary sources, this article contrasts the empirical data on the practice of this expression with the concepts related to folklore, to understand how the folklorization of bullerengue contributes or not to an understanding of the phenomenon and affects the processes of appropriation and visibility of this cultural practice. This as an example of how this same affectation can happen with any other cultural manifestation cataloged under this term.
