Correspondence Analysis

In French Guiana, inselbergs in the form of granite outcrops rise abruptly from the surrounding rain forest. They constitute isolated islands of a special type of vegetation restricted to this peculiar substrate. Shrub granitic vegetation, organized in thickets on open exposed rocks of inselbergs, are described using the Braun-Blanquet method combined with Correspondence Analysis. This phytosociological study revealed only one particular shrub community on each inselberg, including predominantly evergreen and sclerophyllous shrubs, especially microphanerophytes, belonging to the Clusiaceae, Myrtaceae and Bombacaceae. These outcrop communities exhibit species endemic to the Guianas region and also species rare in French Guiana. Affinities with flora of other inselbergs and vegetation types in South America are examined and discussed. Reasons for observed floristic and structural changes in each community are also discussed.

Sowohl Vatroslav Jagić als auch Hugo Schuchardt haben einen immensen Nachlass an Korrespondenzen hinterlassen. Auch wenn ihre Forschungsgebiete auf den ersten Blick unterschiedlich waren (Jagić als „Vater der modernen Slawistik“, Schuchardt als DER Romanist) so hatten beide ein großes Interesse an der Verwandtschaft zischen den europäischen Sprachen und auch die Herkunft selbiger. Jagić kann in diesem Kontext nicht genug erwähnt werden, seine Leistungen für die Linguistik im Allgemeinen und die Slawistik im Besonderen suchen noch heute ihresgleichen. Der Briefwechsel der beiden ist nicht durchgängig wissenschaftlicher Natur, auch private Ereignisse (wie Urlaube, Ausflüge, familiäre Vorkomnisse sowie Krankheiten in der Familie usw.) werden angesprochen. Ebenso wird Bezug auf das aktuelle tagespolitische Geschehen, vor allem die Situation der Slawen in der Habsburgermonarchie (welche teilweise direkten Einfluss auf Jagićs universitäre Laufbahn hat) genommen. Die Korrespondenz gibt aber nicht nur Einblick in das Leben zweier großer Forscher sondern auch einen Überblick über das Entstehen eines einzigartigen Netzwerks von Linguisten in Europa und darüber hinaus.

Multivariate methods have been widely used for revealing the structures of communities, and in this paper we explore one particular method, namely correspondence analysis (also called reciprocal averaging), for studying humus profiles by the 'method of small volumes'. The present study was done on humus profiles under holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia), an evergreen Mediterranean species, in the High Atlas of Morocco. Three sites (1500 m, 1700 m, 1900 m altitude) and 2 years (1999 and 2002) were compared. The humus form is Dysmull (mull with thick litter horizons), with variations in the thickness of the OL (entire leaves), OF (fragmented leaves with faecal pellets) and A (hemorganic) horizons according to altitude and year. The dead leaves are rapidly incorporated into holorganic (earthworm, insect) and hemorganic (enchytraeid) animal faeces, which form the bulk of the OF and A horizons. The S horizon (weathering parent rock) shows the greatest development of the root system. As altitude increases more fresh litter (OL) or more humified organic matter (OF, A) is accumulated. Variation from year to year is depicted by opposite differences in the amount of entire oak leaves and of dead roots. Humus components (classes) are used as active (main) variables, after standardization of their means and variances. The addition of numerous passive (additional) variables, standardized in the same way as active variables, enabled us to understand the influence of biological and climatic effects on the composition of humus profiles and soil trophic networks.

The German ethnologist Theodor Koch-Grünberg (1872-1924) became one of the world’s leading Americanists of his era after having successfully concluded two expeditions to Amazonia. Between 1903 and 1905 he studied indigenous peoples inhabiting the regions of the rivers Rio Negro, Vaupés, and Japurá in northwestern Brazil; between 1911 and 1913 he traveled through northern Brazil and Venezuela investigating local Amerindian communities. He contacted dozens of indigenous peoples, studied their mythology, material culture, and languages. Koch-Grünberg maintained a scientific correspondence with some of the best-informed anthropologists of his time, including Adolf Bastian, Franz Boas, Arnold van Gennep and Paul Rivet. He also exchanged letters with Brazilian colleagues such as João Capistrano de Abreu (1853-1927), Teodoro Sampaio (1855-1937), and Affonso d’Escragnolle Taunay (1876-1958). Through an analysis of primary sources – the correspondence held at the Theodor Koch-Grünberg Archive of the Philipps-Universität Marburg in Germany – this article aims at contributing both to the history of Brazilian social thought and the history of German ethnology by contextualizing these relations within the broader context of social exchanges. Therefore, the history of anthropology should be written in the same way as Koch-Grünberg imagined ethnology: as an international science, based on humanistic principles and grounded on social relations.

It is well known that Charles Hermite kept an intense correspondence with many of the world's leading mathematicians of his time. This paper focuses on Hermite's letters to Francisco Gomes Teixeira, a Portuguese mathematician , who exchanged letters with Hermite for more than twenty years. Se realizó una caracterización de la situación educativa de Colombia. Para ello, se emplean datos del Instituto Colombiano para la Evaluación de la Educación (ICFES) con el fin de examinar la relación existente entre el nivel educativo de los docentes y los resultados académicos obtenidos por sus respectivos estudiantes a nivel secundario en Colombia. Del mismo modo, se analiza la incidencia de la zona (urbana o rural) en el cual los estudiantes reciben su formación, el coeficiente de GINI y la tasa de desempleo, como indicadores socioeducativos. La metodología empleada es la del análisis de correspondencia canónico. Se encuentra que en los colegios oficiales de la zona norte obtuvieron una calificación baja en las pruebas del ICFES, mientras que los colegios no oficiales de la zona andina obtuvieron una calificación superior.

Découverte de 30 ans de correspondances perdues entre le peintre orientaliste Théodore Chassériau et ses amis Théophile Gautier, Alexis de Tocqueville, la comédienne mondaine Alice Ozy,…, dans le Paris artistique du 19ème siècle.

En 1871, toutes ces lettres devaient disparaître dans les flammes du Palais d'Orsay incendié, là où elles avaient été déposées pour être protégées de l'insurrection de Paris. De cette correspondance ne subsista qu'une centaine de lettres dont la trace disparaît il y a 80 ans, en 1934. Après des années de recherche par les Amis de Chassériau, ces lettres que l'on croyait perdues sont retrouvées dans les cartons du baron Arthur Chassériau laissés à sa famille. Elles avaient été oubliées au milieu des lettres non moins passionnantes du père de l'artiste, diplomate en Amérique du Sud qui fut un proche de Simón Bolivar.

La correspondance de Théodore Chassériau (1819-1856) connut une destinée comparable à celle du peintre, romanesque et chaotique. Le recueil offre un voyage dans le Paris artistique du milieu du 19ème siècle. Qualifié de Napoléon de la peinture par son maître Ingres, Théodore Chassériau avait pour amis Théophile Gautier, la comédienne Alice Ozy (dont Victor Hugo lui jalousait les faveurs), ou encore Alexis de Tocqueville.

Les Amis de Théodore Chassériau reproduisent aujourd'hui sa correspondance dans Chassériau – Correspondance oubliée, ainsi que les photos de ses fresques, détruites lors de l'incendie de la Cour des comptes pendant la Commune de Paris en 1871.

Discovery of 30 years of lost correspondence between the orientalist painter Théodore Chassériau and his friends Théophile Gautier, Alexis de Tocqueville, the socialite actress Alice Ozy,..., in the artistic Paris of the 19th century.

In 1871, all these letters were to disappear in the flames of the burnt-out Palais d'Orsay, where they had been deposited to be protected from the Paris uprising. Of this correspondence, only a hundred or so letters remained, a trace of which disappeared 80 years ago, in 1934. After years of research by the Friends of Chassériau, these letters that were thought to be lost were found in the boxes of Baron Arthur Chassériau left to his family. They had been forgotten in the midst of no less fascinating letters from the artist's father, a diplomat in South America who was close to Simón Bolivar.

The correspondence of Theodore Chassériau (1819-1856) had a destiny comparable to that of the painter, romantic and chaotic. The collection offers a journey through the artistic Paris of the mid-19th century. Described as the Napoleon of painting by his master Ingres, Théodore Chassériau's friends were Théophile Gautier, the actress Alice Ozy (whom Victor Hugo envied), and Alexis de Tocqueville.

Les Amis de Théodore Chassériau reproduce today his correspondence in Chassériau - Correspondance oubliée (Chassériau - Forgotten Correspondence), as well as photos of his frescoes, which were destroyed in the fire at the Cour des Comptes during the Paris Commune in 1871.

In the study of prehistoric artefacts, correspondence analysis (CA) is used to separate chrono‑
logical phases or spatial distribution. Corroborated with 14C data, this method can validate or invalidate the
classical periodization systems contributing to a better understanding of the evolution of certain communities.
This methodology was applied to several archaeological features from Dudeștii Vechi-Cociohatul Mic, a site that
belongs to the Early Bronze Age Mureș Culture. Unfortunately, the settlement from Dudeștii Vechi-Cociohatul
Mic does not yet benefit from any radiocarbon dating that would allow for a chronological check of the CA
results, but this type of approach can help one to determine its position in the internal chronology of the Mureș
Culture and see if there are traces of multiple phases in the settlement.
