Ceremonial funerals

The forms of the repesentation of the dead person which were employed in Poland in the Middle Age an the beginning of the 16th Century were not much different from the ceremonies which were held in the other countries in Europe.
The only ritual which was truly exceptional against the background of the Christian Europe was tke kiryśnik's fallin of the horse which was accompanied by his casting the dead man's sword, shield, helmet and a broken banner on the altar. This ritual fall, which was provided for in the ordo pompae funebris drawn of the occasion of the funeral of King Sigismund the Old (1548) seeems to orginate from the fact that the royal person was segregated from the State in accordance with the doctrine of the Crown od the Polish Kingdom and that the event itself was singular because it ended the diarchy.

En 1761, con motivo de las exequias fúnebres de María Amalia de Sajonia, se erigió en la Catedral de Barcelona un catafalco destinado a perpetuar el recuerdo de la soberana mediante un extenso programa iconográfico y literario. En esta contribución se publican nuevos datos que ayudan a la interpretación completa del ceremonial –gracias a la transcripción y estudio del material documental de la organización de las honras–, así como al análisis de los emblemas e inscripciones que se realizaron para este evento fúnebre.

In 1761, on the occasion of the funeral of Maria Amalia of Saxony, a catafalque was erected in the Cathedral of Barcelona to perpetuate the memory of the queen with an extensive iconographic and literary program. Through this contribution, new information are published that helps the complete interpretation of the ceremonial –thanks to the transcription and study of the documentary material of the organization of the honours to put in context the entire protocol of the funeral–, as well as the translation, analysis of the emblems and inscriptions that were made for this funeral event.

La solemne descripción que el capellán mayor D. Pedro Rodríguez de Monforte hizo de las honras fúnebres de Felipe IV celebradas en el Real Convento de la Encarnación de Madrid (1665) es un valioso documento histórico con el que poder evaluar la posición privilegiada de la música dentro del ceremonial de la administración de los sacramentos al monarca: confesión, viático y extremaunción.

Lo realmente significativo es que a pesar de que el texto de Rodríguez de Monforte sea un documento ampliamente citado por historiadores de la Edad Moderna, la praxis ceremonial del repertorio interpretado ha pasado inadvertido en los estudios musicológicos. Especialmente interesante es la introducción ceremonial de polifonía vocal con acompañamiento instrumental de los versos del Pange lingua y Tantum ergo dentro de la procesión de la Capilla Real junto al Santísimo Sacramento (antes de administrar el viático públicamente como el propio Felipe IV quiso). No hay duda de que la eucaristía adquirió una categoría de ritual ceremonial simbólico muy significativo de la Casa de Austria a lo largo de los siglos como emblema simbólico de la dinastía y la religión católica en la España de la Edad Moderna.

Gottlieb Mittelberger's Journey to Pennsylvania (1756) made Conrad Reiff its most celebrated miscreant.  Mittelberger became Henry Muhlenberg's organist in Trappe, where Conrad Reiff also had an organ in neighboring Oley, furthering Mittelberger's acquaintance with him. Mittelberger had a fondness for social events, which he considered himself a chronicler of.  The greatest celebration of that time was the funeral of Anna Reiff (1663-1753), Conrad's mother, a nonagenarian matriarch  celebrated for her intelligence and vibrant family. Anna and her husband Hans George had been early migrants to Skippack before 1717, the earliest provable mention.  The  general miscreant status Conrad obtained by being a Newborn  consumes Mittelberger's ire in Journey, for while  Mittelberger was a bon vivant he was also a single and religious man offended by all the extremes of Pennsylvania impiety in which the Newborn sect of Oley outdid them all.

In this paper I analyse the funerary ideology of the communities which occupied the Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula between c. 3300 and 850 cal BC (Copper and Bronze Age). The definition and critical discussion of the funerary patterns and their evolution over this long period is used as the basis for an analysis of the evolution of social inequality. With this aim in mind, three main groups of evidence are used, corresponding to (i) funerary spaces and architectures, (ii) grave goods deposited as part of the funerary ritual, and (iii) symbology associated with the architecture and portable artefacts. As a result, an interpretation of the dialectic evolution of elements of continuity and rupture within the funerary ideology, and its significance in terms of social relationships, is presented.

Este trabajo problematiza transición de las prácticas políticas de Antiguo Régimen a la república. Aborda el uso de rituales y ceremonias  (como la jura) con los cuales las se generaba legitimidad, autoridad y poder. Para el desarrollo de estas prácticas, fueron necesarios diversos  elementos simbólicos, así como espacios de poder, para que éstas ceremonias y rituales fueran realizados, sin perder de vista el elemento de la fiesta como otro elemento de cohesión e identidad, y finalmente  se aborda el uso del ritual fúnebre como ritual político, que también sufrió cambios en su desarrollo durante la transición.

This paper studies the role visual culture displayed during the performance of political ceremonies in late-colonial Caracas as symbols of power that helped renovate monarchic power and legitimize the social and political status of local institutions. Through the analysis of archival documents, this paper closely looks at public ceremonies in the city of Caracas during the years 1789 and 1790, when the city council –managed by the white creoles– executed the funerary acts for the late King Charles III and the proclamation of his successor, Charles IV. My research argues the city council used the visual culture displayed in these ceremonies as a strategy to safeguard their own legitimacy during the transition of power. By controlling the construction of a sumptuous burial mound at the Caracas Cathedral and designing a royal banner with the city’s emblem next to the monarchy’s coat of arms, the councilmen tried to create a symbolic connection with the “body politic” of the king to reassert their local authority. Moreover, the conflicts produced by the councilmen’s actions reveal how they used political ceremonies and visual culture to counteract the changes that, due to the Bourbon Reforms, affected their jurisdiction in the city of Caracas.

À la fin du Moyen Âge, dans la plupart des cours européennes, le cérémonial connut une expansion sans précédent. Les différents rituels touchant le prince et sa famille firent l’objet de célébrations de plus en plus élaborées, rapportées par une documentation à l’ampleur jusqu’alors inédite. Des textes narratifs d’un genre nouveau apparurent, témoignant d’une volonté de conserver la mémoire de ces événements et d’en diffuser le récit. Les grandes cérémonies publiques, qui théâtralisaient efficacement le pouvoir du souverain, furent mises au service d’une certaine communication politique qui prenait alors son essor dans les cours princières.

Cet ouvrage se propose d’appréhender ce phénomène par le biais d’une approche novatrice, qui consiste à prendre en compte l’ensemble des rites dynastiques d’une cour donnée – soit celle de Savoie. Quatre types de célébrations (les mariages, les joyeuses entrées, les baptêmes et les funérailles) sont ainsi tour à tour analysés, puis les résultats obtenus sont réunis et confrontés dans une perspective plus large qui envisage le cérémonial de cour comme un tout. Cette optique comparatiste, d’abord appliquée au champ de recherche spécifique de la Savoie, permet ensuite une plus ample réflexion sur le cérémonial princier du bas Moyen Âge, en particulier dans l’espace francophone (France, Bourgogne). Ce livre reconstitue par ailleurs une période peu étudiée de l’histoire du duché de Savoie et brosse un tableau détaillé de cette cour entre Moyen Âge et Renaissance.

Baroque urban funerals were festivities which made use of religious signs in a multiconfessional environment. This kind of manifestation of difference might have presented a pretext for violent outbreaks, however, most of the time these ceremonies ended without causing additional turmoil. The present thesis aims to explore the possible causes which allowed for these morbid festivities to remain peaceful and the effects that they might have had on the urban community.

En Occident, plus du tiers des cérémonies funèbres sont organisées sans l'intervention d'institutions religieuses, et les prévisions montrent que le phénomène est en expansion. Pourtant, les bricolages souvent mis sur pied dans l'urgence lors d'un décès laissent parfois un goût d'inachevé quand ce n'est pas un malaise lié au stress de l'improvisation. Ce manuel souhaite aider les proches d'un défunt à organiser des funérailles à la carte en présentant toute une série de mesures simples à mettre en place. Comment s'y prendre ? Où trouver textes, musiques et objets symboliques ? Dans une première partie, l'auteure aborde toutes les étapes d'une cérémonie personalisée en s'appuyant sur sa longue expérience de célébrante non institutionnelle. Puis elle aborde des situations délicates, cérémonies pour jeunes décédés, pour suicidés, en cas de mort violente ou quand le corps du défunt est introuvable. Dans une troisième partie, elle présente les rites et les cérémonies des principales religions existantes, avant de proposer un florilège de textes d'écrivains, de penseurs ou d'anonymes pour leur utilisation sur un faire-part, lors d'une célébration ou pour des condoléances. Théologienne et psychothérapeute d'origine néerlandaise, Jeltje Gordon-Lennox a travaillé au Comité international de la Croix-Rouge et comme pasteure à l'Eglise protestante de Genève avant de fonder à Genève Ashoka (www.ashoka.ch), association vouée à l'organisation de cérémonies sur mesure (naissances, mariages, services funèbres). Elle a déjà publié Mariages. Cérémonies sur mesure (Labor et Fides, 2008).

Los rituales y ceremonias no solamente formaban parte de los actos litúrgicos sino que servían como medio de propaganda y exaltación de la autoridad de la Iglesia. Una de las ceremonias más significativas y en las que quedaba reflejado claramente el poder de la Iglesia, como estamento superior al de la sociedad civil, es sin duda alguna las que tenían lugar en las elecciones y muertes de los Papas. Estos ritos oficiados por la Iglesia y para la Iglesia, a pesar de su simplicidad en algunos aspectos y recogimiento, se ejecutaban con fórmulas muy cuidadas y específicas que fueron configurándose a lo largo del siglo XVII. En el presente trabajo se analizan los ritos y ceremonias celebrados en la Catedral de Sevilla y su parafernalia en tales circunstancias durante dicha centuria.

Rituals and ceremonies not only formed part of liturgical acts but also servedas a means of propaganda and exaltation of the authority of the Church. Some of the most signifi cant ceremonies, which clearly refl ected the power of the Church as a body superior to the rest of civil society, are those which took place at the election and the death of Popes. These rites officiated by and for the Church, in spite of a simplicity  and austerity in certain aspects, were performed with very carefully chosen, specific formulations which continued to be developed throughout the 17th century. The present paper, analyses the rites and ceremonies celebrated during that century in the Cathedral of Seville together with the associated paraphernalia.
