Ceramics and medieval rural settlements (Archaeology)

This is the first conference volume focused on the history, archaeology, onomatology, coinage, craftsmanship, and settlements of the Gepidic Kingdom in the Tisza Region, Sirmium, and Transylvania. The heritage of the Gepidic period is presented through the most recent archaeological discoveries. Various aspects of the cultural contacts of the Gepids, as discussed in the book, shed light on their connections to European and Byzantine cultures, their relationship with the Langobards, as well as their beliefs and religion.

MÖ 3. yüzyıl ile MS 7. yüzyıl sonuna dek yaklaşık 1000 yıl iskân görmüş olan Dede Harabeleri, bu süreç içerisinde tarımsal üretime yönelik kırsal bir yerleşim olarak varlık göstererek Hellenistik Dönem’den Geç Antik Dönem’e kadar bu kimliğini kesintisiz korumuş olmalıdır.
Gerçekleştirilen kurtarma kazıları sonucunda, yerleşimde en az beş ayrı mimari tabakanın oluştuğu ve erken dönemden geç dönemlere doğru yerleşimin sınırlarının sürekli genişlediği tespit edilmiştir. Ağırlıklı olarak tarımsal üretime yönelmiş kırsal bir yerleşim şeklinde tanımlanmakla birlikte; Dede Harabeleri’nde yaşayanların standart bir yaşam tarzı içinde, standart tek bir iş koluyla meşgul olmadıklarını; tarımsal üretimin yanı sıra dokumacılık, hayvancılık ve maden işçiliği gibi birden fazla faaliyeti aynı anda gerçekleştirdiklerini söyleyebiliriz.
Dede Harabeleri’nde “işlevsellik” her zaman ön plandadır. Yaşam tamamen üretime yönelik faaliyetler çerçevesinde şekillenmiş ve bu durum yerleşim dokusunun tamamına nüfus etmiştir. Burada mimari, devşirme malzemenin yanı sıra doğadan elde edilen tüm malzemeler, hiçbir işleme tabi tutulmadan gelişigüzel kullanılarak şekillendirilmiştir. Gerek kullanılan seramikler; gerekse mimari sadece araç olarak görülmüş; amaç ise her zaman pratik üretim olmuştur. Türkiye’de kırsal yerleşim arkeolojisi açısından bugüne dek yapılan araştırmaların yetersiz olması nedeniyle barındırdığı kırsal nüfusun dinamik ve üretken yaşamını ortaya koyan Dede Harabeleri bu açıdan Geç Antik Çağ arkeolojisinde farklı bir yere sahip olacak eşsiz bir laboratuvar görünümündedir. ( TRACING LATE ANTIQUITY in THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN: ON THE BASIS OF A RURAL OCCUPATION, DEDE HARABELERİ Gulriz KOZBE, Batman University / Turkey (gkozbe@yahoo.com)  The occupation of Dede Harabeleri is located 13 km away from the Oguzeli district of Gaziantep in the southeast Turkey and 16 km north of Syria. It’s location in the Tilbashar Plain and west of the Sajur River on the crossroads had many advantages in terms of agriculture, livestock and trade. As a result of the rescue excavations held between 2016 and 2018 within the scope of Doğanpınar Dam Project built on Sajur, we can deduce that the settlement at Dede Harabeleri has been continued uninterruptedly as five layers between the 3rd century BC and the end of 7th century AD. Dede Harabeleri with its borders exceeding 20,000 m² holds many features on-site that are distinctive to a rural occupation identity such as its architecture built without carrying aesthetic concerns, industrial wine presses given the presence of tessera flooring, olive press stones as well as weight stones for the production of olive oil, the Pompeian mills, bloomery furnaces called "Rennofen" and simple but functional water channels. In addition to those, a monumental granary structure, horreum, which was built adjacent to a wine press on the south of the site, might also be indicator of the intensive production held at Dede Harabeleri during Late Roman period. At Dede Harabeleri, buildings were designed only as spaces where daily activities were carried out and used as simple facilities. Therefore, simplicity and uniformity prevail in domestic areas, storage buildings and workshops. Since functionality has spread to all details of life, ceramic assemblages which have been stratigraphically revealed in those areas are also simple and functional to completely eliminate daily needs and to store what the villagers produce. The Late Roman ceramics at Dede Harabeleri mostly consist of Coarse Wares and Brittle Ware for daily use, pithoi used in storage and amphorae with comb decoration, Late Roman amphorae, Red Slipped Late Roman bowls as well as Northern Syrian painted amphorae used in commercial transportation. As in architecture, it is possible to talk about simplicity and functionality seen in the production of Dede Harabeleri pottery. Finally but not the least, the 165 coins of Dede Harabeleri indicate an activity spanning the 3rd century BC to the end of 7th century AD uncovered in sequence at one site from countryside by the Euphrates is introduced for the first time.)

We are kindly inviting you to take part in the 6th International Scientific Conference on Mediaeval Archaeology entitled Using landscape in the Middle Ages in the light of interdisciplinary research organized by the Institute of Archaeology, which will be held in Zagreb, Croatia, 6–7 June 2019.

INTRODUÇÃO O objectivo deste artigo é dar a conhecer o projecto de investigação em arqueologia PramCV. Começare-mos por fazer um breve enquadramento no qual expo-mos o marco legal no qual se desenvolvem este tipo de projectos. Seguidamente apresentamos os limites ainda os principais trabalhos arqueológicos nesta área. Faremos então a apresentação das bases metodoló-gicas do projecto enfatizando os principais resultados obtidos até ao momento. Concluiremos com uma bre-ve referência aos autores peninsulares mais relevantes para esta temática. RESUMO Neste artigo, da autoria da equipa do projecto de investigação plurianual em arqueologia Povoamento rural alto-medieval no território de Castelo de Vide (PramCV), damos a conhecer o projecto, centrando-nos nas opções metodológicas adoptadas e nos principais trabalhos levados a cabo. PALAVRAS CHAVE PramCV, comunidades rurais, metodologia arqueológica, Alta Idade Média, Castelo de Vide (Portugal) ABSTRACT PramCV is a multiannual archaeological research project which aims to reconstruct the past way of lives of the peasant communities that occupied this territory between the 5 th and 12 th centuries. In this paper, signed by the research team of the project PramCV (Early medieval rural settlements in the territory of Castelo de Vide), we introduce the project by presenting our methodological framework and the key archaeological works carried out so far.
