Celts (Archaeology)

At the end of the Hallstatt and in the beginning of the La Tène period (Lt A), a gradual depopulation of Silesia can be observed. In the mentioned time, the region was inhabited by local Lusatian and Pomeranian culture communities, which were in contact with the La Tène cultural zone. This is indicated by the presence of Celtic craft products in the area. The available archaeological sources do not allow any conclusions concerning the coexistence of indigenous societies and Celtic settlers. The earliest burial finds, which might reflect the influx of Celtic settlers to Silesia can be dated to the phase Lt B1a. However, they were only recorded in Lower Silesia, while graves of Lt B1b were found in the whole region. Settlement finds from the early La Tène period are scarce and might suggest that the population inhabiting the area at that time was not numerous.

Résumé : Ce travail se propose d’étudier la principale collection d’armes du site de La Tène (épées et fourreaux, armes d’hast, armes de jet, boucliers) sous l’angle de la tracéologie. Les armes de la collection du Laténium, si elles montrent un état de conservation variable d’un objet à l’autre, sont dans l’ensemble remarquablement bien préservées, du fait de l’anaérobie du contexte de découverte. Les objets sont parfois recouverts d’une simple patine, proche de l’aspect original de l’artefact. L’approche, relativement originale, est basée sur un croisement disciplinaire entre l’analyse typo-chronologique, et des méthodes moins exploitées dans le cadre de l’étude de la guerre chez les Celtes : l’archéologie expérimentale, la comparaison avec d’autres cultures anciennes ou encore les sciences forensiques. Cette investigation tente de savoir s’il est possible, à l’aide de traces visibles sur les objets du site éponyme, mais également observables sur d’autres sites archéologiques laténiens, d’éclairer la question des traces de destructions sur les armes. Ces dernières sont-elles plutôt imputables à des actes rituels volontaires, comme dans le cas de Gournay-sur-Aronde, ou faut-il y voir les stigmates accidentels de combats ? Nous ne prétendons pas trancher définitivement l’épineuse question de la fonction du site de La Tène, mais apporter quelques pistes de réflexion sur l’interprétation de ce site (sanctuaire, trophée militaire...).

Abstract: Use-wear traces on La Tène weapons: the example of Laténium This study concerns the most important collection of weapons of the site of La Tène (swords and scabbards, spears and javelins, shields). It deals with the so-called traceology. Well-preserved in the most part, due to the anaerobic conditions, weapons are sometimes just covered with a simple patina, close to the original aspect of the artefact. The study is based on different methods, such as typo-chronological analysis, experimental archaeology, ethnoarchaeology or forensic sciences. Is it possible, with the investigation on destruction traces, to understand them? Are they rather attributable to voluntary ritual acts, as in the famous case of Gournay-sur-Aronde, or are they accidentally produced during fights? We would like to bring new elements to understand the mysterious function of the site of La Tène (sanctuary, military trophy...).

Résumé : La principale collection d’armes du site de La Tène (armes de poing, d’hast, de jet, boucliers) est étudiée sous l’angle de la tracéologie. Les armes du Laténium sont dans l’ensemble bien préservées du fait de l’anaérobie, parfois recouvertes d’une simple patine. L’approche de cette thèse de doctorat est basée sur un croisement disciplinaire entre l’analyse typo-chronologique, l’archéologie expérimentale, « l’ethno-archéologie » et les sciences forensiques. Est-ce possible, à compter de traces visibles sur les objets de La Tène, mais également sur d’autres sites laténiens, d’interpréter les traces de destructions sur les armes ? Ces dernières sont-elles plutôt imputables à des actes rituels volontaires ou faut-il y voir les résultats accidentels de combats ? Il ne s’agit pas ici de trancher définitivement l’épineuse question de la fonction du site de La Tène, mais d’apporter quelques pistes de réflexion sur l’interprétation de ce « gisement » énigmatique (sanctuaire, trophée militaire, …).

Summary : The weapons from the main collection from La Tène (impact and thrusting weapons, lances, projectiles/throwing spears, shields) have been analysed for use-wear. Due to the anaerobic conditions, the pieces at the Laténium are largely well preserved, with many bearing a simple patina. This PhD thesis combines chronotypology, experimental archaeology, «ethnoarchaeology» and forensics to answer the following question: Is it possible by examining the traces visible on the objects from La Tène and other sites to ascertain whether the weapons were put beyond use deliberately, as part of a ritual, or did it occur during combat? The objective is not to deduce the function of the enigmatic site (sanctuary, monument to a military victory,…) but to find ways of interpreting it.

Zusammenfassung : Die Waffen der Hauptsammlung aus La Tène (Hieb- und Stichwaffen, Lanzen/Speere, Wurfspeere, Schilde) werden spurenkundlich untersucht. Die Stücke im Laténium sind dank Luftabschluss grossteils gut erhalten, manche haben eine einfache Patina. Die Doktorarbeit verbindet Chronotypologie, Experimentalarchäologie, «Ethnoarchäologie» und Forensik, um folgende Fragen zu beantworten: Kann man anhand der Spuren auf Objekten aus La Tène, aber auch aus anderen Fundstellen, feststellen, ob die Waffen willentlich, rituell, oder aber als Folge des Kampfs unbrauchbar wurden? Es geht nicht darum, die Funktion der enigmatische Fundstelle herzuleiten (Heiligtum, militärisches Siegesmal,…), sondern Wege zur Deutung der «Station» aufzuzeigen.

Riassunto : La principale collezione di armi del sito di La Tène (armi da taglio, da punta, inastate, da lancio, scudi) è stata studiata dal punto di vista delle tracce d’uso. Nell’insieme le armi del Laténium sono ben conservate grazie alle condizioni anaerobiche, alcune sono ricoperte da una semplice patina. La tesi di dottorato segue un approccio multidisciplinare, prendendo in considerazione la tipocronologia, l’archeologia sperimentale, l’«etnoarcheologia» e le scienze forensi per elucidare le seguenti domande: È possibile, partendo dalle tracce visibili sugli oggetti di Latène e di altri siti latèniani, interpretare le tracce di distruzione che recano le armi? Quest’ultime sono da interpretare piuttosto come conseguenze di atti rituali o come tracce di combattimenti? Questa ricerca non pretende di trovare una risposta alla spinosa domanda sulla funzione del sito (santuario, trofeo militare,…), ma cerca di contribuire alla discussione presentando degli spunti di riflessione per l’interpretazione.
