Bishop

Hadrianoupolis, a “South Paphlognia” city, is now located in Eskipazar, Karabük, scattered over the area called “Viranşehir” 3kilometers west of the town center. The city is centered upon HacıAhmetler District, Budaklar village.
Surveys and excavations carried out up to date in the antic ruins of Hadrianoupolis since 2003 have shown that Hadrianoupolis was established in the ages of Early Hellenistic, Rome and Early Byzantium, and it had a centre and a chora that centralizes around there like in the other sites of the city in Paphlagonia. Considering the ruins today, it can be said that the ancient city reached a very important place especially in the Late Roman and Byzantium periods. The city, which was also a pilgrimage point thanks to Saint Stylianos, was famous for its boys and girls monasteries and became the centre of Archbishop in the era of Iustinianus. Some special structures dated to Late Roman-Early Byzantium were detected by archeogeophysic in 2014.

Die letzte Bauphase der Synagoge von Apamea ist durch ihre Bodenmosaiken vom Jahr 391 datiert. Bald nach 391 muss die Synagoge  (vermutlich auf Veranlassung des Bischofs) zerstört und durch einen Kirchenbau ersetzt worden sein, der im 6.Jh. beträchtlich vergrössert worden ist. Der Beitrag untersucht das mentalitätsgeschichtliche Umfeld dieser 'Umwandlung'.

Il lungo cammino della Chiesa alifana attraverso l’età moderna: la misteriosa morte di monsignor Caracciolo, il terremoto del 1688, il trasloco del seminario diocesano da Castello a Piedimonte, il ritrovamento delle spoglie di San Sisto I, in un racconto di ampio periodo che getta nuova luce sulla storia di un intero territorio. I vescovi di Alife (Domenico Caracciolo, Giuseppe de Lazara, Angelo Maria Porfiri, Gaetano Ivone, Pietro Abbondio Battiloro, Egidio Antonio Isabelli, Carlo Rosati, Innocenzo Sanseverino, Filippo Sanseverino, Francesco Ferdinando Sanseverino) disvelano gli aspetti complessi del proprio rapporto con i feudatari- in particolare con i Gaetani di Laurenzana, signori di Piedimonte- e la condotta di un clero regolare, ma anche secolare, non sempre irreprensibile.

Th e text concerns the problem of the implementation of the reforms of the Council of Trent in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, mainly in the case of the diocese of Vilna (Vilnius, Wilno). On the basis of sources originating from the cathedral chapter (now preserved in the Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences) and transcripts (preserved in the Czartoryski Library in Kraków) the question has been addressed of the resistance among the clergy – nominally associated with Vilna Cathedral – to the implementation of the Tridentine reforms. Th e existence of the phenomenon is attested indirectly by examples of breaches of discipline by clergymen, including problems of drunkenness and relations with women. Among the factors contributing to the resistance of the chapter to the Tridentine reforms we can count the plural tenure of benefi ces. Th e eff ects on parish life of the accumulation of benefi ces can be discovered from the records of visitations. Th e problem of non-residence can be considered one of the main factors which led to group disintegration, and also to the changing roles and social functions of clergymen.

This book presents the results obtained by the IdaVe Research Project on the landscape, urbanism and architecture of Idanha-a-Velha in the Roman, late antique and medieval periods from the latest fieldwork data and the reinterpretation of previous works. Since 2012, an interdisciplinary team has been studying the city and territory of the Roman ciuitas Igaeditanorum (Portugal), that was located in the Roman province of Lusitania in the western Iberian peninsula. The aim has been to understand the transformation of the Roman topography and landscape into a late antique bishopric through a wider archaeological approach. The new excavations have allowed analysis of zoology, carpology, palynology and mortars. e application of remote sensing methods in eldwork have enabled the authors to record more data about the architecture and topography of the ancient city.

Este libro presenta los resultados alcanzados por el Proyecto de Investigación IdaVe sobre el paisaje, el urbanismo y la arquitectura de Idanha-a-Velha en épocas romana, Antigüedad tardía y medieval-islámica a partir de los estudios realizados en el marco de este proyecto y de la reinterpretación de las excavaciones que nos han precedido. Desde 2012, un equipo interdisciplinar ha afrontado la investigación de la ciudad y el territorio de la ciuitas Igaeditanorum (Portugal), que pertenecía a la provincia romana de Lusitania, situada en la parte occidental de la Península Ibérica. El objetivo ha sido comprender la transformación de la topografía y el paisaje romanos en sede episcopal tardoantigua a través de un enfoque arqueológico amplio. Las nuevas excavaciones nos han permitido realizar análisis de zoología, carpología, palinología y morteros, cuyos resultados se recogen en este volumen. La aplicación de diversos métodos de teledetección en los trabajos de campo nos ha permitido registrar más datos sobre la arquitectura y la topografía de la ciudad antigua.

This historical-topographic work is based on archival sources, literature and Internet resources. It deals with the history of the village of Stará Ves nad Ondřejnicí. And from the general characteristics, through the historical development of the name and holders of the village, to additional information, which serves to fully understand the Stará Ves nad Ondřejnicí.

Bergoglio ha inteso dare una lettura sdrammatizzante della rinuncia di Ratzinger, ribadendo in varie occasioni come Benedetto XVI abbia creato un precedente che potrà eventualmente essere seguito anche da altri papi in futuro. Ma, al di là di queste attestazioni simpatetiche, è evidente come l’esperienza degli ultimi anni abbia lasciato emergere anche problemi, che andranno comunque pazientemente censiti e sviscerati in vista di una più complessiva ridefinizione dell'emeritato papale

Il progetto di ricerca dottorale oggetto della presente relazione seminariale si pone all'incrocio di due recenti filoni storiografici: da una parte la storia della mobilità sociale nel Basso Medioevo in relazione al ruolo assunto dalle competenze tecniche e professionali come canale di ascesa sociale; dall'altra gli studi sul notariato al servizio degli enti ecclesiastici, a sua volta attivo canale di mobilità sociale che non escludeva la continuazione dell’attività al servizio degli enti pubblici e dei privati.

Obiettivo della ricerca è la delineazione e l’analisi della carriera professionale e dell’ascesa sociale del notaio toscano ser Lando di Fortino da Cicogna († 1376), originario di un castello dell’Alto Valdarno e operante a Firenze e nel suo contado fra gli anni ’40 e gli anni ’70 del XIV secolo al servizio precipuo dei monasteri vallombrosani e della curia vescovile fiorentina. Sul solco dell’ascesa professionale e sociale del padre, i figli Benedetto (1350 ca.-1406) e Paolo Fortini (1370 ca.-1433) arriveranno a ricoprire l’ufficio di Cancelliere della Repubblica fiorentina al fianco di Coluccio Salutati e Leonardo Bruni.

La ricerca potrà far luce su tematiche quali le funzioni attribuite ai notai attivi per gli enti ecclesiastici e l’attività da essi svolta per le varie istituzioni con le quali erano in contatto; sui rapporti da essi intrattenuti con le famiglie e i ceti che ruotavano attorno alle istituzioni della Chiesa; sulle persone e sulle famiglie di questi notai, per alcuni dei quali la storiografia ha già delineato una mobilità e un livello sociale medio-alto.

En la anterior edición de esta revista, dábamos a conocer la heráldica que el Obispo Brizuela y Salamanca presentaba en la parroquial de Ibros. No obstante, dejábamos un capítulo interesante sobre su genealogía, que prometiamos ofrecer, esperando la documentación que sobre este prelado existía en el Archivo Histórico Nacional de Madrid, a través de su expediente de ingreso como Caballero de la Orden de Alcántara en 1668.

In July 2002, Canada hosted World Youth Day, an international event addressing youth organized by the Catholic Church. From a perspective of transnational history, this article seeks to capture the way in which the bishops of Canada appropriated an instrument conceived in Rome. From a perspective of political history, it studies the centre-periphery dynamics within the Catholic world, analyzing the relationship between Canadian bishops and the Roman Curia. The article also looks at how the Canadian episcopate at the federal and provincial levels managed World Youth Day 2002, and compares this to how French bishops (from France) had come about to agree on hosting World Youth Day in 1997.

And once again Bishop Calixtus I. of Rome (217?-222?) in the focus of my attention. This time, it tackles the issue whether he was a presbyter (priest) or a deacon prior to his election to bishop. The problem is particularly intriguing, because Calixtus was also an authentic confessor and thus his installation into the office of a presbyter could be understood for instance as a "honoris causa" promotion.

The Orthodox Church is characterized as ‘Traditional’ where traditionalism is perceived in different ways: a)
the Church is changeless and faithful to the past and thus there is no need or place for change and reform; b) the definitions of faith along with their sources are absolute and unchanging; and c) the Church considers the present times, deals with their challenges and requirements, and lives its faith in a forward movement and progressive manner towards the future rather than restoring the past or transmitting its fossils and traditions.

The Orthodox Church has a complex organizational structure where the clergy and laity live their ecclesiastical life together under the supervision of a Synod and the overseeing of a diocesan bishop. In fact, the bishop is endowed during his election and consecration “with the threefold power of (1) ruling, (2) teaching, and (3) celebrating the sacraments” (Ware 1993). It is to note that the elected-bishop pledges, during his consecration, to keep the unity,
peace, teachings, dogmas and traditions of the Church.

The Orthodox Church needs to conduct change and reform in various ecclesiastical areas in order to face various and numerous challenges and problems pertaining to leadership and administration, human rights, ethics, poverty, corruption, modernization, intellectualism, fanaticism etc. Needless to say that unfreezing the Church status quo, abolishing outdated religious and socio-cultural traditions, transforming the Church, and getting the support of the right stakeholders, are difficult tasks to achieve. Furthermore, failure will be inevitable if any of the following
elements is missed; i.e., vision, consensus, skills, incentive, resources, and action plan. Accordingly, the intent of this short paper is twofold: (1) to reflect on the ecclesiastical and social changes’ goals and roadmaps, and (2) to analyze the role of the bishop-leader and the various stakeholders in the change process.
