De Romeinse weg tussen Tongeren en Tienen maakt deel uit van de heerbaan die liep van Boulogne-sur-Mer via Cassel, Velzeke, Tienen, Tongeren en Maastricht in de richting van Keulen. Het gaat om een zeer mooi bewaard tracé. De publicatie tracht een meer gedetailleerd inzicht te geven in dit stuk Romeinse weg dat zeker bij een wat groter publiek te weinig bekend is.

Title: The Digital afterlife of the Catacombs of Abbatija tad-Dejr at Rabat (Malta)
Abstract: The research aims at the reappraisal through the application of 3-D Scanning, Remote Sensing and 3-D Visualization of the multifaceted Maltese catacomb complex of Abbatija tad-Dejr, whose occupation phases range from Late Roman to Late Medieval period. The site is currently inaccessible and in derelict state and has not been subject to any excavation or new interpretative study since the 30s. The production of a 3D model combined with a spatial analysis will produce an updated technical documentation necessary to characterize it. An interactive virtual replica of the complex and all it iconographic features will be made accessible on a web platform for public enjoyment.

Title: Yeronisos–Meletis Necropolis Project, Peyia, Paphos District, Cyprus
Abstract: The dozen spectacular rock-cut chamber tombs of the small cemetery of Meletis at Agios Georgios tis Pegeias near Paphos in Cyprus had been thought to be fully looted long ago. But the discovery in 2018 of a thirteenth tomb will forever change our understanding of burial practices within a wealthy sector of the local community during late Hellenistic through Roman times. This project calls for excavation, documentation, preservation, and publication of a family tomb established in the 1st century B.C.E. under Ptolemaic Egyptian influence and continuing in use until the 5–6th century C.E. Investigation of this unique sepulcher provides a rare opportunity for us to understand better the social and cultural history of rock-cut tombs in Cyprus and across the Mediterranean world.

All’interno del panorama architettonico ispanico di epoca alto-imperiale, Tarraco, capitale della provincia Hispania Citerior, rappresenta senza dubbio uno dei centri principali in cui l’adozione per così dire spontanea di forme architettonico-costruttive proprie della Romanità raggiunge la sua più alta espressione. Nonostante nell’architettura di epoca imperiale non sia possibile riconoscere o percepire quel sostrato indigeno che invece almeno fino ad epoca repubblicana persisteva nella dualità topografico-insediativa della città iberico-romana, l’acquisizione di modelli direttamente provenienti da Roma trova a Tarraco certamente espressione immediata, ma sempre fortemente influenzata dal contesto in cui i riferimenti all’Urbs si inseriscono. Sullo sfondo dell’impulso urbanistico-edilizio della provincia Hispania Citerior di epoca alto-imperiale, in questo contributo si porrà dunque particolare attenzione all’uso di materiali e agli aspetti costruttivi del monumento cardine che ha plasmato l’architettura ufficiale della capitale della più estesa provincia ispanica, il cosiddetto “Foro Provinciale”.

Romans were fascinated by Egypt, which, consequently, exercised an important cultural influence over Rome. The dialogue between both cultures became even more acute after Octavian conquered Egypt in 30 BC. The popularity of Egyptian fashions can be detected in artistic developments, which also affected small decorative objects. For example, the iconography of different ceramic productions, which reproduced sculptural, pictorial and mosaic models, should be noted. Our lamp, for instance, presents a Nilotic scene depicted around the infundibulum. Despite its precarious state of preservation, two attributes of the Nile can be recognised (Versluys, 2002): the crocodile and the hippopotamus, which were veritable symbols of the ancient Ptolemaic Kingdom. In fact, these were the symbols used on the coins issued by Octavian after 29 BC to celebrate the conquest of Egypt.

Perhaps more than any other ceramic container, lamps have the greatest potential to bear very rich iconographic depictions. The central surface and the band around the perimeter were useful panels on which to illustrate either individual or serialised themes. Sometimes, the very function of the object – to enlighten – complemented the symbolism of the decoration: for instance, on our example from Cartagena the protecting and ‘illuminating’ powers of Serapis and Isis are hinted at (Podvin, 2011). The divine couple is represented in the form of overlapping portraits (in profile).  Images of their son Harpocrates (thePtolemaic Horus) abound –for example, in this
volute lamp. Plutarch’s ‘weak-legged’ child (De Is. et Os. 19) is often depicted with a finger on or near his mouth, and this was an attribute used in Egypt to identify infants and which in Rome was associated with the silence that must accompany any religious ritual.
