Ancient Roman Numismatics

In 1985 in the site of “Ubitiyat turchin” in the area of Sushina village, Shumen region were found two coin hoards. A big part of them was picked up in the Shumen museum. Subject of our current paper is a hoard of antoniniani. The earliest coin in the deposit belongs to emperor Gordianus III (Catalogue № 1), 24 are from the period 253 – 260: Valerianus I – 14 (Catalogue № 2 – 15), Gallienus – 8 (Catalogue № 16 – 23) and Salonina – 2 (Catalogue № 121 – 122). 117 from the rest belong to Gallienus (Catalogue № 24 – 120) and his wife Salonina (Catalogue № 123 – 142), 48 are from the period of Claudius Gothicus (Catalogue № 143 – 190), and a single issue of emperor Arcadius (Catalogue № 191). The last one is added in modern times and can’t be reached with the entire part of the hoard. Coins strucked in the mint of Rome are prevailed – around 64 %, followed by the mint of Anthioche – 18 %, Siscia – 15 % and Mediolanum – 2.1 %. While the deposits with coins dated back to the middle of the 3rd century indicated the devastating areas on the time of invasions, the hoards with Gallienus last coins reflected attendance of troops in the region. Their concentration in particular area is a result of some kind of a battle lost by the Romans. Thus the hoards from this period might be treated as a “circulate” hoards. Their connection with the army is undoubted although it is not quite sure if they belonged to the soldiers or to other residents of the Danube provinces connected to the army.

2019 - Curiae Veteres. Nuovi dati sulla frequentazione del santuario in età tardo-repubblicana.

The conclusion of the researches carried out on the north‐eastern slopes of the Palatine from the Sapienza - Università di Roma, within some of the sectors investigated since 2001 (Areas II‐III), has allowed to acquire relevant information on the Curiae Veteres, the sanctuary that according to the literary tradition occupies the corner of the hill since the middle of the 8th c. BCE. Eight centuries later, around the middle of the 1st c. BCE, an Early Republican well inside the Curiae, is filled. The preliminary analysis of the stratigraphy and of the artifacts indicate that its obliteration involved some ritual activities, which have significant compari‐ sons with other urban contexts (area of the Forum of Caesar, Largo Magnanapoli) similar for function and chronology. Among the artifacts used during this closing ceremony a conspicuous number of cream ware jugs seems to play a prominent role. These objects keep some painted inscriptions likely to refer to their owners. The continuation of the study of stratigraphies and deposits will have significant repercussions on our knowledge of the sanctuary in the 1st c. BCE and, from a more general point of view, on the history of archeology of cult and on the dynamics of production and exchange known for the Late‐Republican city.

14. Tag der Antiken Numismatik (Programme)

Same procedure as every year: In November the "TAG DER ANTIKEN NUMISMATIK" will be held in Muenster. Ongoing numismatic research and new projects will be discussed. This conference offers a platform particularly for young scholars presenting their numismatic research. Anther intention is the exchange between academic and non-academic numismatic community. Additional to the papers there will be a poster session.
