This is the first corpus of the known lead seals, to date,  covering the periods of the Umayyad conquest and its governors in al-Andalus, (ca 711 to 756).
Combines those found in  the Iberian Peninsula and those of the Narbone area.
A total of 141 lead elements  with arabic text covering many diverse typologies: seals of  known governors, those of peace treaties صلح، مصالحة  with various cities  شذونة، اشبيلية، اكشونية،لبيرة، باجة، قرطبة and regions ارض جيان , poll tax اهل seals, "djizya," with city names, seals  of alotment  قسم، مقسوم، قد قسم ,  "fay" seals of the 1/5  في الله, seals of booty مغنوم redistribution, one "djund" area seal حمص(Seville), seals of licitude جزة، جواز،الوفا لله , one seal of possible feminine خرائد booty alotmen? ect...

The study of religious spaces in al-Andalus cities, centered on mosques, has always been a subject of notable interest in historiography. Even though this topic has been traditionally approached from a philological focus, in the last decades the new archaeological information recovered has allowed innovative perspectives to be addressed. The analysis of this evidence has brought a better knowledge and understanding of mosques from a material and urban point of view: typologies, insertion in the urban tissue or topographical meanings are just a few of the fields that have been explored. All this has leaded to understand the relation in between the foundation of mosques and the emergence of new well equipped neighbourhoods within certain cities of al-Andalus, as well as to interpret these spaces not only from a religious perspective, but also in relation to political and social facts and needs.
Nevertheless, the development of these studies has remained relatively isolated from the previous historical stage (that is to say, Late Antiquity). Christian landscapes and buildings that Muslims encountered upon the arrival to new lands had a strong influence in the subsequent design and planning of Islamic religious places. This influence has been analyzed in locations like Bilad al-Sham (Syrian region), whereas for al-Andalus it remains barely unexplored. In this geographical area, and apart from few and very specific examples -such as the Great Mosque of Córdoba-, mosques and other sacred Islamic spaces have been considered from the eighth century onwards, disregarding possible previous influences. In addition, when recreating al-Andalus religious landscape, contemporary churches and synagogues are often overlooked.
Given all this, the aim of this presentation is, as far as archaeological evidence may allow it, to make a first approach to the processes through which Muslims started to transform and Islamize the Late Antique religious urban landscape. One particular objective is to examine if the dynamics documented in Bilad al-Sham are brought and implemented in al-Andalus, or if this area shows their owns. Special attention will be given to the possible maintenance or appropriation of sources of Christian sacredness by the Islam, and to the impact that the transformation of religious landscape may have had in social terms.

El presente volumen es el resultado de una reunión científica que organizó la Universidad de Granada en sus instalaciones del Carmen de “La Victoria” y en el Centro Cultural Medina Elvira de Atarfe (Granada), en el marco de la Acción Integrada España-Italia sobre la “Ciudad y el mundo rural” en el período medieval. En esta, además de la UGR, participaron las Universidades Alma Mater de Bolonia, la de Jaén y la de Murcia. 

Se recoge un total de once aportaciones, variadas en cuanto a su contenido —seis sobre el dominio italiano y cinco sobre el ámbito hispano— pero todas ellas con argumentos comunes. Se colige que el papel de la ciudad es importante, pero no lo es menos el del campo, y, sobre todo, el de las interrelaciones, influencias y el establecimiento de jerarquizaciones de tipo poblacional y económico entre ambos elementos. De modo que, se abordan tanto la creación de un urbanismo en un mundo principalmente rural, como la incidencia del mismo en espacios concretos.

Como resultado, nos encontramos ante un libro de indudable importancia, no solo por los casos que se presentan, sino sobre todo por las discusiones teóricas y metodológicas que se incluyen, que obligan a reflexionar acerca de los sistemas de poblamiento en la constante dialéctica campo/ciudad y en sus diversas fases.

El presente volumen abarca un amplio período de la historia de la península ibérica que se extiende desde la protohistoria hasta las postrimerías de la Edad Media. Se trata de un período de más de dos mil años, durante los cuales se produjeron algunos de los acontecimientos que han resultado más determinantes para la Península.

La Península ha sido el escenario de una gran variedad cultural a lo largo de todos estos siglos. Solo desde la perspectiva de esta gran pluralidad y diversidad es posible entender el desarrollo de una etapa tan amplia de la historia de este territorio, cuyo resultado final, sin embargo, se materializó en buena medida en la simplificación (no desaparición) de esa diversidad inicial.

La victoria militar de los cristianos frente a los musulmanes, culminada con la conquista de Granada por los Reyes Católicos en 1492, simboliza el triunfo del catolicismo y de la tradición latina en los planos político, cultural e ideológico, y ambos prevalecerán en todo el territorio peninsular.
