This essay explores the extent of the intellectual authorship over Castro’s Cuban revolution by José Martí. It assesses his impact on the ‘Revolution’ both before and after 1959, finding that associations with Martí where used to legitimise Castro in both periods, serving as a rallying-point. Nevertheless, ‘revolutionary’ politics and policies were driven by practical realities and not necessarily adapted to suit Martíismo.
