2016, Cybern. Hum. Knowing
The early 1980s were a time for rebuilding the American Society for Cybernetics (ASC) after a few difficult years in the 1970s. Basic administrative functions were needed, and a series of annual, national conferences was resumed. Intellectual direction was provided by Heinz von Foerster and his idea of second-order cybernetics. Whereas other societies focused on technical aspects of cybernetics, ASC emphasized theory and philosophy in the biological and social sciences. New information technology was used, and there was close cooperation with scientists in Europe. An ongoing debate has been whether ASC should be a conventional academic society with a variety of special interest groups or a small, revolutionary group that self-consciously seeks to create an alternative to the prevailing view. This article describes my decisions and actions on behalf of ASC during my three years as president and in the years thereafter.
Cybernetics and Human Knowing
At the 2014 conference of the American Society for Cybernetics (ASC), past presidents were invited to give a twenty minute presentation offering their perspectives on the history of cybernetics and ASC in the context of their terms of office. The author of this paper served a three-year term as ASC President from 1986 to 1988. The paper takes the perspective that a history of cybernetics should take into account the cybernetics of the concept of history. As such, it offers some premises on the concepts of history and time, claiming that these premises can be derived from concepts in cybernetics. The premise that history is continually being transformed serves as the point of departure for reflections on cybernetics in the 1980s and especially the time period 1986-1988. The author presents his recollections of the thought process that guided his role as ASC President in advancing cybernetic thinking and of the topics of discussion at that time that he wishes to conserve for continuing conversation. The paper concludes with a proposal to change the name of the ASC to reflect its international membership.
Key events in the history of cybernetics and the American Society for Cybernetics are discussed, among them the origin of cybernetics in the Macy Foundation conferences in the late 1940s and early 1950s; different interpretations of cybernetics by several professional societies; reasons why the U.S. government did or did not support cybernetics in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s; early experiments in cyberspace in the 1970s; conversations with Soviet scientists in the 1980s; the development of “second order” cybernetics; and increased interest in cybernetics in Europe and the United States in the 2000s, due at least in part to improved understanding of the assumptions underlying the cybernetics movement. The history of cybernetics in the United States is viewed from the perspective of the American Society for Cybernetics (ASC) and several questions are addressed as to its future.

2020, History of the Human Sciences
Cybernetics saturates the humanities. Norbert Wiener’s movement gave vocabulary and hardware to developments all across the early digital era, and still does so today to those who seek to interpret it. Even while the Macy Conferences were still taking place in the early 1950s, talk of feedback and information and pattern had spread to popular culture – and to Europe. The new science created a shared language and culture for surpassing political and intellectual ideas that could be relegated to a pre-computing tradition, and it refracted or channelled currents developing in fields from manufacturing to human physiology. It produced conceptions of the political world, as well as new forms of historical consciousness. It offered frameworks for structuralist thought, but also for policies regarding manufacturing and technology, international relations, and governmental decision-making. But the rising sense of the breadth, importance, and even shock of cybernetics long remained understud...

British Society for Literature and Science
Interest in cybernetics declined in North America from the mid 1970s to 2010, as measured by the number of journal articles by North American authors, but increased in Europe and Asia. Since 2010 the number of books on cybernetics in English has increased significantly. Whereas the social science disciplines create descriptions based on either ideas, groups, events or variables, cybernetics provides a multi-disciplinary theory of social change that uses all four types of descriptions. Cyberneticians use models with three structures – regulation, selforganization and reflexivity. These models can be used to describe any systemic problem. Furthermore, cybernetics adds a third approach to philosophy of science. In addition to a normative or a sociological approach to knowledge, cybernetics adds a biological approach. One implication of the biological approach is additional emphasis on ethics. Keywords: regulation, self-organization, reflexivity, ethics Background
2004, L. Floridi (ed.), The Blackwell Guide to Philosophy of Computing and Information
The term cybernetics was first used in 1947 by Norbert Wiener with reference to the centrifugal governor that James Watt had fitted to his steam engine, and above all to Clerk Maxwell, who had subjected governors to a general mathematical treatment in 1868. Wiener used the word “governor” in the sense of the Latin corruption of the Greek term kubernetes, or “steersman.” Wiener defined cybernetics as the study of “control and communication in the animal and the machine” (Wiener 1948). This definition captures the original ambition of cybernetics to appear as a unified theory of the behavior of living organisms and machines, viewed as systems governed by the same physical laws. The initial phase of cybernetics involved disciplines more or less directly related to the study of such systems, like communication and control engineering, biology, psychology, logic, and neurophysiology. Very soon, a number of attempts were made to place the concept of control at the focus of analysis also in other fields, such as economics, sociology, and anthropology. The original ambition of “classical” cybernetics thus seemed to involve also several human sciences, as it developed in a highly interdisciplinary approach, aimed at seeking common concepts and methods in rather different disciplines. In classical cybernetics, this ambition did not produce the desired results and new approaches had to be attempted in order to achieve them, at least partially. In this chapter, we shall focus our attention in the first place on the specific topics and key concepts of the original program in cybernetics and their significance for some classical philosophic problems (those related to ethics are dealt with in Chapter 5, COMPUTER ETHICS, and Chapter 6, COMPUTER-MEDIATED COMMUNICATION AND HUMAN–COMPUTER INTERACTION). We shall then examine the various limitations of cybernetics. This will enable us to assess different, more recent, research programs that are either ideally related to cybernetics or that claim, more strongly, to represent an actual reappraisal of it on a completely new basis.

House size provides a comparative measure of household wealth that enables archaeologists to track global trends in inequality across a range of sedentary societies. Such approaches hold particular promise for Maya archaeology given its long history of settlement pattern research and recent applications of LiDAR to map large areas surrounding ancient Maya cities. Estimating dwelling size, however, is not a trivial exercise. This article addresses potential confounds associated with geometric-based estimates (volume and area) and compares traditional house size-based measures of wealth with other estimates of house size and quality of life indicators. Settlement pattern data from the Upper Usumacinta Confluence Zone, recently collected by the Proyecto Arqueológico Altar de Sacrificios, combined with previously published excavation data provide a robust dataset to evaluate alternative measures of wealth beyond house size.

2021, Isotopic Abundance Ratio Analysis of the Consciousness Energy Healing Treated Berberine Chloride Using LC-MS and GC-MS Spectrometry
"Berberine is a benzylisoquinoline alkaloid found in many medicinal plants such as Berberis vulgaris, Mahonia aquifolium, etc. Although it has enormous therapeutic potential, the bioavailability is very poor (<1%) due to its low solubility and poor intestinal absorption. This study was performed to investigate the impact of the Trivedi Effect® on the structural properties and the isotopic abundance ratio of berberine chloride using LC-MS and GC-MS spectroscopy. Berberine chloride sample was divided into two parts, one part of berberine chloride was considered as a control sample (received no Biofield Energy Treatment), while the second part was treated with the Trivedi Effect®-Consciousness Energy Healing Treatment remotely by a famous Biofield Energy Healer, Alice Branton, called a treated sample. The LC-MS spectra of both the samples at retention time (Rt) ~2.1 minutes exhibited the mass of the molecular ion peak at m/z 336.3 [M]+ (calculated for C20H18NO4 +, 336.12). The LC-MS based isotopic abundance ratio of PM+1/PM in the treated berberine was significantly increased by 24.41% compared with the control sample. Thus, 13C, 2H, 15N, and 17O contributions from (C20H18NO4)+ to m/z 337 in the treated sample was significantly increased compared with the control sample. Similarly, the GC-MS based isotopic abundance ratio of PM+1/PM in the treated berberine was significantly increased by 12.97% compared with the control sample. Hence, 13C, 2H, 15N, and 17O contributions from (C20H16NO4)3+ to m/z 335 in the treated sample were significantly increased compared with the control sample. But, the isotopic abundance ratio of PM+2/PM in the treated berberine chloride was significantly decreased by 38.59% compared with the control sample. Hence, 18O contribution from (C20H16NO4)3+ to m/z 336 in the treated sample was significantly decreased compared with the control sample. The isotopic abundance ratios of PM+1/PM and PM+2/PM in the treated berberine chloride were significantly altered compared to the control sample. The altered isotopic abundance ratios (2H/1H or 13C/12C or 15N/14N or 17O/16O or 18O/16O) would influence the intra-atomic bond strength, its physical stability, and alter the rate of reactions in the body. The changes in isotopic abundance might be due to changes in nuclei, possibly through the interference of neutrino particles via the Trivedi Effect®-Consciousness Energy Healing Treatment. The new form of berberine chloride would be more efficacious novel pharmaceutical formulations that might offer better solubility, bioavailability and therapeutic response against diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, bacterial, fungal and other microbial infections, cancer, arrhythmia, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, inflammation in the body, etc."

2023, ISEX project Erasmus+ KA2 2020-2023
