The Youth Olympic Games: the best of the Olympics or a poor copy?2013 •
The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) are the newest addition to the Olympic Movement and its first edition was staged in Singapore in 2010. One of the objectives of creating the YOG is to inspire young people around the world to participate in sports and to adopt and live by the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. This empirical study (n= 969) attempts to measure the success of the inaugural Games in influencing young Singaporeans (aged 10 to 19 during the Games) through its intangible legacies, and to contribute to the future development and direction of the YOG. The study proposes a legacy framework for the Singapore 2010 based on 3 research questions and provides a systematic examination of the intangible legacies. The investigation concludes that Singapore 2010 was a successful sporting event: the high (95%) level of satisfaction on hosting YOG in Singapore; the high (92%) level of awareness of Singapore 2010 followed by the high (88.8%) level of followers of Singapore 2010. Furthermore, 9 alternative hypotheses were rejected reflecting a uniform permeation of Singapore 2010 which in turns meets the YOG objective of reaching youth communities to promote the Olympic values. In addition, 49% of respondents have since participated in new sports. The study further proposes that Singapore Youth Olympic Festival (SYOF), an event legacy of Singapore 2010, to continue to promote Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect, and inspire young Singaporeans to take up sports. Additionally, it is only through continuous exposure at legacies’ events that the intended behaviours, attitudes and values can be reinforced. Thus, it is recommended that the process of engaging, enticing and empowering youths to take on leadership roles be iterated through Singapore Youth Olympic Festivals or similar sports events

The Youth Olympic Games: Analyzing Institutional Performance in an Olympic Context2014 •
The 1 st Youth Olympic Summer Games (YOG) took place in Singapore from August 14-26, 2010 with participation of 3,530 elite young athletes ranging in age from 14 to 18 years old. These Games were followed by the first Youth Olympic Winter Games hosted by Innsbruck, Austria in 2012. Does the introduction of these Games represent good sport policy, good sport practice or merely a crass attempt to further commercialize and promote the Olympic brand image to youth? Although academics and sport officials in their critical analyses of the YOG are cautious about this newly introduced event, the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) background ideational abilities – i.e. the process by which the YOG has become communicated and accepted - has skipped their attention. This paper utilizes discursive institutionalism as a theoretical framework to analyze available primary and secondary sources, documents, reports, personal interviews, and official communications on the first Youth Olympics. Olympic Education2013 •
The educational nature of sport was in the foundation of the Olympic Movement since its inception. Understood as a pedagogical tool, sport was seen by Pierre de Coubertin as a possibility of celebration among people, a way to promote peace and development. In this sense, the Olympic Games are considered the public face of this pedagogical effort, and the understanding of Olympic education promotes values and knowledge on the sports universe and all its symbolic acquis. This argument triggers Olympic education programs by countries and cities involved in sport competitions based on the Olympic model. The aim of this study was to present the Olympic Education program developed by the São Paulo Secretary of Education for teachers working in the public school network of São Paulo. This course conducted over the years 2012 and 2013 relied on the participation of 250 teachers, mostly involved with Student Olympics, competition involving public schools of São Paulo.
