Abstract
DESCRIPTION Whilst many organisations give lip service to the benefits of diversity, a number of marginalised and vulnerable groups still experience discrimination. The disabled and particularly those considered ‘mentally disabled’ are amongst the most disadvantaged groups despite attempts to use policies to change social attitudes and behaviours. This review offers a radical approach to perceptions of mental disability, arguing that the myth of the “mad genius” actually has an element of truth attached to it. Scientific studies prove that intelligence and mental disorders are linked. People who have different brains can often add substantial value to society if they are included and accepted. Whilst the future of formal work remains in a state of flux, the growing trend of crowdworking offers both the abled and disabled an opportunity to engage in income generating activities.
