_ Husayn b. 'Alı b. Abı _ T alib outside K ufa in 122 ⁄ 740. According to the heresiographical literature, the rebellion brought together two currents of K ufan Shı 'ism (the Batrı s and the J ar udı s) to create a new movement. While both of these constituent groups restricted legitimate religious and political authority to Sayyids, they subscribed to radically different interpretations of early Muslim history. Specifically, they disagreed regarding the status of those Companions who had rejected 'Alı 's right to the succession.

This chapter provides an annotated overview of Yemeni Zaydi tafsir literature, most of which remains in manuscript. It proposes three categories of Zaydi tafsir: 1) Imam-centered Commentaries; 2) Adaptations of Sunni Qur'an Commentaries; and 3) Commentaries on legal passages of the Qur'an. It concludes with a brief discussion of three modern Zaydi Qur'an commentaries.

The current work is a PhD thesis on Zayd b. ʿAlī (d. 122/740), leader of the Zaydiyya sect and the attributed author of al-Majmūʿ alfiqhī. It is composed of an introduction, three chapters, a conclusion, and a rich bibliography.

Ibn Abī’l-Qāsim’s Tajrīd al-Kashshāf sheds valuable light on both the Zaydī tradition of Qur’an commentary and the nature of Zaydī Islam. Zaydīs typically are classified as Shiis on account of their belief that ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib was the rightful political successor to Muḥammad. While this belief is sacrosanct among Zaydīs, it should not obscure the fact that the Zaydī traditions of law, theology, and, as this article shows, Qur’an commentary, are in close conversation with the Sunni tradition. The case of Ibn Abī’l-Qāsim shows that the difference between a Muʿtazilī Sunni Qur’an commentary and a popular Zaydī Qur’an commentary can be negligible and that Zaydī exegetes drew upon a range of Sunni commentaries in order to compose their own books.

The present paper is dedicated to semantic and functional study of the technical terms widely employed by Abū Ṭālib Yaḥyā b. al-Ḥusayn al-Hārūnī al-Daylamī al-Nāṭiq bi-l-ḥaqq (340/951-424/1033), the Zaydī imām of Daylam, a prominent representative of the Qāsimiyya school of law of the Caspian Zaydiyya, in his famous Zaydī theological summa (talḫīṣ) "al-Taḥrīr fī l-kašf 'an nuṣūṣ al-a'imma al-naḥārīr" to verbalize the concept of the imāmate which plays essential role in a conceptual system of the Zaydī school of law. The terminology of the Zaydī imāmate extracted from "al-Taḥrīr" was defined in the framework of semantic fields outlined to specify the qualification of the Zaydī imām, his role and powers as a political and military commander of the umma. It was shown that the Zaydī imāmate terminology is the integral part of Classical Arabic lexicon. The functional peculiarities of the technical terms as attested in "al-Taḥrīr" were delineated to lexically reflect the imāmate concept specific for the Zaydī school of jurisprudence.

The Zaydīs in Yemen are the only current within Islam that fostered the continuous transmission and study of Muʿtazilī kalām up to the present time. This article aims to examine the presence and quality of Muʿtazilī kalām in a major Zaydī composition of the 20th century, namely ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-ʿAǧrī’s (1320-1407/1902-1987) Miftāḥ al-saʿāda, which was completed in May 1952. The Miftāḥ and other works of Zaydī scholars written during the first half of the 20th century provide us with valuable insights into Zaydī-Hādawī scholarship in Northern Yemen in the wake of the so-called "Sunnisation of Zaydism" and prior to the Republican revolution of 1962; they furnish important information about the education of 20th century Zaydī-Hādawī scholars and the contents of their libraries. The wide range of Muʿtazilī and non-Muʿtazilī sources used and quoted in the Miftāḥ sheds light on the distinct impact of various phases of a centuries-old school- and teaching-tradition. Last but not least, the article highlights inextricable links between this scholarly milieu and the so-called "Ḥūthī"-movement in contemporary Yemen.
