Digital resource building , Intranet online services and Internet browsing are gaining momentum in technical library services during last few years in order to supplement the modern library services, specifically in the area of research and development activities in different parts of our country, and so is the case with Central Library of Indian Institute Of Technology (I.I.T) at Kharagpur. I.I.T. Kharagpur, being a premier, large and diversified technical institute in the field of science and technology, is always at the fore front of adopting modern practices for providing new kind of services to its community. Annexing Electronic Library (EL) in the year 1995, Central Library , I.I.T. Kharagpur , since then in a continuous process, started acquiring various digitized commercial databases and also applied all other possible means to build up its digitized document collection and services thereof. This paper presents an image of experiences gathered by the 'Author' in augmenting digitized resources and making newer services available thereof to meet the changing needs of the users, focusing on computer based literature search services, electronic SDI, and the like. Author, being an experienced library professional, starts this paper with an introduction to a panoramic view of to-day's library system. He, proceeds further to give a brief account of traditional library services, followed by ,the salient features of the Electronic Library at I.I.T. Kharagpur including collection of digital resources in their stock, unfolding the scope and coverage in each case, such as source of origin, the search and retrieval software, the vendor details, cost of the database and the computer platform used . Further to this 'Author' tries to give reference to the in-house digitized information creation by way of Homepage development and its world wide accessibility through Internet ; creation of web documents through MHRD(Ministry of Human Resource Development) project grant (i.e Archives on Technical Education) . Finally 'Author' concludes this paper with his optimistic idea of emergence of hybrid library system in coming days to maintain parallel collection of documents both in print media as well as in digitized format to supplement and complement the gap in formation need of the users at large.

The academic and research libraries across the globe are striving hard to harness technology for achieving scholarly knowledge management, which is fast proliferating, distributed and scattered. Knowledge Management leveraging on information science (IS) and information technology (IT) is the recent trend and strategy seen in the advanced academic and corporate environment. Building world standard digital libraries, as powerhouses of knowledge, that are able to address the complex issues put forth by the technology push as well as the demand pull are fast catching up worldwide attention. Particularly, in India, Open Digital Library (ODL) initiatives are picking up unprecedented Institutional as well as professional group attention owing to a variety of excellent features offered by these DLs. During the past five years India has been responding to this global trend quite proactively and positively. One of the major reasons being, presently, more than 70 percentage of world's scholarly literature are born digital. Naturally when they are acquired by the libraries for patron's use they will have to be acquired in the digital form. A digital library is a collection of information that is both electronic (born digital) as well as digitized and it gives us powers we never had with traditional libraries. Digital libraries have attracted almost all the developed and developing countries due to its multifaceted features and the opportunities it extend to the information providers and information seekers. It offers new levels of access to broader audiences of users and new opportunities for library and information science field to advance both theory and practice. Creating effective digital libraries and providing cutting edge digital information services poses serious challenges for existing and future technologies. They include collection building, infrastructure, acceptability, access restrictions, readability, standardization, authentication, preservation, copyright, policy and strategic issues, user interface, funding etc. Yet the advantages outweigh most of the bottlenecks and hardships and therefore the importance of digital libraries have been recognized by all nations of the world. India has recognized the power of digital libraries and lots of initiatives are on the move for developing state-of-art digital libraries.

Against the background of the efforts being made to develop a fully-fledged digital library (DL) system in India, however sporadic the efforts may be, this article (a) casts a critical look at what the author regards as fantasies in the minds of Indian LIS professionals about DLs, especially when they discuss the subject on professional forums; (b) makes a brief survey of the realities vis-à-vis the DL system in the Indian context; and (c) offers, against the background of the realities, an outsider’s perspective on what are possible, and what should be possible, in Indian academic libraries, as far as developing a digital environment is concerned. It also addresses some larger issues vis-à-vis DLs with implications for curriculum design and classroom instruction.

Wide geographic region and large diverse population of India is the main barrier to spreading education to the masses. Today now in the 'Digital India Era' digital libraries become a boon for the education system. The government uses technology in many of its activities, and providing high-quality education is among them. A one-stop source for all information needs is the National Digital Library of India (NDLI), it gives access to wide range of information by sources, file types, subjects, and educational levels to anyone and anywhere 24*7. The present paper aims to analyze the current status of NDLI. The information gathered for the latest work from the NDLI's official website and then further evaluated to meet the project goal.
Bengal Rural Base College. Introduction A system has been proposed and developed to store the contents of Institute's Databank as an object of the Digital Library. A structured method has been proposed to organize all the data and a system has been developed which extracts meaningful information from the Data Bank. The proposed Digital Library system architecture, there are several resources that are added to the system. However, they can be divided into two categories, namely physical data sources and digital data sources. Physical data sources are comprised of sources in hard copies available in traditional library and manually catalogued. Digital data sources are comprised of e-books, editorials, published articles, conference proceedings, students' theses or some online blogs etc. First, a standard digital format is devised that describes the type of information (metadata), an institute wants to store about a resource. Metadata fields are selected carefully and then data about the resources is transformed in XML format. Obviously, this process was more challenging for the physical resources compared to digital resources. Digital libraries, or at least their digital collections, unfortunately also have brought their own problems and challenges in areas such as: 1. User authentication for access to collections, 2. Copyright, 3. Digital preservation , 4. Equity of access , 5. Interface design, 6. Interoperability between systems and software, 7. Information organization, 8. Inefficient or non-existent taxonomy practices (especially with historical material), 9. Training and development, 10. Quality of metadata, Exorbitant cost of building/maintaining the terabytes of storage, servers, and redundancies necessary for a functional digital collection. Digital Libraries Trends Manual libraries are limited by storage space; digital libraries have the potential to store much more information, simply because digital information requires very little physical space to contain it. As such, the cost of maintaining a digital library can be much lower than that of a traditional library. There are a plethora of tools and resources online (many that are free) that can be used to create and enhance a digital learning environment. Listed below are resources and tools 21st century library user can use for digital learning. 1. RSS or Social Readers 2. Google+ Communities 3. YouTube Channels

The paper reviews the relevance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) as related to other professions especially, the Library professions. The importance, advantages and limitations of digital library over the traditional library were emphasized. The comparative analyses of the two types of libraries were also discussed. Governments in all tiers of the Nation and Legislators were advised to make policies and legislate bills respectively that can advance the present state of the National grid and improve on the Internet technology infrastructures which are major factors that can drive digitization.
