Defining types of data journalism projects

Defining types of data journalism projects

Abstract:
Data Journalism, this new form of journalism, has attracted significant attention in the last couple of years. It is driven by the availability of digital data and it is considered to be the future of journalism. The introduction of data journalism in the media organizations is gradual, with established media paving the way. Today there is a significant amount of data journalism projects that are being produced all over the world. These projects vary considerably, in terms of structure, and visualization characteristics. Based on suggested classifications this paper will attempt to sketch a detail classification that will take into account various parameters that play an important role in data journalism projects and especially in the visualization part. The first obvious parameter that will be taken into account would be the existence or absence of interactivity. Also the type of interactivity must be taken into account as well. Another parameter that must be examined is the amount of text that is included in the project as well as its role. Specifically, we can have the case where the visualization supplements the text as well as the case where the visualization is the center of the project and the text plays a supplemental role, explaining parts of the visualization.
