Don't Oversell ‘Overspill’: Afghanistan and Emerging Conflicts in Central Asia

There is a growing concern that political transitions in Central Asia could lead to interconnected conflicts, particularly in the context of the impending withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan. The regimes in Central Asia play a significant role in this emerging instability, as they are increasingly being targeted by radical groups and organized crime. Despite these risks, the overspill of violence from Afghanistan into Central Asia has been limited thus far. However, the complicated security dynamics suggest that the focus on combating external terrorism is overshadowing necessary internal reforms and improvements in governance within Central Asian states, which could exacerbate domestic issues and violence. Moving forward, a comprehensive security strategy that attends to the root causes of conflict, alongside broader regional security concerns, is essential for stabilizing Central Asia.
