This article examines ways testimonies and memoirs of Holocaust survivors help us better understand official German documentation, providing a new window onto Nazi slave-labor policies and the flexibility with which they were implemented. It discusses three findings extrapolated primarily from a transport list of 2,187 Jewish slave laborers from the Szkolna camp in Radom who arrived in KL Vaihingen in August 1944 via Auschwitz. It considers their ages, their trades (in particular that of butcher), and other evidence documenting their Holocaust experiences. The article sheds light on how German authorities balanced the ideological imperative of eliminating the Jews against the economic need for their labor.

When the German army invaded Hungary on March 19, Adolf Eichmann and the Gestapo had a free hand to solve what Hitler considered to be the “Jewish problem.” With the aid of the Hungarian gendarmes (the provincial police force) the operation proceeded swiftly, so that by early July about 470,000 Jews had been deported to the German Reich, primarily to Auschwitz. But a number of factors played a role in causing Eichmann and the Gestapo to fail in deporting a remaining Jewish population of Budapest, close to 200,000 persons. The following study shows how and why they failed.

Despite Hitler’s and Eichmann’s secret machinery for the deportation of Jews from the Hungarian provinces, dramatic events finally interrupted the progress of their unprecedented crimes. How this unfolded is the focus of this book. Although many thousands had already perished, a rescue effort saved the Jewish population of Budapest. The initiative resulted from the courageous actions of networks within Hungary and Switzerland. The Auschwitz Report, the detailed revelations of two Slovak escapees, revealed to them the truth about the deportations. They took dangerous risks by aggressively challenging the power of the Nazi extermination program.

Bergen-Belsen was one of the largest and most significant concentration camps operated by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. Among other groups from many countries, tens of thousands of Jews were deported to Belsen in several turns in 1944-1945 from Hungary and from other camps. Most of the Hungarian "Häftlinge" were forced into slavery by the SS, but there were special groups who were captured (from June 1944 to April 1945) by the SS as "exchange Jews". These "hostages" were detained in the "Hungarian Camp" (Ungarnlager or Sonderlager), a special sector of the Exchange Camp (Austauschlager) of Belsen. The first part of the paper gives an overview of the deportation routes to the different camp sectors of Belsen (until December 1944) based on my own research and on the secondary literature's findings. In the second part, I analyse personal narratives of the deportees of the different groups in order to give a complex picture about their personal experiences, feelings, emotions and dilemmas during the deportations. The paper highlights three subtopics: 1. The question of information and misinformation during the transport, that often resulted in rumours among them about their possible future. 2. Trauma narratives in connection with the physical condition. 3. The dual feelings about arrival at camp, depending on the experiences of the various groups right before the arrival. My narrative is primarily based on contemporary or post-war ego-documents (testimonies, and diaries) of the prisoners, principally from the Archives of Gedenkstätte Bergen-Belsen (Bergen-Belsen Memorial) and from the Holocaust Memorial Centre (Holokauszt Emlékközpont, Budapest), and I also used interviews of digital collections.

The memory of the Hungarian Jewish catastrophe was canonised almost immediately after the liberation as the last chapter of deportation to Auschwitz and the systematic annihilation of the last sizable, previously untouched Jewish community of Europe, claiming about 400,000 victims in Auschwitz alone. However, the experiences of the so-called Strasshof deportees could not fit into this narrative perfectly, either from the historians' or the survivors' perspectives. At the end of June 1944, 15,000 persons were transported to the Strasshof distribution camp near Vienna from four Hungarian ghettos. In the camp, a regular slave market was opened to meet the demands of Austrian entrepreneurs, who urgently needed manpower in their factories

After the end of mass deportations in Austria in October of 1942, the Jewish Community in Vienna was officially dissolved by Nazi authorities and reorganized as the so-called Council of Elders, who was put in charge of all remaining people defined as Jewish by Nazi racial laws, independent of their denomination. The majority of the people left behind were protected from deportation because they were members of an intermarried family with a non-Jewish spouse or parent. As mall fragment of the Jewish population was able to remain in Vienna as employees of the Council, working as doctors, nurses, cooks, caregivers, cleaning staff, or clerical workers in the remaining institutions of the former Jewish Community. In addition, a tiny fraction of the remaining Jewish population was protected by foreign citizenship. The protection of this heterogeneous group was often temporary, since diplomatic considerations regarding foreign citizenship were subject to changes and the number of Council employees was continuously reduced by orders of the authorities. This article focuses on the deportations of previously protected groups from Vienna's Nordbahnhof - until recently a largely unknown site of deportations.

The Fate of 435 Jewish Individuals Deported from Dresden to Theresienstadt between 1942 and 1944

Making Germany Judenfrei (free of Jews) or Judenrein (purified of Jews) was one of the pillars of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party in Germany. One means of achieving this from 1941 onwards was the deportation of Jewish people to ghettoes or death camps in the occupied territories, primarily Poland, but also including Bohemia (now in the Czech Republic) where the Theresienstadt Ghetto was located.As part of this criminal act, 435, mainly elderly Jews were deported from Dresden to the Theresienstadt from 1942 to 1944. Using the personal information shown on the Gestapo deportation lists, this study shows that new facts about the fate of these people can emerge when the information provided is analysed on a group basis. It can also corroborate information provided elsewhere. For example, the extremely high death rate (87%) suffered by these people from Dresden echoes the overall death rate of 84% given by Yad Vashem for the 118,000 unfortunate individuals who were in the Ghetto and ...
