Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a bimodal radiotherapeutic treatment based on the irradiation of neoplastic tissues with neutrons after the tissues have selectively accumulated molecules loaded with nuclides with large neutron capture cross-sections (such boron-10). Boron-10 carriers have been tested to a limited extent, and clinical trials have been conducted on sulfhydryl borane (10B-BSH) and boronophenylalanine (10B-BPA). However, precise and accurate measurements of boron-10 concentrations (0.1–100 μg/g) in specimens and samples of limited size (μg scale) are needed in order to be able to biologically characterise new compounds in predictive tissue dosimetry, toxicology and pharmacology studies as well as in clinical investigations. A new approach based on fast separation and detection of 10B-BPA performed by coupling capillary electrophoresis to electrospray mass spectrometry is reported. This method allows the quantitative analysis and characterisation of 10B-BPA in a short time with a high separation efficiency. Detection limits of 3 μM for 10B-BPA and 30 ng/mL for 10B were obtained with CE–ESI–MS. A quantification limit of 10 μM for 10B-BPA (100 ng/mL for 10B) was attained. The total boron-10 concentration was determined by high-resolution inductively coupled mass spectrometry in order to validate the method. Boron-10 isotope measurements were carried out by HR–ICP–MS at medium resolution (R=4000) due to the presence of an isobaric interference at mass 10. Good agreement was obtained between the values from CE–ESI–MS and those from HR–ICP–MS. The method has been successfully used to determine the 10B-BPA in two lines of cultured cells.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) involves administration of a tumor selective boron compound followed by neutron irradiation directed at the target organ. Several studies have shown antitumor activity in animal models with BNCT using the amino acid analog boronophenylalanine (BPA). This study investigates the pharmacological toxicity of BPA in rabbits and the acute (14 days) and subacute (100 days) radiotoxicity of cranial BNCT with BPA in normal mice. To assess the toxicity of BPA alone the drug was administered orally in either a single dose of 5,000 mg/kg or 5 divided doses of 1,000 mg/kg/day to rabbits which were subsequently sacrificed at 2.5 or 4.5 weeks. To study the radiotoxic effects of BNCT mice were given BPA orally followed by cranial irradiation with a thermal neutron beam 3 hr later, with resulting brain doses ranging from 1,100 to 2,750 cGy‐Eq [compound‐relative biological effectiveness (C‐RBE) of 1.3 for 10B, 3.2 for neutrons, and 1.0 for gammas]. This study evaluated the pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of 4-borono-2-(18)F-fluoro-l-phenylalanine ((18)F-FBPA) after intracarotid injection and with blood-brain barrier disruption (BBB-D) in F98 glioma-bearing F344 rats. The pharmacokinetics of l-p-boronophenylalanine (BPA) and (18)F-FBPA following different administration routes were compared to demonstrate the optimal delivery route and the time period for thermal neutron irradiation. F98 glioma-bearing rats were injected intravenously or intracarotidly with (18)F-FBPA and BPA and with or without mannitol-induced hyperosmotic BBB-D. L-p-Boronophenylalanine (BPA) has been applied as a potential boron carrier for the treatment of malignant glioma in clinical boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) since 1994. To provide the pharmacokinetics of BPA for clinical use of BNCT in Taiwan, 4-borono-2-(18)F-fluoro-L-phenylalanine-fructose ((18)F-FBPA-Fr) was synthesized and the biologic characteristics of this radiotracer in glioma-bearing rats were investigated. Radiolabeled (18)F-F(2) was produced via the (20)Ne(d,alpha)(18)F reaction, and (18)F-acetyl hypofluorite ((18)F-AcOF) was generated by passing (18)F-F(2) through a column filled with tightly packed KOAc/HOAc powder. The effluent containing (18)F-AcOF was bubbled into BPA in trifluoroacetic acid, then purified by high-performance liquid chromatography, and further composited with fructose to afford (18)F-FBPA-Fr. Geography, a significant socio-spatial science, has the unique potential of simultaneously connecting the physical and the natural world. While understanding physical space, Geography also studies how people as the ‘agents of change’ transform it, and produce human space. Accordingly, Geography is divided broadly into Physical Geography and Human Geography – the former studies physical space, while latter studies the human space. This book is an introduction to Human Geography for the beginners of the discipline. It is written keeping in view the entry-level syllabus of the undergraduate Geography courses of the Arts and Science Faculty. The book is useful for entry-level undergraduates, competitive examination aspirants, and all those who wish to learn Human Geography. The book is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the branch of Human Geography with the help of its nature, scope, sub-branches, approaches, and thoughts on the human-environment relationship. The following three chapters focus on three important themes of Human Geography - settlements, population, and migration. As maps are one of the tools to study human geography, the last chapter offers an introduction to maps with special reference to thematic maps.

Cu o istorie de circa 125 de ani, asocierea în participație a reușit să se impună în viața juridică cotidiană ca o prezență uzuală, familiară, fără a suscita serioase probleme (doctrinare sau jurisprudențiale deopotrivă). O reglementare mai mult decât compactă – art. 251-256 C.com. – plasată la Titlul VIII Despre societăți și despre asociațiuni comerciale, Capitolul II Despre asociațiuni (după Capitolul I Despre societăți), Secțiunea I Despre asociațiunea în participațiune (urmată de Secțiunea II Despre asociațiunea de asigurare mutuală). Topografia legală plasa într-un mod aproape indubitabil această fizionomie juridică în zona societăților (ca gen proxim), fiind un fel de specie a acestora – o asociațiune (asociere în limbajul actualului cod civil). Trebuie menționat că și modelul său direct, codul comercial italian (1881) vedea lucrurile la fel (Titlul IX Despre societăți, Capitolul II Despre asociații, Secțiunea I Despre asociațiunea în participație (Dell`associazione in partecipazione) art. 233-238 C.com.it.1882). Codul civil din 2011 (cu greu mai poate fi numit nou, împlinind în scurt timp 10 ani de când a intrat în vigoare) a decis preluarea acestei „entități” din codul comercial, nu fără a improviza și a completa/modifica/inova/brutaliza reglementarea preluată. Codul civil o plasează, mimetic, după reglementarea Societății simple, transformând-o, de fapt, într-o anexă a acesteia (Capitolul VII Contractul de societate, Secțiunea 1 Dispoziții generale, Secțiunea 2 Societatea simplă, Secțiunea 3 Asocierea în participație). Totul pare a fi firesc și normal, la prima vedere, „tradiția” continuă, secolul nouăsprezece face loc secolului douăzeci și unu, dispozițiile vechi și-a primenit straiele ... Doar că, lucrurile s-ar putea să nu fie chiar atât de simple precum par la prima vedere. Actualul cod civil reglementează în premieră o altă fizionomie juridică, veche și nouă în același timp. Veche pentru că întotdeauna a fost prezentă, într-un fel sau altul în reglementările anterioare, trăgându-și seva din îndepărtatul drept roman – fiducia (sau mai bine spus mecanismele fiduciare). Nouă pentru că este prima reglementare în care această figură juridică prinde contur concret – reglementarea de principiu a fiduciei (Titlul IV Fiducia, art. 773-791 C.civ.). Privită prin prisma acestui mecanism ancestral, asocierea în participație nu mai este ceea ce pare a fi – o specie de societate, ci, într-un mod spectaculos, o specie de fiducie (fiducie administrare romană) – fiducia cum amico. În cele ce urmează vom încerca, pe scurt, să analizăm aceste aspecte care ar putea conduce la o „recalificare” a naturii juridice a acestei operațiuni, pe de o parte, pe de altă parte vom încerca să analizăm „intervenția” legiuitorului modern, finuț, precum un elefant în prăvălia de porțelanuri... Cuvinte cheie: asociere în participație, societate, patrimoniu, transfer patrimonial, răspundere, terț, solidaritate pasivă, fiducie, operațiune fiduciară.

The main objective of this study is to determine the design steps of an industrial plant electrical system in the light of energy availability, continuity, safety and economic equipment selection. This study is not only dealing with design steps, but also analyzing alternative solutions with their positive and negative impacts. Steps to be given in the following paragraphs will reduce possible system design delaying, equipment selection and quotation. As it is known, the engineering data and selected configuration during design stage will be used for electrical system cost estimation. The final equipment cost will be obtained after detailed engineering design completion. But differences between estimation and final costs are not so high if a methodology is followed as It is given in this study.

In this paper we deal with instability problems of structures under nonconservative loading. It is shown that such class of problems should be analyzed in dynamics framework. Next to analytic solutions, provided for several simple problems, we show how to obtain the numerical solutions to more complex problems in efficient manner by using the finite element method. In particular, the numerical solution is obtained by using a modified Euler-Bernoulli beam finite element that includes the von Karman (virtual) strain in order to capture linearized instabilities (or Euler buckling). We next generalize the numerical solution to instability problems that include shear deformation by using the Timoshenko beam finite element. The proposed numerical beam models are validated against the corresponding analytic solutions.

Multicomponent commutations relations (MCRs) describe plektons, i.e. multicomponent quantum systems with a generalized statistics. In such systems, exchange of quasiparticles is governed by a unitary matrix [Formula: see text] that depends on the position of quasiparticles. For such an exchange to be possible, the matrix must satisfy several conditions, including the functional Yang–Baxter equation. The aim of the paper is to give an appropriate definition of a quasi-free state on an MCR algebra, and construct such states on a class of MCR algebras. We observe a significant difference between the classical setting for bosons and fermions and the setting of MCR algebras. We show that the developed theory is applicable to systems that contain quasiparticles of opposite type. Background Background: Recent guidelines recommend immediate empiric antibiotic treatment for patients (pts) with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).
