Engineering Interns

We're looking for engineering interns to work closely with the rest of our team.

Academia.edu is a rapidly growing social network with a user base of over 1,330,296 researchers. Our interns help us to build features, fix bugs, and improve the overall user experience.

What we're looking for

  • We'd like you to have some experience with one or both of the following:
    • Building Web applications in an MVC style. Rails experience is a plus but not required, as long as you've used something similar like Django or CakePHP.
    • Front-end development using JavaScript and CSS. Bonus points if you've tried CoffeeScript, Sass, or Less.
  • You should be a quick study and attentive to detail. You don't need to be an expert on everything we do, but you should be able to pick up the basics fast enough to make useful contributions.
  • We'll need you to work on site in San Francisco, either part-time or full-time, for at least four weeks.

What we're offering

  • A monthly stipend. The amount will depend on your experience and performance, and is likely to grow significantly if you exceed our expectations.
  • The opportunity to learn close-up about the inner workings of a high-growth startup with a small team.
  • A unique professional experience to add to your résumé. You'll have the opportunity to make significant contributions to the product and gain valuable, hands-on training.
  • Free lunch! We'll reimburse you for lunch from any of the many restaurants in the area. We'll also pay for any travel expenses.

Applying

Please email Ryan Jordan at with your résumé and a brief cover letter.

To make your application stand out, you can sign up to Academia.edu and let us know what you think of the site. What's good and bad about the user experience? Which features do you like, and what features do you think are missing?

If you're not affiliated with a university, you can sign up as an independent researcher. Please be as detailed as possible in your comments.

We're also looking for software engineers.
