When young people are involved, the evidence is somehow further relegated by panicked discourses around bullying, obesity, delinquency, information overload, chronic anxiety and a bevy of claims about the anti-social implications of the internet. Wired Youth, by Gustavo S. Mesch and Ilan Talmud, cuts through this hyperbole to provide a meticulously well-supported set of arguments that position the internet as increasingly incorporated into the daily lives of young people. Mesch and Talmud weigh the positives and the negatives, seeking to understand the motivation for online relationship formation and to explore the structure of young people’s social networks in the ‘information age’.

The city, however, had a rich musical tradition going back decades. This thesis examines the rise and fall of music communities in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest from the 1950s to the 1990s: the jazz mileu in Seattle in the 1950s, the Pacific Northwest garage rock network of the 1960s, and the alternative music community of the 1980s and early 1990s. It looks at the factors involved in the development of these three distinct scenes: timing, innovation, and marketability, showing the opportunities and limitations of regional music milieux. In doing so, it reveals a trend of musicians of each scene departing Seattle for more major industry centres like Los Angeles. What separated the milieu Nirvana participated in from earlier regional communities was the fact musicians stopped leaving Seattle. This thesis shows why it was finally more beneficial for them to stay.

From a comparative analysis of the novel and its two cinematic adaptations, Lolita stands out as an embodiment of the “garden” described by Leo Marx, soon to be invaded by Humbert's “machine.” The result is a powerful and disturbing representation of America as youth, uncovering the violence and coercion of any act of civilization.
Youth sense of community: Voice and power in community contexts

Unfortunately, young people have no voice or influence in many of the contexts in which they find themselves. Furthermore, teenagers are often unequipped and undersupported to participate fully and feel like they are making meaningful contributions to society. This is especially the case for young people who are disadvantaged or members of a minority groups. A two-part study was undertaken to explore sense of community in adolescents. The first phase utilized existing tools to measure adolescent sense of community in school, neighborhood, and city contexts. The second phase of the study relied on in-depth interviews with teenagers to better understand how they construct their sense of community. This article reports findings from the second phase and looks closely at the sense of community domain of “influence” as it applies to adolescents. Interviews with young people suggest that they feel a stronger self-described sense of community in contexts where they experience voice and resonance, some power and influence, and adequate adult support and challenge.

Seen by:Not so NEET? A critique of the use of 'NEET'in setting targets for interventions with young people

One of the key foci for combating social exclusion thus aims at reducing the numbers of young people who are NEET. This is reflected in the ‘programme theories’ of the Connexions service, whose effectiveness is measured in relation to targets for reducing the numbers of NEET young people. This paper argues, however, that ‘NEET’ is a problematic concept that defines young people by what they are not, and subsumes under a negatively-perceived label a heterogeneous mix of young people whose varied situations and difficulties are not conceptualised. Additionally, research evidence suggests that adherence to NEET-reduction targets encourages a ‘fire-fighting’ approach to working with young people rather than focusing support and intervention on areas where they may be most productive.

The electoral participation is determined by a series of socioeconomic, institutional and contextual issues. The effect that these factors generate in electorate has been studied by diverse academic trends. A series of theories that we will use in our approach to the study of Chilean youth behaviour and its relation with political participation. This age group high rates of abstentions will be the object of our attention

The paper intends to address both adolescence and youth as an object of knowledge as well as an object of policy intervention. After providing the history of the ways in which political discourses converge with scientific researches and construct age categories, I suggest an analysis of the numerous semantic coincidences that one can find when the question of youth autonomy is assessed. Finally, this article attempts to give some clues in order to answer the following question: how sociologist could practice his craft in a context of huge diffusion of his knowledge and his frequent access to the figure of expert?
