Hacker-inspired peer projects are also characterised by the tension between openness and elitism; what distinguishes Wikipedians from outsiders is their familiarity with project language and rules. Domination in Web 2.0 projects such as Wikipedia is distributed: this means that new entrants can rapidly attain powerful positions, resulting in a multiplicity of autonomous leaders. This paper argues that a good way to understand this distribution of power is to examine the roles of people within the Wikipedia organisational structure. Occupying a recognised role means that people can operate as authorities who legitimately exercise restraining actions over other participants.
Wikifying the CBC: Reimagining the remit of public service media

This paper describes the research and development of an online collaborative environment for Canadian music fans. The project to set up a music wiki at CBC Radio 3 balances the need to provide an open and creative space with the desire of a public broadcaster to publish high quality user-generated content that showcases Canadian music. It is an example of the adoption of a collaborative knowledge system within the context of public
service broadcasting in the 21st century, exploring the application of social media technologies within established media organizations, and specifically within the role and
remit of Canada’s public service broadcaster. A music wiki provides a particularly relevant topic given the digital evolution of the music industry and the increasing role of the fan in a participatory culture, which scholars argue is transforming the relationship between producer and consumer. Our findings indicate that user-generated digital technologies represent one way of reimagining radio for the web. We suggest that an
innovative initiative such as a wiki can be undertaken within low-risk areas of a public broadcaster, particularly when they are in line with the strategic mandate of the organization. The funding model further minimizes the financial risk to the broadcaster, suggesting there is potential for publicly funded university partnerships to stimulate new media research and development at incumbent journalism organizations.
Visualisation of Trajectories of Participation in a Wiki: A Basis for Feedback and Assessment?

However, assessment of such practices is not well accounted for. We analyse data from a four year intervention study where teachers and researchers collaborated in developing a wiki to afford relevant tasks and assessment of students’ activities. Our findings show that material tools may afford and make visible ideas for future assessment practices, but that such practices have not materialized beyond ‘what might be’.
The SEQanswers wiki: a wiki database of tools for high-throughput sequencing analysis
Recent advances in sequencing technology have created unprecedented opportunities for biological research. However,... more Recent advances in sequencing technology have created unprecedented opportunities for biological research. However, the increasing throughput of these technologies has created many challenges for data management and analysis. As the demand for sophisticated analyses increases, the development time of software and algorithms is outpacing the speed of traditional publication. As technologies continue to be developed, methods change rapidly, making publications less relevant for users. The SEQanswers wiki (SEQwiki) is a wiki database that is actively edited and updated by the members of the SEQanswers community (http://SEQanswers.com/). The wiki provides an extensive catalogue of tools, technologies and tutorials for high-throughput sequencing (HTS), including information about HTS service providers. It has been implemented in MediaWiki with the Semantic MediaWiki and Semantic Forms extensions to collect structured data, providing powerful navigation and reporting features. Within 2 years, the community has created pages for over 500 tools, with approximately 400 literature references and 600 web links. This collaborative effort has made SEQwiki the most comprehensive database of HTS tools anywhere on the web. The wiki includes task-focused mini-reviews of commonly used tools, and a growing collection of more than 100 HTS service providers. SEQwiki is available at: http://wiki.SEQanswers.com/.
WikiGIS Basic Concepts: Web 2.0 for Geospatial Collaboration

These applications offer to both professionals and citizens an open and expanded access to geographic information. In this paper, we develop the conceptual foundations of a new technology solution called WikiGIS. WikiGIS’s strength lies in its ability to ensure the traceability of changes in spatial-temporal geographic components (geometric location and shape, graphics: iconography and descriptive) generated by users. The final use case highlights to what extent WikiGIS could be a relevant and useful technological innovation in Geocollaboration.

Post–9/11 reports, recommendations, directives, and legislation uniformly point to the need for the IC to move from the existing “need to know” mode to one of “need to share” and “responsibility to provide.” Initiatives like Intellipedia and A-Space have been held out as successes, but they have not fundamentally changed the “finished report” model of intelligence production. Grassroots adoption of new tools by eager young analysts has only gone so far, and the IC is in danger of not achieving the agility it needs to respond to today’s threats. Perils like Wikileaks threaten to undo the progress that has been made. What can be done to transform intelligence into a “living” product?

I write as a participant-observer, with extensive experience as a Lostpedia reader and editor. The article uses the "digital breadcrumbs" of wikis to trace the history of fan creativity, participation, game play, and debates within a shared site of community fan engagement. Using the Lostpedia site as a case study of fan praxis, the article highlights how issues like competing fandoms, copyright, and modes of discourse become manifest via the user-generated content of a fan wiki.
