The area of interest for this study is a popular tourist destination, an island off the Danish West coast, having more than 1 million overnight stays yearly, mostly in summer cottages and on camping grounds. The main attraction of the island is the wide beach and tracts relatively unspoilt nature. Local and regional authorities and tourist business operators are trying to expand the season from summer into the shoulder seasons and widen the range of attractions to include among others art, music, gastronomy and watching of seals and birds.
The island, having an area of 57km2 and 3200 inhabitants constitutes a separate municipality, with the possibility of having its own public service, land use and tourism policy. Within the framework of the local ”agenda 21” group, the central objective is maintaining a sustainable development allowing tourism to evolve while protecting nature and respecting the people who live year-round on the island. Meanwhile there is an ongoing process towards dedicating the Danish Wadden Sea area as National Park.
A project has recently been outlined for restoring a lake between two rows of coastal dunes, potentially home to many breeding and migrating birds. The project includes access for visitors and the set-up of an information system on animal, plants and the land use history of the coast and the southern part of the island. Our university department was approached by the Agenda group to assist with defining the user requirements and clarify the technological possibilities in setting up a wireless information system for the area around the restored lake. It should preferably be possible to access the system with normal mobile phones or phones with technology expecting to be incorporated in the near future, especially location awareness enabled through inclusion of GPS receivers, but also sounds and images of phenomena and species encountered by visitors to the area. The information system should be so flexible that it can be expanded to include larger parts or all of the proposed national park. Temporally, the mobile parts of the system should concentrate on the on-destination and on-site activities of the visitors.
The technological background survey is currently taking place within the framework of a EU-supported inter-regional project. The aim of this project is to analyse interregional and transnational learning processes in the field of tourism, thereby identifying strategies, which have proven successful in the development of sustainable tourism. We have thus identified site management and information dissimination strategies that should be feasible for the proposed project, and are currently designing ways of collecting and managing relevant information and for presentation on web sites and mobile devices. Interviews with local and regional tourism professionals have revealed a solid infrastructure for tourist information at the national level, but the information at local level is varied in density and quality, similarly the users friendliness of the systems (particularly web sites). The main challenge we thus find is to collect and mediate relavant information to be presented by the system, another challenge is to construct the system in a way that allows it to be interactively in tourist activties on the location and on-site, for instance in geocaching or treasure hunts tailored for e.g. families or schools. The Internet based part of the system should allow for user contributed content and sharing of experiences, followed vigilantly by destination and site managers as a source of visitor feedback and potential complaints (among others).
Finally, we conclude that the current case study has underlined the importance of assuring the quality and availability of relevant information along with the technical set-up of a site-based information system for visitors. A functioning multi-medial site information system can contribute positively to a destination management system. We expect this development project to contribute positively to the interregional project in which it is integrated, although the transfer of knowledge and experience exchange part of the learning process are still to take place. This learning and knowledge transfer process will be monitored closely, and subsequently evaluated and reported upon.

After the pioneering... more This paper presents an overview of the Dutch Wadden Sea from a sedimentological point of view. After the pioneering work of scientists new impulses to this kind of research are being given by the need for detailed recent analogues of fossil hydrocarbon-containing rock successions and by the great concern about the future of our coastline in relation to accelerated sea-level rise. After many studies of a descriptive nature in the past, there is now a growing tendency so a more dynamical view to the Wadden Sea system. There is a strong interdependence between various tidal sub-environments within individual inlet systems. Together these sub-environments form so-called Sand Sharing Systems, whose behaviour is largely defined by the tidal prism and the wave climate. Such a dynamical approach may greatly facilitate the research and understanding o fossil barrier-related sediments. Apart from the physical processes the abundant biota plays also an important role in the sedimentological development of the Wadden Sea. The large amount of data on the development of the Wadden Sea in pre-historical and historical times, moreover, allows to test hypotheses about the evolution of the system on the scale of centuries to millennia.
Ebb-tidal delta deposits along the west Frisian Islands (The Netherlands): process, facies, architecture, and preservation

The morphologies of the ebb-tidal deltas of Texel, Terschelling and Ameland inlets and the resulting sand transport... more The morphologies of the ebb-tidal deltas of Texel, Terschelling and Ameland inlets and the resulting sand transport patterns are greatly influenced by the interaction of shore-parallel tidal currents with tidal currents through the inlets. These three inlets and their ebb-tidal deltas are similar in many aspects, and together they differ from North American Atlantic coast examples and from those of the East Frisian Islands. Sedimentary facies and sequences, and sand body geometry of these three inlets/ebb-tidal deltas are strongly controlled by this interaction of offshore tidal currents, tidal currents through the inlets, and waves. The interaction and relative strength of both tidal current systems determine the flow patterns and and orientations of the main ebb channels in the ebb-tidal deltas. Different orientations of (asymmetrical) ebb-tidal deltas as compared to those along the East Frisian Islands and the U.S. east coast, as well as a change of the general orientation of the main ebb channel of the ebb-tidal delta of Texel Inlet since the 16th century, are related to differences and changes in the relative importance of tidal currents and waves. Waves and longshore drift tend to force the ebb-tidal delta into an updrift asymmetry. Under the present regime of waves and longshore drift in this area, the critical boundary between updrift and downdrift asymmetry appears to be at a tidal prism on the order of 500 . 10^6 m^3. The volume of ebb-tidal delta sand bodies is approximately 1 km^3 (Texel), a considerable part of which can be preserved in the fossil record. Holocene deposits off the West Frisian Islands indeed show that preservation of ebb-tidal delta deposits during a rise of relative sea level is possible under certain conditions. The strength of tidal influence is of great importance for for determining both the basal boundary and the seaward extent of the ebb-tidal delta systems. Thus, it is inferred that preservation potential of ebb-tidal delta deposits can be positively correlated with the relative dominance of ebb-tides during their formation.

Regional produce has gained importance as an asset for regional development in recent years. A growing appreciation of regional specialities by tourists has highlighted the potential benefits of cooperation between agricultural producers and the tourism sector. This paper describes and compares two projects that aim at enhancing the consumption of regional produce in the Wadden Sea regions of Denmark and Germany, and potentially adding value to tourism offers.
The German initiative "Uthlande Produkte" aims at improving marketing opportunities for meat products, and intends to strengthen regional economic cycles and value creation within the North Frisian region of Uthlande. The association “Vadehavsprodukter” (Danish Wadden Sea Products) aims to improve the competitive position of local businesses by designing and executing a joint marketing strategy under the brand name “Vadehavsguld”. The two projects are reviewed with regard to drivers, barriers, processes and networks of innovation, which are considered important elements for assessing their contribution to local economy and sustainable development.
