A Visual Approach to Multiculturalism

Each different perspective on the subject adds another dimension to our understanding of this complex, and changing phenomena. Offered here is a visual approach to one of its more ubiquitous versions, ethnic diversity, as it is expressed in the appearance of vernacular landscapes. It is argued that there is something about ethnic vernacular landscapes that can be best grasped via the use of image-based research. It is also suggested that such an approach might provide some needed focus to the inter- and intra-disciplinary debates over cultural diversity in its many scientific and related ideological forms.

Visual culture studies have become the focus of research in recent years mainly due to the frequent use of art applications in Visual Arts courses in primary schools and the inadequate content of discipline based art education
for the interpretation of today’s multiple stimulants. By interrogating students’ semantic stratums related
to visuals, visual culture studies carried out in Visual Arts courses can help students gain a different perspective
regarding artistic studies. The present study aimed finding out how visual culture studies can be carried
out in Visual Arts courses in primary schools. The study had an action research design and was conducted during the 10 hours class-time of a Visual Arts course in a third-grade class of a primary school in Eskişehir in the fall semester of 2007-2008 academic year. The data of the present study, which was conducted on seven focal students, were collected with various data collection tools, such as demographic information scale, video recordings, semi-structured interviews, document analysis, researcher diaries and student diaries. The collected
data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The present study revealed that the students effectively participated
in visual culture studies; that they made critical interrogations by broadening their thoughts based on their previous knowledge; and that they found the course more entertaining thanks to the visual culture studies. In conclusion, findings of the study suggest that visual art applications, which will encourage students to criticize
cultural meanings within the Visual Art Curriculum, may be used as a strong instrument to help students interpret
the visual world and become more efficient in expressing their ideas in art works.

In this article and an accompanying online resource, I propose to examine the technology behind High Definition (HD), identifying key areas of understanding to enable an enquiry into those aesthetics that might derive from the technical imperatives within the medium. (This article is accompanied by a series of online interviews entitled A Verbatim History of the Aesthetics, Technology and Techniques of Digital Cinematography. To access this please go to http://www.flaxton.btinternet.co.uk/KTV.htm This resource seeks to circumscribe and circumlocute the wide variety of interests and usages of incoming digital media with specific relation to the effects of increased definition being offered by incoming digital technologies). Having discussed the aesthetics of HD I will then proceed to look at the consequent artistic and cultural implications. The article con- cludes by challenging the current academic position of the digital as being inherently immaterial.

The intrinsic breadth of various types of images creates new possibilities and challenges for the educational designer of learning processes. Digital media have moved the boundaries between images and other kinds of modalities (e.g. writing, speech and sound) and have augmented the possibilities for integrating images and visuality in new forms of knowledge-building and in new learning cultures. The paper presents a technological and domain-oriented approach to understanding the learning potential and functions of images and visuality. The paper argues that the potential of the domain of images – both in terms of design and knowledge – is only made into an active part of educational design if the producer is skilled and knowledgeable about this.

This writing sprint focused “on collaborative knowledge management and writing, around the topic of realtime video performance." This gathering of practitioners aimed at creating a stable description and definition of VJing as artistic practice and resulted in an immediate central outcome: the development of a Wikipedia page. Participants of this one week-long marathon of writing, arrived to Geneva from several locations such as Brighton, Porto, Saskatoon and Maine and participated online from several other locations, such as Singapore, Prague, San Francisco and New York.

In the year of its 5th anniversary, Sound:Frame is putting the emphasis on the process of making / developing live performance and how it relates to content and form through a wonderful program of performances, installations and talks. This emphasis is expressed and summarized in the word ‘PerFORMance’.
This text will focus on questions of form in the performative moment and on the creative process. It will also relate performance and process to its possibilities in expanding beyond the limits of its existence as part of the construction of memory of its related community.

This article examines the rise of vigilantism in southeastern Nigeria. Two opposing discourses on Nigerian vigilantism are examined. The first is characterized by the valorization of vigilantes as heroes in popular Nigerian video movies. The second is represented by a recent Human Rights Watch (HRW) report denouncing the vigilantes as criminals. My research utilizes ethnographic research to contextualize the video movies as a means toward understanding the ideological gap between these discourses. A close analysis of the Issakaba video series reveals a subtle treatment of the vigilante phenomenon designed to appeal to an indigenous perspective that is cognizant of the inherent risks of vigilante justice but also aware of the limitations of reform strategies such as those proposed by the HRW report.
