This dissertation attempted to build on: a previous desk-based study of the published caucus by (Beddoes 2009); previous artefactual studies by Longworth (1984) and Bellhouse (1992), and landscape studies by Bellhouse (1967), Higham (1978; 1982), Higham & Jones (1985), Bewley (1994) and the Skiddaw Mapping Project 2000 (SMP 2000).
The aim was to conduct a non-invasive study of Aughertree Fell during the prehistoric period by focusing on non-destructive techniques, drawing upon recent theories of prehistoric theories landscape and settlement, to understand better how people have dwelt over millennia on Aughertree Fell.
The methodologies used were: a museum-based study that photographs artefacts, and catalogues or makes notes from the paper archives held by Tullie House Museum in Carlisle; an aerial interpretive map and an unstructured walkover survey, with the aim of making a preliminary gazetteer of landscape features. The results were presented in each chapter, followed by varying degrees of discussion from the specific to the general.
The extent of the environs chosen for this study are bounded by tributaries of the River Ellen and based on Spratt’s (1981) model of Bronze Age estates (Kitchen 2001:113).

Abstract: Herding mobility can be understood as an excellent interpretive tool for understanding settlement, subsistence and territorialization patterns of pre-Roman communities in West Cantabrian area (North of Spain). Due to the use of summer pasture areas, mountains were populated with certain density and particular processes in the construction of socio-political and subsistencial landscape were developed up there. Material speeches are recognized aimed at strengthening and claiming the usufruct of the pasture areas by different groups and at different stages of Prehistory in a long durée perspective. In this paper, several working hypotheses which rely on some ethnoarchaeological readings will be presented synthetically. That will illuminate the interpretive discourse.

In this paper we present our approach for research to verify the existence of different patterns of settlement in the high Pyrenean mountain areas, particularly in the Pallars (Lleida, Catalan Pyrenees Western)as well as providing the first results that confirm this hypothesis . To do this we have compared the works write by an anthropologist of the early twentieth century on lifestyles in the region with the archaeological record found in archaeological survey campaigns in the National Park Aigüestortes. The intention is to compare the archaeological register with the nomadic livestock model described in the ethnographic sources for try to infer changes in social practices throughout history.

It forms a complex of special interest, because it could offer new data about forms of seasonal settlement of megalith builders groups. The construction of a wind farm in this area serves to raise some reflections on Heritage Management and the relationship between Archeology and Society.

This thesis developed existing approaches to remote-sensing in archaeology by evaluating the use of resistivity survey on granite moorland.
Explaining the formation of the widespread enclosures that survive across Dartmoor, in southwest England, generally rests on the extensive research conducted into their chronology by Andrew Fleming in the 1970s and 80s. This work, which focused on surveying and partly excavating the alignments, found that the field systems were laid out as a uniform system of enclosure, over a single chronological horizon towards the mid 2nd millennium BC. However, subsequent investigations have highlighted evidence for their complex and deep-rooted development (Butler 1991-1997). Yet, its implications for the accepted view of these enclosures are poorly understood. Following this, recent work on field systems on Dartmoor (Brück et al 2005) has piloted a battery of additional recording techniques to investigate previously unknown field-system components. This research, which was conducted at Shovel Down (2003 and 2004), included the piloting of resistivity survey to investigate building or boundary remains concealed beneath the Moor's surface.
Expert opinion is generally negative about the usefulness of resistivity on granite, even though such claims are inadequately supported by field-testing. Consequently, the apparent success of the surveys offered an valuable counter-point to such views. Excavations in 2005 set out to test this. This document reports on these investigations and also evaluates the findings of the resistivity survey. It confirms that resistivity can provide useful extra information about underlying field-settlement systems in these landscapes. However, it also identifies limitations to the technique and approaches to its interpretation. In doing so, it is hoped that an important contribution is made to our understanding of landscape recording methods and resistance survey in particular.
