This research... more Interpersonal pragmatics has been under-represented in research on screen translation (Mason, 1989). This research lacuna is unfortunate when considering languages such as Korean, in which notions such as familiarity and status receive obligatory morphosyntactic representation. A particularly interesting area of Korean pragmatics is style shift, a phenomenon by which interlocutors switch speech levels due to strategic or normative considerations. This study investigates 16 instances of style shift, which occur in 64 episodes of two Korean teledramas. An analysis of scenes and their English subtitles reveals that: (1) style shift occurs for strategic reasons, often to depict interlocutors’ coldness or rage; (2) it also occurs for normative reasons, reflecting important shifts in the relationships of characters; (3) it is additionally used to convey relational frames of discourse; (4) it is sometimes redundant, especially when used to express angry outbursts; and (5) it is often neglected, particularly when used as a dramatic device to show a change in a relationship or when used to demonstrate characters’ struggle with inherent ambiguity in relationships. The study confirms Hatim and Mason’s (1997) finding that neglect of pragmatic phenomena is a potential problem in screen translation, and suggests a greater need for descriptive and best-practices research in this area.

This paper addresses the issue of foreign language education with special focus on the teaching of translation and its... more This paper addresses the issue of foreign language education with special focus on the teaching of translation and its impact on language proficiency and knowledge transfer in the Arab World. Languages are the vehicles of thought and feelings among the human communities. The question is: where do we need to focus our teaching efforts of foreign languages? Is it useful to enable people to speak the language as native-like or is it more useful to people to be professional in translation so as to read and acquire knowledge in their own mother tongue? Translation played the major role in bridging the physical gap between all nations. It is also evident that speaking the foreign language does not help too much in the transfer of knowledge to human communities as translation does. Translation is considered by Lado (1975:25) as the fifth language skill. We believe that it is the most important language skill, as translation renders information to millions of people in their own languages. Learning a language alone does not qualify people that much to achieve development, but transferring knowledge via translation does; because translation enriches both the source and the target languages with new ideas and new linguistic features.

Sebald claims that he writes his prose fiction, “aus irgendeinem Grunde, den ich noch nicht ganz durchschaut habe, hauptsächlich eben in deutscher Sprache”. But, looking closely, the reader of Sebald’s writings will recognize early on the relatively frequent use of foreign language, often without any warning, in the middle of a sentence. Reading these untranslated elements together with reflections on the German language in Sebald’s texts, this paper proposes to understand these non-German passages as “resistances” against an overall “Germanness”, avoiding any kind of linguistic “chauvinism” and opening out to other languages. This results in a text that is harder to translate on the one hand, but propels it also away from a “too” German form and possibly audience on the other. Similar to Sebald’s inclusion of images, the untranslated elements strengthen the documentary character of the text and confront the reader with something other/outside a purely fictional (and also German) universe, and can therefore be read as a “reminder” of this otherness.

We... more Self-control plays an important role in healthy development and has been shown to be amenable to intervention. We present a theoretical framework for the emerging area of “brain- training” interventions that includes both laboratory-based direct training methods and ecologically-valid school, family, and community based interventions. Although these approaches have proliferated in recent years, the evidence based to support them is just beginning to emerge, and conceptual models underlying many of the techniques tend to be underspecified and imprecise. Identifying the neural systems responsible for improvements in self-control may be of tremendous benefit not only for overall intervention efficacy, but also for basic science issues related to underlying shared biological mechanisms of psychopathology. Here, we review the neurodevelopment of self-control and explore its implications for theory, intervention, and prevention. We then present a neurally informed framework for understanding self-control development and change, and discuss how this may inform future intervention strategies for individuals suffering with psychopathology or drug abuse/dependence, as well as implications for young children with delays in cognitive and emotional functioning.

The aim of this paper is to present a typology of Polish imperfective past tense forms in the factual use for the... more The aim of this paper is to present a typology of Polish imperfective past tense forms in the factual use for the purpose of creating a set of guidelines for their translation into French language. Although descriptions of factual imperfective aspect are not new to linguistics, both Polish and international, equivalence of its forms in other languages poses problems to foreigners and native speakers alike. This is especially true in French, where Polish past imperfective forms could be expressed by a number of past tenses. In order to proceed with our task we are going to adopt a classification of Polish imperfective verbal forms based on the following criteria: general factual meaning or specific (concrete) factual meaning as a primary measure and imperfective or perfective intention of the imperfective form as a secondary measure. Such systematization of the phenomenon in Polish will allow us to formulate guidelines of equivalence with French past tenses.

The aim of the paper is comparison of the process of development of cultural anthropology and comparative studies in... more The aim of the paper is comparison of the process of development of cultural anthropology and comparative studies in the perspective of post-war anthropologization of whole humanities and social science. It ought to be emphasized, that this proposition is different from Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek or Michael Riffaterre’s complementarity of comparative literature and cultural studies, cultural theory or cultural critique. Afterward I underline some of the key issues of cultural anthropology, and their application into the comparative literature. Among the others, I analyzed in this article three of them: (1) Practice shows that intercultural communication is possible and effective. In philosophy I would defend the idea of “internal realism” or “pragmatic realism”, or – in different terms – “intentional rationality” (Michał Buchowski). In this approach people act in accordance with the norms, and convictions, beliefs shared in their community (like in Jerzy Kmita’definition of culture). Ergo: all cultures are rational in their own perspective. Based on this issue we could rethink the idea of intercultural translation (borrowed from Stanley Tambiah and supported by Hilary Putnam), and combine those topics with the paradigm central for current comparative literature. (2) Moreover, in this article I presented transformation from Goethe’s idea of ‘Weltliterature’ to David Damrosch’s world literature and the consequences of that process from the perspective of anthropologization of comparative studies. (3) Finally, I combine this approaches with globalization in the gaze of cultural anthropology (especially questions of relativism, multiculturalism, acculturation, intercultural exchange, etc.), and the possible (not only academic but also social) role of comparative literature in (post)modern world.
