Most everyone in the transgender community has heard of the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, or at least of their Standards of Care. Post-ops have gone through them. Pre-ops are in the middle of them. Non-ops have encountered them. Genderqueers know them as a social expectation for their friends. Crossdressers have to listen to pre-ops complain about them.
Opinions vary. Some see them as a necessary evil. Some are glad they exist to protect those non-tranny fools who want an up-close-and-personal garden-shear experience. Some see them as fascist.
“My story is really not mine”: An Interview with Latina Trans Activist Ruby Bracamonte

She arrived in the DC area at the age of 16, a refugee from political violence in El Salvador. She has coordinated local support groups for drag queens and trans women as well as the national Latina Transgender Leadership Summit and advocated with the Metropolitan Police Department and other Washington, DC, agencies for better treatment of trans people. In 2003, she gained national attention speaking out against violence after the murder of her friend, Bella Evangelista. With all of her public speaking and organizing, however, the activism that means the most to Ruby is the personal support she provides to those who are “really marginalized,” even within the trans community, those who are homeless, sex workers, addicts, or HIV positive, who she calls her “daughters.” I interviewed Ruby in Washington, DC, in three sessions, on October 6, 18, and 25, 2004, as part of a larger project collecting oral histories of activists who work at the intersections of race, class, sexuality, disability, and nation.

Heterosexuals' Attitudes Toward Transgender People: Findings from a National Probability Sample of U.S. Adults

Feeling thermometer ratings of transgender people were strongly correlated with attitudes toward gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals, but were significantly less favorable. Attitudes toward transgender people were more negative among heterosexual men than women. Negative attitudes were associated with endorsement of a binary conception of gender; higher levels of psychological authoritarianism, political conservatism, and anti-egalitarianism, and (for women) religiosity; and lack of personal contact with sexual minorities. In regression analysis, sexual prejudice accounted for much of the variance in transgender attitudes, but respondent gender, educational level, authoritarianism, anti-egalitarianism, and (for women) religiosity remained significant predictors with sexual prejudice statistically controlled. Implications and directions for future research on attitudes toward transgender people are discussed.

This article explores discourses on non-heterosexual and gender
non-conforming individuals in contemporary Turkish society. First, I
examine gender and sexual norms established within the Turkish project of
modernization with a special emphasis on the formation of a strict binary
system of interrelated gender and sexual categories. Next, I investigate
different strategies of self-conceptualization employed by those who fall
outside such a system in order to either incorporate or challenge dominant
norms. The discussion is based on empirical data and theoretical contributions
by academics specialized in different fields as well as on the material provided
by Turkish and international human rights organizations.

This article examines shifts in the legal, medical, and common-sense logics governing the designation of sex on birth certificates issued by the City of New York between 1965 and 2006. In the initial iteration, the stabilization of legal sex categories was organized around the notion of “fraud”; in the most recent iteration, “permanence” became the measure of authenticity. We frame these legal constructions of sex with theories about the “natural attitude” toward gender.

Challenging Cases for Experienced Therapists
Katherine Rachlin, Ph.D. Private Practice, New York, New York, USA and Arlene Istar Lev, LCSW-R, CASAC Choices Counseling and Consulting, Albany, New York, and Albany School of Social Welfare, New York, New York, USA
The authors, both experienced gender therapists, engage in an interactive discussion of two cases that involve ethical dilemmas and complex psychological presentations. Three themes are discussed: (1) writing letters of recommendation for hormonal or surgical treatment when the clinical presentation involves complicating factors, (2) providing support for transgender persons who are not expressing their authentic gender and choose to remain closeted, and (3) the flexible use of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health’s (WPATH’s) Standards of Care. The authors each present a case and then discuss various strategies that are affirming of transgender identities.
