Technological innovations are important with regard to increasing export performance. However, the results that had... more Technological innovations are important with regard to increasing export performance. However, the results that had been reached in the empirical literature investigating the effects of R&D expenses which is accepted as input of technological innovation on the export performance are not compatible with each other. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the discussion in the literature. Between years 1995–2005, a panel data analysis was used to test the relationship between Turkish manufacturing industries’ exports, and the R&D expenses. It was found that the effect of the R&D expenses on export performance was substantially lagged.

Softwood sawmilling is important to the economy of many nations and huge volumes of softwood lumber are produced... more Softwood sawmilling is important to the economy of many nations and huge volumes of softwood lumber are produced annually. Accordingly, the economic success of softwood sawmills, as they compete with substitutes such as steel and concrete, is of interest to various industry stakeholders, especially managers, and researchers. Given the strong connection between innovativeness and firm performance in the literature, this study investigates innovativeness in sawmills in Australia, Canada, Chile, Norway, and the USA.

Mail surveys were used in each of the countries to collect data regarding product, process, and business systems innovativeness and firm performance. Findings suggest that sawmills focus equally on product and process innovativeness, firm size positively impacts innovativeness, and that overall, process innovativeness is what drives firm performance in this sector. Findings suggest that managers should focus on being innovative since this positively impacts firm performance.

This paper provides an evaluation of the literature pertaining to the autopoietic, connectionist, and cognitivist... more This paper provides an evaluation of the literature pertaining to the autopoietic, connectionist, and cognitivist epistemological paradigms. These paradigms exist at the individual and organisational level through diametrically opposed functionalist versus interpretive and integrative socio-technical knowledge management perspectives. The alignments of individual and organisational epistemologies are essential to the effectiveness of a knowledge management system. Knowl-edge management should consider the roots of knowledge theoretically in order to share or man-age knowledge dissemination successfully in organisations. The term ‘knowledge sharing’ has been emphasised and discussed comprehensively through its epistemological influential factors. This paper concludes the development of a Knowledge Management Epistemological Synthesis Model (KM-ES Model) and a comprehensive discussion and conclusion section focussing on the implications of epistemological influences on the knowledge management system of an organisa-tion. The results from this study provide both researchers and academicians with a clear under-standing of the interplay between epistemologies and a foundation for establishing an effective organisational knowledge management system.

This research discusses the SECI Model of Knowledge Conversion as it relates to the 10 Central and Eastern European... more This research discusses the SECI Model of Knowledge Conversion as it relates to the 10 Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) that are now part of the European Union (EU). The socio-economic conversion from socialism to capitalism of these societies is unique in historical precedence, whereby utilising the contextual models in knowledge conversion are applicable for understanding the implications of such a phenomenon. The results indicate that there is a unique set of variables that need to be considered within this context and for future similar situations.

As the EU expands eastward, it absorbs millions of highly skilled knowledge workers and opens opportunities for western European organisations to capitalise on this workforce. The migration of these skilled workers is a macro-exercise in eastern European knowledge management, and could have far-reaching implications at the regional, industry and organisational levels. This paper explores the context and implications of knowledge worker movement across fading borders.

This work critically re-examines the claims of governments and the information and communications technology (ICT)... more This work critically re-examines the claims of governments and the information and communications technology (ICT) industry to foster more sustainable economies based on high technology in an era of climate change, resource depletion, and pollution. It argues that these claims are embedded in the orthodoxy of ecological modernizers (EM), and that a critical political ecology approach can more effectively re-embed information technology innovation in its material social, economic and political context. Using a ‘three-order effects’ measure, it surveys the environmental effects of ICT from manufacturing to widespread implementation. It focuses on the raw materials used, energy use, displacement effects, carbon emissions effects, chemical pollution, water pollution, and other social and environmental effects. It concludes that the ‘new economy’ is not all ‘new’, but rather is highly dependent on the polluting and destructive ‘old economy’, with significant and growing environmental consequences that are not currently given sufficient attention in public policy decision making.

The complementary assets, besides the core clinical and medical protocols, are required for performing technological innovations in large-scale service operations. The paper ends with a evaluation of two frameworks used by telecom providers during the technological convergence wave of the 1990s. An analysis comparing the Telecommunications Convergence phenomenon of those days and current Telehealth context can provide insights for developing a more consistent Telehealth operational framework.
