Review (and my samokritika): N. Pianciola, "Stalinismo di frontiera" [Frontier Stalinism. Agricultural colonisation, extermination of the nomads, and State-building in Central Asia (1905-1936)], Roma 2009
This is a much longer version of the review I wrote for Central Eurasian Reader.
I post it online for two reasons: first, because I think this is an important book that deserves to be known beyond the small circle of those who read Italian; second, because in my review for Central Eurasian Reader I misunderstood a passage (p. 486 top). The author pointed this out, and this is my way to do a thorough samokritika.
The History of an Unfinished Project: The Dictionary “Russian Botanists” by Sergey Yu. Lipshits

Lipshits was a unique bibliographic project; it remains an essential guidebook for historians of biology in Russia. It contains biographical and full bibliographical entries for all botanists and other scholars engaged in botanical research in Russia in the 18th – mid-20th centuries. What makes the dictionary an invaluable resource for the history of botany (both social history and history of ideas) is the fact that it contains data not only on the leading scientists but on minor figures as well, even if the entries provide only a brief biographical account and a short outline of academic activities. However, only the first four volumes of the dictionary (up to the letter K) came out of print, and a few copies of the proofs for the fifth volume (the letters L-M) have been preserved. In this paper author made an attempt to describe on the basis of archival and published materials the sequence of the work progress, the difficulties that encountered S.Yu. Lipchitz and MOIP in process of publication, and how the publication was stopped by Department for Agitation and Propaganda of TsK VKP(b).

Defying De-Stalinization: Albania’s 1956

Rejecting de-Stalinization, the Albanian Communist leader Enver Hoxha was able to vindicate his position against Yugoslavia's brand of socialism abroad, fortify his rule at home, and claim more aid from Moscow, Beijing, and the Soviet bloc. This article discusses the Tirana Party Conference of April 1956, treating the Albanian Party of Labor (the Communist party) as an “information society.” The article assesses deliberations over security and ideology at the highest levels and demonstrates how tiny Albania came to embody, in exaggerated form, both the promises and the perils of socialist exchange, in addition to mirroring the profound inconsistencies of Khrushchev's de-Stalinization campaign.
