Bale & Maguire, 1994; Bale & Sang, 1996; Maguire, 1994; 1999). These studies clearly demonstrate that there is a global sports market and economy that is dominated by major events such as Olympic Games, the World Cups of soccer, rugby and cricket, the IAAF World Championships and by major national leagues in leading sports. These events draw competitors and tourists from all over the world and pit cities and nations against each other in bidding processes to host events that are broadcast to global audiences (Macintosh & Whitson, 1993). What these studies do not do is explore the nexus between sporting hallmark events and representations of local cultures in touristic presentations to the international community. This paper seeks to examine the links between tourism, sport and representation through a case study of South Africa in the 1990s.

For this to be accomplished, the user centred factors of both information types must be understood in detail. Through a series of focus groups, the differences between volunteer and professional information sources are investigated relative to the characteristics which are the most, or least relevant to the end-user. These findings have implications for how different forms of information may be most effectively utilised within different usage situations.

The purpose of this study is to examine attitudes of the residents of Barbados to the development of Bed & Breakfast (B&B) accommodation in their communities as part of the preparation for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 hosted by the West Indies. This study measures community response to the B&B initiative developed by the government of Barbados by exploring differences in attitudes towards the initiative. A sample of 322 residents was successfully interviewed over the telephone and participants reported moderately positive attitudes towards the B&B initiative. Frequency of contact with tourists, awareness of the initiative and employment in the tourism sector were significantly related to positive perceptions of the initiative. Moreover, persons who perceived obstacles in the development of this initiative expressed less favourable attitudes towards the B&B initiative. Social exchange and contact theories offered some explanation for
these findings and directions for future research.

This study measures community response and attitudes to the Home Accommodation Programme (HAP) developed by
the Barbados government as part of the preparation for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 hosted by the West Indies. This is
done by exploring differences in community attitudes toward the initiative. A structured questionnaire containing
twenty-seven questions was used for this study in which 322 residents were successfully interviewed by telephone. Using
a systematic sampling procedure a telephone directory was used from which every tenth person was selected from each
parish. The telephone survey method was adopted due to its efficiency and ability to access participants who were
geographically scattered over the Island. Participants reported moderately positive attitudes toward the HAP. Frequency
of contact with tourists, awareness of the initiative and employment in the tourism sector were significantly related to
positive perceptions of the programme. Persons who perceived obstacles in the development of the programme
expressed less favourable attitudes towards the HAP. Social exchange and contact theories offered some explanation for
these findings and directions for future research.

The division between work and leisure has long been a point of
significant discussion in a variety of academic disciplines. This paper analyses the relationship between work and leisure for rafting guides, linking these topics with an overarching concept of lifestyle. This paper is based on six weeks of fieldwork conducted in Queenstown, New Zealand, where the researcher had in-depth contact with 26 rafting guides, following their workdays and leisure activities and using informal conversations and participant observation as methods
of data collection. The results of this study contribute to our understanding of how rafting guides combine leisure, work, responsibilities, friendship and hierarchy in an environment where, usually, their inner personality is reflected. While focused on rafting guides, the results of this paper have implications for understanding the complexity of the wider relationship between work, leisure, and individual lifestyle, beyond the classic dichotomy between work and leisure.

This article wants to analyze the relationship between the phenomenon of the equestrian sport and its tourist impacts on a cultural and an anthropological context. Considering an equestrian sport approach we will try to define its different definitions and descriptions. If we look at the equestrian sport from a tourist perspective we can rapidly understand the importance of an historical, a cultural, a social representation and an identity perspective.
The rider looks for leisure, in opposition to the tourist that, himself may be a rider or by any means someone linked to the horse world. These tourists look at the equestrian activities with a double interest as they can operate as spectators, as well as active participants and hence the general importance of the distinction of horse tourism and horse riding tourism.
This circumstance requires a planned and a sustainable selection of the destinations, events, itineraries its protagonists as well as the promotion and the advertising material. For this reason the equestrian tourism is considered an associated branch of the cultural, sport, urban, rural, MICE and the traditional tourism.
In order to understand the main issues related to the offer and the demand, further studies were developed on a heritage, an historical, a traditional and an anthropological context.
Furthermore a practical study was made. Its main goal was to understand the motivations of the participants of the equestrian activities regarding the importance of the heuristic principal of the decision making process on the available options in equestrian tourism. Our main concern was to establish that the equestrian tourism carry’s nowadays a significant importance on different regions in Portugal, which for that matter emerges from diverse traditions related to man and his horse through out our history.
Finally and from a general perspective we were interested on the anthropological and the ethnographic phenomenon brought by the horse riding as an expression of a cultural selfness of various sectors of the Portuguese population.
Key words: Equestrian tourism; horse tradition; leisure; Portugal; horse riding
