Seen by:Soldering Toward Media Democracy: Technical Practice as Symbolic Value in Radio Activism
Journal of Communication Inquiry, 2012

In practice, this largely played out as a systematic elevation of “technical” work and downplaying of policy/advocacy expertise, even though both were salient features of their work. The article argues that radio activists cultivated a technical identity that served to mark boundaries between their group and others in the terrain of media democracy work. Technical identity also took on special significance as the group grappled with organizational maturation, mitigating the anxiety felt by workers as they experienced the shift from an inexperienced, though highly driven and successful activist collective, to a more sustainable nonprofit activist organization. The article concludes by naming technological activism as one strategy in the wider spectrum of work to promote media democracy and speculates on the consequences of technical identity within the wider movement.

Recent examples range from opposing public policies, such as government funding cuts, to organizing revolutionary social movements, such as those in the Middle East and North Africa. Although online spaces create remarkable opportunities for various forms of political action, there are concerns over the power of existing institutions to control and even censor such interaction spaces. The objective of this article is to draw together different insights on the online engagement phenomenon, highlighting both its potential and limitations as a mechanism for fostering democratic debate and influencing policy making. We examine recent examples from Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. Finally, we summarize the implications of our work and outline directions for further research.

During the late 1980s and 1990s there has been an international acceleration in the rationalisation and relocation of professional sporting teams and competitions. While this process has had a long history in the United States, it has occurred much more rapidly in other societies. In Australia, there has been a dual process of national expansion of professional sporting competitions and pressures placed on historic suburban-based clubs. In addition, there has been a massive infusion of international capital in the form of television interest in Australian professional sports. In rugby league this caused a temporary split in the national competition. In rugby union it has led to open professionalism and greater integration with South Africa and New Zealand. And, in Australian Rules football, the governing
body has worked to protect itself against an outside takeover such as has plagued rugby league. At the same time, both the Australian Football League (AFL) and the National Rugby League (NRL) and their predeessors have worked to rationalise the number of suburban Melbourne and Sydney-based clubs respectively while promoting a policy of national expansion and for rugby league even international expansion to Auckland, New Zealand. We examine fan responses to these changes
particularly when their club is threatened with merging with other clubs, We discuss the dynamics of this process that are unique to the Australian context in our analysis of global capital and local audiences and suggest how this connects with a theoretical understanding of such processes more generally and comparisons that can be made between Australia and other countries.
Horizontal Democracy Now: From Alterglobalization to Occupation

Specifically, this article examines two meeting structures embodied in the occupied square in Barcelona to explore the mechanisms through which decision making within the 15 May movement foster diversity and embrace conflict. Based on a decade of involvement in the alterglobalization movement, attendance at meetings in the acampada in Barcelona at the height of the 15 May uprising, as well as follow up interviews and discussions with long-time activists in Barcelona, this article shows how the decision making practices used in the squares in Barcelona mimic, build on and expand on horizontal decision-making methods practiced within the alterglobalization movement. Some of the dilemmas created by the grounding of horizontal decision- making within local squares and the much larger scale of these meetings are explored.

počátku normalizace až do pádu komunismu v kontrastu s polistopadovou érou až do současnosti.
