La grammaire fonctionnelle-discursive : stratification et interfaces
Co-authored with Kees Hengeveld; translated by myself.

Rock Band: a case study in the design of embodied interface experience

With the rise in popularity of games like Guitar Hero and consoles such as Nintendo's Wii comes new opportunities for game design at the interface level. In this paper we propose three interrelated dimensions for the analysis of embodied and gestural game interface hardware devices. We demonstrate how gestural and embodied interactions can be understood as ludic, kinesthetic and narrative experiences. We ground this discussion in a close analysis of the interface affordances of the game Rock Band and demonstrate how these three dimensions allow us to understand more clearly the place of the interface in the design and the experience of games.

After a very brief introduction to the topic, we deal with two main problems: the underlying Relational Semantic Structure (Mateu, 2000, 2002, 2008) and its relevance to syntax, and the "narrow syntax" of raising. In the end, we propose a radically minimalist theory of raising in which we claim that we only have one clause with a Split TP instead of what has been traditionaly proposed, the presence of two clauses and an extraction from a subordinate TP or phi-domain (Chomsky, 1999, Hornstein, 2003, Grohmann, 2003, 2004), that is, we claim that there is no raising at all: "raising verbs" are in fact Modality expressions. Comments will be welcome.

The aim of the paper is to provide (neuro)biological basis for some of the taken-for-granted notions in modern generative linguistic theory, such as Merge, Tranfer and Phases. We will try to outline a general model of the mind-brain, describing and explaining the semantics-syntax-semantics interfaces, following the model outlined in Krivochen (2010a, b, c). Our framework will be not only the Minimalist Program but also Relevance Theory wthin a Massively Modular mind-brain. We would like to thank Juan Stamboni and Angel Gallego for discussing with us some of the notions presented in this paper. Comments will be welcome.
(2010c) Theta Theory Revisited
I am grateful to Angel Gallego and Juan Stamboni for their valuble comments on earlier versions. Needless to say, all remaining errors are entirely my own.

In our road to "Radical Minimalism" (Krivochen, 2011a, b), we try to dispense with checking / matching theory and the concept of "assignment". Our framework, as usual, will be the MP (as a program, not as a theory) and Relevance Theory.

I am in debt with Manuel Leonetti for his support and valuable comments on earlier drafts. All errors are entirely mine.

We find common points between both theories and work in the syntax-semantics interface. Here, we anticipate some tenets of what would become Radical Minimalism (2011b, c).
