(English version): The devotees of San Benito de Palermo go through the streets carrying an image of the Saint and asking for alms. The questions that concern this paper include: a discussion of this tradition which is both secular and sacred in character; the religious persuasion of those involved; and the distinction between religious rites and the means of sustenance. The objectives of this research include an explanation of the relation between the religious and the secular in this particular persuasion. The methods applied are those of ethnology; analysis is based upon implied meaning. The conclusion is that for some people the intervention of the Saint is welcome and justifies the devotees’ personal need for money. The presence invoked by the idol, the touching of the figure, or dancing before it, is a periodical ritual and the service of the devotees offers a good opportunity to make a participatory donation.

Specifically, I focus on Hindu congregational forms, a phenomenon noted in social scientific literature. Drawing on existing theories from the sociology of religion, this article illuminates possible social sources of Hindu congregational forms. Two preliminary sources are proposed and possible mechanisms elaborated: (1) modernization and (2) social networks. I conclude by proposing several new directions for research on Hindu congregational forms. These arguments and proposals offer directions for expanding understanding of how theories in the sociology of religion might operate beyond Christianity and the West.

Founding fathers of sociology Karl Marx (1969, pp.303-304; 1990, pp.63-64), Emile Durkheim (1965, pp.75-476)... more
Founding fathers of sociology Karl Marx (1969, pp.303-304; 1990, pp.63-64), Emile Durkheim (1965, pp.75-476) and Max Weber (1974, pp.181-182) shared the view that traditional religion was becoming more and more trivial to the modern world. They all agreed that secularization was an inevitable process (Giddens, 1993, p. 477). For more than one and a half century, the following generations of sociologists did not question this modernist view either. They viewed this process as an inevitable and straight path in all of the modernizing societies. However, from the early 1970s and onwards, the modernist tradition, positivist sociology, and above all the ‘grand narrative’ of modernity was put under an increasing intellectual scrutiny. This new approach has led to a great diversification in secularization theories. What had started as a ‘positivist certainty’ and an indispensable feature of modernization, rationalization and urbanization, came to be defined as a social myth. First of all, in order to examine the existing theories of secularization, this paper aims to make an analytical literature review. Secondly, existing theories of secularization will be compared. Third, this paper aims to provide a broader understanding and objective approach to the discussions on secularization in general.
Key Words: secularization theories, modernity, rationalization, positivist sociology, social myth.
Laïcité Revisited: Sarkozy’s Break From Fifth Republic Precedent

After analyzing the concept of laïcité, from its origins in the French revolution to its present-day ramifications, and giving background on the Fifth Republic system in France, I then argue that Sarkozy has broken from the precedent set by his predecessors in the Fifth Republic on the topic of laïcité. I do so by discussing the records of each of his predecessors on the issue and then contrasting it with the "laïcité positif"advocated by Sarkozy. I conclude by offering an explain for Sarkozy's unconventional approach to this issue, tying it in to the larger political and religious debates occurring in France.

This paper will discuss the transformations that have taken place in the last 15 years and analyse not just the growth of Islam, but other faiths as well. One of the most relevant changes has been the steady increase in the number of places of worship for non-Catholic religious minorities. This increase is a result of the appearance of new religions, and the expansion of pre-existing religions. These changes include the incorporation of new languages and traditions, the provision of new services to meet the specific needs of immigrant populations and, finally, the internal transformation of the communities’ doctrinal profiles.

The concept of secularism can be defined in a legal or in a political perspective.
In a political perspective, this concept leads to a particular relationship between the two communities, the State and the Church. This report can be regulated by agreements, if the two authorities recognize each other and limit areas of their sovereignty, and if it is recognized (in principle) that a person can belong to both groups. In a legal perspective the problem of secularism refers to the content of legislative choices, in a multicultural and pluralistic society. In this sense, the concept of secularism is often reduced to that of neutrality, but incorrectly. More convincing is the possibility of interpreting the concept of secularism as objectivity, in a perspective that is neither relativistic nor ideological.
