British and US officials utilised their links with multinational oil companies in an attempt to steer negotiations and safeguard their, wartime and post-war, access to Venezuelan oil. Events in Venezuela saw the inception of a US foreign oil policy that reflected New Deal ideals and took inspiration from British oil diplomacy. However, the issue created conflict within the Anglo-US wartime alliance as events became imbued with wider tensions concerning Latin America and the international oil industry.

To this day, the so-called “Bloody Sunday at Bromberg” (3./4.9.1939) and its consequences are among the most contentious subjects in the history of the Second World War. Despite extensive efforts by German and Polish researchers it has not been possible to clear up the events at the time. In view of the lack of central sources on the German side this is probably no longer possible. In contrast the investigation of the number and names of the Polish victims has advanced noticeably during the last few years. The present article adds to existing Polish material published in 2008/2009 on the basis of unpublished German sources of the Historisch-Landeskundliche Kommission für die Deutschen in Polen [Historical Commission on the Germans in Poland], among them the papers of the former teacher August Müller, kept at the Herder Institute in Marburg. The comparative analysis of the names of the dead exhibits surprising differences, while the estimate of the overall number of casualties (over 400) is astonishingly similar both on the German and Polish side. In any case, final clarification seems impossible on the basis of the sources known to date.

Women’s memories tell different stories about Terezín ghetto than men: but which, and what are the mechanisms behind it?
In the center of my research stands the adaptation and coping mechanisms of women in Terezín: How did their everyday life look like? Which roles did they take in? I analyze the gender specific aspects of Czech Jewish women’s lives in Terezín; moreover, I focus on how does it influence their narratives as we know them today. The core of my researched is based on a sample of thirty biographic interviews from the 1990s, combined with various contemporaneous sources. Having experienced the deportation chiefly in their twenties, they represent middle-class, assimilated, emancipated, mostly Czech speaking women.
The young Czech women inmates usually abandoned their pre-deportation individual course of life as a modern, independent woman and shifted towards a strongly gendered, supportive role, focusing on the family and collective. I examine the relationship between the shift in the social role of women, formation of networks and groups and their survival chances. Thus analyzing the position of women in particular and gender in general helps us recognize the power relationships within the enforced community.

The Decline of Pan-Indian Identity and the Development of Tamil Cultural Separatism in Singapore, 1856-1965

It will analyse some of the reasons why a Tamil cultural separatism came to dominate negotiations of ethnic identity in early post-war Singapore. This will include an examination of colonial ethnographic representations, the effects of demographic trends in Indian migration to Malaya during the colonial period, transnational political linkages between Singapore and India, and the effects of the Japanese occupation on Indian identity during World War II. The paper will also focus on the growth of the Tamil reform movement and the ways in which it came to shape the framing of Tamil ethnic identity in Singapore.

Chapter synopsis: 'On Erich Fromm: Why he left the Frankfurt School':
-Biography: Erich Fromm
-Erich Fromm was very critical of Freudian psychoanalysis. The Frankfurt School disapproved of that.
-Tension arose between Fromm and Horkheimer/Adorno/Marcuse and other pro-Freudian contemporaries
-Erich Fromm had reservations about the Frankfurt School's desire to merge psychoanalysis with Marxist theory
-Controversy arose over the Frankfurt School's decision not to publish a manuscript that Fromm wrote, with Weiss. This was a report of their landmark authoritarian personality study of 1931. The topic and methodology shaped the Frankfurt School's later research into authoritarianism (e.g. Adorno et al.'s famous studies).
This chapter also discusses Erich Fromm's work post-Frankfurt School:
--Fromm on social neurosis
--Fromm on thoughts as a form of self-presentation or impression management
--Fromm's theoretical focus on self identity, rather than instincts
--Fromm's theory about personality traits
--Fromm on empiricism and psychology versus psychoanalysis
