Towards a digital model to edit the different paratextuality levels within a textual tradition

In the textual tradition of a literary work, our sources (manuscripts, printed books etc.) commonly bear, together... more In the textual tradition of a literary work, our sources (manuscripts, printed books etc.) commonly bear, together with the "main text", different kinds of "paratexts" commenting on it (including interlinear annotations, glosses, scholia, footnotes, modern scholarly introductions and commentaries, and many others). This article proposes a unified model for a document-based digital critical edition including both the main texts and the paratexts as they appear in different single sources. The problematic aspects of such an "enlarged" digital edition are discussed, including the relations between the different paratexts and the main text they refer to within each single textual source, as well as the "alignment" of different main texts and paratexts in different sources.

The Slavonic version of St. John Chrysostom’s homily De sancto hieromartyre Phoca (BHG 1537, CPG 4364) emerged in the beginning of the 10th c. in Bulgaria and came to us in the longer redaction of the Zlatostruy (Chrysorrhoas) collection. The present study is devoted to a comparison of the witnesses, building a stemma codicum and identifying the characteristics of the Slavonic archetype. Attached, an edition of the Slavonic version (according to seven copies) and parallel Greek text is being included.
Славянская версия слова Иоанна Златоуста De sancto hieromartyre Phoca (BHG 1537, CPG 4364) возникла в нач. Х в. и дошла до нас в составе полной редакции сборника Златоструй. Настоящее исследование включает в себя текстологическое сопоставление свидетелях, создание stemma codicum и выявление характеристик славянского архетипа. Анализ сопровождается публикацией славянской версии по семи копий с параллельным греческим текстом.

The Apocryphal Apocalypse of John the Theologian is an eschatological work which emerged on Greek soil in the 5th-6th century and had a strong influence on both literary traditions – initially on the Byzantine and, later and in particular, on the Slavonic tradition in which it became especially popular.
The language of the Slavonic witnesses of the text indicates that the apocryphon was probably translated in Bulgaria in the 10th century. This thesis is supported by the numerous archaic syntactic, morphological and lexical features. The quotes from the Bible in the Apocryphal Apocalypse are identical with the earliest Slavonic translation of liturgical texts.
A comparison of ten Slavonic copies of the Apocryphal Apocalypse, which reflect the presence of this work in the Bulgarian, Serbian, Russian and Ukrainian manuscript traditions, suggests that there was a single Slavonic translation. The Slavonic copies are relatively consistent in conveying the content of the apocryphon, which is almost fully preserved in the copies under consideration.
The Apocryphal Apocalypse has a specific internal structure, which synthesizes features typical of two mediaeval literary genres – Apocalypse and erotapocriseis. This dual model, the theme and unclear (apocryphal or canonical) status of the text, were prerequisites for its dissemination in different types of miscellanies and for the establishment of intertextual relations with literary works that differ by genre, theme and status.
The Apocryphal Apocalypse did not only become very popular in the Middle Ages, but also served as a productive model, inspiring formulas, motifs, themes and ideas in a series of other works. It became a basic text in apocryphal and eschatological literature in the Orthodox world.
This publication includes a summary of the results of a comparative study of the apocryphon in the Byzantine and Slavonic manuscript traditions, and a critical edition of the Old Bulgarian translation. The chosen main manuscript is the text of Grech. 70 in the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg, part of Manuscript No. 34 from the St. Ekaterina Monastery on Mt. Sinai (12th-13th century), supplemented with readings based on another nine Slavonic copies. The Greek text of the Apocryphal Apocalypse from the edition of K. Tischendorf is also included.

The result was a personal testimonial which is a singular specimen of historical writing in German speaking areas during this period, owing to its size, the diverse range of its contents and the specific circumstances of its origin. Over the last years, an interdisciplinary team at the University of Vienna comprising historians and a philologist have worked on making this comprehensive source accessible to the scientific community.
