The “Christian” Assumptions of Secular Hermeneutics

This article demystifies the highly theologised debate between monism and pluralism within the discipline of hermeneutics, and criticises the way that this theology has been done. From a Christian perspective that is free from cumbersome theological categories, a simple, authentic interpersonal ethic is the most appropriate way to approach texts. The implications for scholarly praxis are explored with specific reference to John C. Mellon’s ‘recovery hermeneutic’ reading of Mark’s gospel.

The aim of this paper is to present the steps of Gadamer´s reform of Dilthey's hermeneutic (developed under the modern concept of life experience, which was taken to be the grounding/basis of historical self-conscience) and to expose the new concepts of reason and human existence within Gadamer's theory, when he introduced the concept of finitude to the concept of human life experience.

Hector and Christine Helmer) and an existentialmystical understanding (Thandeka). Using the phenomenological category of ‘existential feelings’ drawn from the work of Matthew Ratcliffe, I argue that they can be brought into a coherent overall account that recognizes different aspects of feeling in Schleiermacher’s work. I also suggest that such an interpretation of Schleiermacher’s concept of religious feeling offers a different and better understanding of the role of feelings in religious experience and belief than the contemporary ‘perception-model’ of religious experience.

It is therefore to be expected that his treatment of Christology in The Christian Faith pays particular attention to this problem too. This is significant not least because historically Christology has been central for theological reformulations and modifications of philosophical notions of individuality. The main part of the paper is therefore an attempt to unpack the central concepts operative in those complex and dense paragraphs of Schleiermacher's dogmatic opus magnum insofar as they bear specifically on the relationship between Christ's universal (archetypal) and his individual humanity. It becomes clear that Christ for Schleiermacher is the exemplar of humanity precisely by being uniquely individual. This shows at the same time, that the latter is by no means opposed to integration into community, but implies and requires it.

Understanding Misreading: A Hermeneutic-Deconstructive Approach

Schleiermacher's conception of the hermeneutic circle provides an adequate bridge between literary criticism and speech production, once we attend to the possible developments of the theory of the hermeneutic circle understanding it as both a temporal process, and an interactional one. This paper, therefore, presents for the purpose of comparison several critical conceptions originating in different schools and dealing with a range of objects of study in criticism. The comparison yields a common element whose outline becomes gradually visible as we proceed, as each of these conceptions (hermeneutics, deconstruction, modernist aesthetics, pragmalinguistics...) brings out aspects which are implicit in the others. This exercise might be compared to the drawing of lines between stars to form a constellation, allowing us to see a previously invisible figure. The lines in constellations may seem too insubstantial as a term of comparison, but the paper will go some length towards the deconstruction of the clear-cut opposition between what is substantial and what is constructed by the imagination, at least as far as the field of interpretive theory is concerned. The thread connecting the critical approaches examined here is the retrsopective rereading of a narrative and its hermeneutic consequences. These consequences might be summarized by saying that the passing of time alters everything, even the past itself, once so safely stored.

I respond to standard criticisms of Friedrich Schleiermacher made by Karl Barth and Hans-Georg Gadamer by clarifying his understanding of language, interpretation, and religious feeling. Schleiermacher’s “indicative hermeneutics” is developed in the context of the ethical significance of communication and the ineffable. The notion of trace is employed in order to interpret the paradox of speaking about that which cannot be spoken. The trace is not a brute singularity but bears a fundamental relationship to the word—and ultimately the word of God—for Schleiermacher.

Heritage and Hermeneutics: Towards a Broader Interpretation of Interpretation

This article re-examines the theoretical basis for environmental and heritage interpretation in tourist settings in the light of hermeneutic philosophy. It notes that the pioneering vision of heritage interpretation formulated by Freeman Tilden envisaged a broadly educational, ethically informed and transformative art. By contrast, current cognitive psychological attempts to reduce interpretation to the monological transmission of information, targeting universal but individuated cognitive structures, are found to be wanting. Despite growing signs of diversity, this information processing approach to interpretation remains dominant. The article then presents the alternative paradigm of hermeneutics through the works of Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Heidegger and Gadamer, to provide a broader interpretation of interpretation. This not only captures the essence of Tilden's definition but construes heritage interpretation as a more inclusive, culturally situated, critically reflexive and dialogical practice.
