Le philhellénisme d’inspiration conservatrice en Europe et en Russie (Conservative Philhellenism in Europe and in Russia)

S’il est un point sur lequel les chercheurs sont généralement d’accord, c’est que le philhellénisme, qui prit dans les... more S’il est un point sur lequel les chercheurs sont généralement d’accord, c’est que le philhellénisme, qui prit dans les années 1820 la forme d’un vaste courant de sympathie à la cause de libération grecque, fut l’une des premières manifestations de l’opinion publique à une échelle véritablement européenne. Ce n’est que tout récemment que des questions ont surgi quant à l’ampleur réelle du phénomène et quant à son impact effectif sur le cours des événements politico-militaires. L’existence, longtemps méconnue en Occident, d’un philhellénisme oriental à la fois russe et balkanique, vient compliquer l’image d’un mouvement beaucoup plus complexe et moins unilatéral qu’on ne l’a longtemps cru, où se mêlent aspects culturels et politiques, préoccupations humanitaires et visées économiques.

L’insurrection grecque de 1821 suscita naturellement l’enthousiasme des milieux libéraux européens, encore opprimés par la politique réactionnaire de la Sainte-Alliance. Ce lien entre le philhellénisme et le libéralisme fut accrédité presque unanimement par l’historiographie européenne, et cela jusqu’à nos jours. A l’encontre de cet avis largement répandu, notre contribution vise à montrer qu’il a existé également un philhellénisme conservateur qui s’est manifesté dans des cercles légitimistes occidentaux, russes ou balkaniques de l’époque. Des penseurs comme Alexandre Stourdza, bras droit du comte Capodistrias, ont tenté de concilier leurs sympathies philhellènes avec des positions favorables à la Sainte-Alliance.

Basée sur de multiples documents inédits tirés des archives russes et ukrainiennes, cette analyse interprète le philhellénisme dans le contexte de l’Europe de la Restauration. Elle s’attache également à en faire ressortir les composantes politiques, diplomatiques et religieuses.

Implicit and explicit attitudes toward Muslims among Orthodox undergraduates at Perm State University have been... more Implicit and explicit attitudes toward Muslims among Orthodox undergraduates at Perm State University have been investigated. Implicit attitudes were measured by Implicit Associa-tion Test, whereas explicit attitudes were measured using the “evaluation” subscale of semantic differential. Implicit and explicit attitudes did not correlate between each other. While explicit attitudes did not differ significantly from neutral, implicit attitudes were negative regarding Muslims. At the behavioral level, contrary to explicit attitudes, implicit ones predicted recommended budget cuts for Muslims and Orthodox Church in directions concordant with hypotheses. Finally, implicit attitudes were inverted-U-related with right-wing authoritarianism: implicit attitudes toward Muslims were positive when right-wing authoritarianism was either high or low, whereas middle degree authoritarians demonstrated negative implicit attitudes toward Muslims. The results are discussed and compared with those studies published earlier.

This article surveys nation-building efforts in post-Soviet Russia. There have been five main nation-building projects... more This article surveys nation-building efforts in post-Soviet Russia. There have been five main nation-building projects reflecting the dominant ways of imagining the ‘true’ Russian nation but each has been fraught with contradictions and therefore have been unable to easily guide state policies. At the same time, a solution to the Russian nation-building dilemma may be emerging. This solution does not resolve the contradictions associated with each of the nation-building agendas but instead legalises the ambiguous definition of the nation's boundaries in the 1999 law on compatriots and the 2010 amendments to it. The fuzzy definition of compatriots in the law allows Russia to pursue a variety of objectives and to target a variety of groups without solving the contradictions of existing nation-building discourses.

In this paper, I would like to suggest an additional perspective on the formation of the Russian national identity -... more In this paper, I would like to suggest an additional perspective on the formation of the Russian national identity - Russia's relations with its Muslims. We will see how the lack of functioning democratic institutions, in both the periods, affects the formation of the popular national identities, which eventually force themselves upon the system.
Over the last decade it has gained in significance, and as I will demonstrate, is becoming acute for the construction of Russia's post-Soviet national identity and its nation-building process. According to my assessment, in recent years we are witnessing a grass-root estrangement of Muslims of the Caucasian and Central Asian origin by the Russian society. At the same time, Muslim peoples who originated in Russia's heartland remain a part of the national collective. This, in my opinion, drops a hint on the beginning of the nation consolidation process based on culture rather than ethnic or religious affiliation.
