It informs of the first results of the archaeological excavation on a plot of 1,100 m2 of Montealegre de Campos (Valladolid) relating to periods of Iron II (vacceo), roman, medieval and modern. Notable findings pertaining to urban vacceo with the excavation of nine houses located on both sides of two parallel streets, and belong to the last phase of pre-Roman native settlement.

The archaeological survey, carried out by the Superintendence of Catania in 2007, has unearthed a Roman farm, characterized by multiple life stages (3rd-7th centuries AD), in the area of a previous Hellenistic settlement (4th-2nd centuries BC). A basilica with three aisles and a narthex was built, in late-Byzantine ages (8th-first half of 9th century AD), partially destroying the farm’s remains and those one of a later frequentation of the area (8th century AD). The basilica was modified several times, then transformed into an amorphous deposit of stones. The plan (21.90 m E/W x 16.60 m N/S) is framed in a 5x4 squares arithmetic form that includes the narthex and the apse, with a 2:1 ratio for the width of the nave from the aisles, and a metric base dimensioned according to a foot of m. 0.2964, with a base module of m. 4.15 corresponding to 14 ft. This plant is similar to Sicilian religious buildings traditionally dated between 5th and 6th century AD. and thus proves to be anchored to the building tradition of Late Antiquity. The centrality of the settlement (not far from the Roman aqueduct that crossed this area and beside a long-distance road network in use from Roman to Late Middle ages) explains the continuity of life of a settlement which was clearly the junction of this area.

A segment of the Upper Rhine River presenting both anastomosed and braided was investigated. This area gives us the opportunity to study settlement dynamics during two key periods of the Holocene. The Roman Period characterised by a first major anthropogenic impact on the environment and poorly documented climatic changes. The Little Ice Age, when human settlement and climate may be well documented with high reliability.
A wide methodological approach has been completed to combine results from geomorphology, stratigraphy, geophysics, G.I.S., palynology, dendrochronology and archaeology. This dataset shows:
1/ documentary flood frequency variations of the Rhine River during the last 800 years. These chronological variations show some dissimilarity with other French rivers reconstructed documentary flood series. That attests a primary control of catchment’s characteristics and regime type on long term hydrological dynamics.
2/ changes in the Rhine River and floodplain dynamics during Little Ice Age before major anthropogenic river management of 19th century. Planform changes, riverine forest, land use evolution, and anthropological settlement processes are described and quantified. These results allow the identification of major stratigraphic agent factors role responsible of these changes.
3/ the alluvial landscape character where the Oedenburg site settled, together with the evolution of the riverine forest influenced by the Rhine River hydrodynamics.
4/ settlement dynamics during Antiquity. Four major settlement phases have been evidenced by spatial distribution analysis of roman coins found by pedestrian prospecting during the last twenty years. Settlement dynamics may have been influenced by either historical or environmental impacts.
5/ variations in alluvial dynamics of the Rhine River during Antiquity such as high water table or flooding events.

Excavation of part of a Romano-British roadside settlement on the Fosse Way at Princethorpe, UK. The excavation revealed the remains of an agger associated with the Roman Road, and former road-side ditches. Settlement features included postholes and a small hearth and flue. The stratigraphic evidence suggests that the construction of the road pre-dates the road side settlement.
The pottery evidence suggested that the majority of occupation appeared to date to the late 1st or early 2nd centuries

The dataset consisted of several thousand Roman artefacts found by pedestrian prospecting over the last twenty years, over half of which were coins. This dataset was used together with high-resolution topography and geomagnetic mapping, to reconstruct settlement evolution, both on the terrace and in the floodplain. A comprehensive monetary chart has been compiled for the Oedenburg site, which highlights four major phases of settlement. These results provide a possible causal link connecting historical factors and alluvial events with intra-site evolution. Therefore, while changes observed during Phases I (until AD 68), II (AD 69 to AD 180) and III (AD 180 to AD 295) seem largely related to historical and societal events, Phase IV (AD 295 to AD 402) shows patterns of abandonment of the lower part of the floodplain that may well be related to an unusually humid period in the fourth century. These results are set in a broader context, from the Rhine catchment area to the Alps, and are in agreement with the wet conditions also documented in alluvial, lacustrine, geomorphological and palynological records in Germany (Lahn River, Lake Constance, Lake Nussbaumen, Kaisersthul area and the Black Forest). Studying the intra-site spatial distribution of artefacts with high temporal constraints, at a long-lived site with contrasted topography, opens new avenues for the detection of discreet events such as a higher water table, affecting only the lower zone.

This paper presents a survey of rural settlements in that part of the "calatino" district (near Caltagirone) falling in the north-eastern part of the Erei mountains, for the period between the Roman Empire and the Late Roman age, analyzing the settlement dynamics and the connection of the settlements with the primary and secondary road which extends in some cases up to the Middle Ages.

A medieval cess-pit and a rubbish pit were found, in addition to post-medieval rubbish pits and levelling. Evidence from this site correlates with that from other excavations in Moulsham Street, indicating that the site lay on the edge of the greatest extent of Roman development in the 2nd century AD.
