The built environment interdiscipline: a theoretical model for decision makers in research and teaching

However, because of its vocational orientation it is usually defined in terms of a particular range of professional activities and aptitudes. In consequence the theoretical nature of its academic knowledge base is poorly developed. This has consequences for research and teaching practice within the field. Using established literature on the historical approaches to knowledge categorisation a theoretical model is proposed. This defines the built environment as an applied, but theoretically coherent, interdiscipline with a common epistemological axiomatic. The practical benefits of the model are illustrated by examples in the context of curriculum design, research strategy and the research-teaching nexus.

This paper examines shifts in manufacturing related to globalization. The purpose of the paper is to provide design educators with a better understanding of changes taking place in manufacturing, with the aim of generating discussion around educational responses to these changes in the subject area of design. In the first part of the paper, the broad transformations taking place in manufacturing are outlined, with a focus on concurrent engineering and agile manufacturing.
Next, the ways these changes are affecting the contemporary organization of product development teams are examined. Then, the implications of these shifts for design education are considered. It is argued that changing trends in manufacturing, and related changes in the organization of product development, highlight the importance of equipping design students with skills for working in globally networked organizations. Finally, we overview an educational response to globalization in the subject area of design.
Research informed leadership and Academic Identities in the Post-92 University Sector
a report published for the (LFHE) Leadership Foundation in Higher Education

We interviewed nine senior managers and surveyed eight senior managers, from Heads of Department to Vice-Chancellors. We wanted to find out why senior managers retain their research profile, what challenges they faced in doing so, what the benefits of maintaining research are to academic leadership, and what Univerisities and Human Resource departments can do to attract more research-active candidates into senior management positions.
