I can't get no (epistemic) satisfaction: Why the hard problem of consciousness entails a hard problem of explanation
by Brian Earp
Earp, B. D. (2012). I can’t get no (epistemic) satisfaction: Why the hard problem of consciousness entails a hard problem of explanation. Dialogues in Philosophy, Mental and Neuro Sciences, in press.

In this paper I defend Chalmers against Dennett on this point: I argue that there is a hard problem of consciousness, that it is distinct in kind from the so-called easy problems, and that it is vital for the sake of honest and productive research in the cognitive sciences to be clear about the difference. But I have my own rebuke for Chalmers on the point of explanation. Chalmers (1995, 1996) proposes to “solve” the hard problem of consciousness by positing qualia as fundamental features of the universe, alongside such ontological basics as mass and space-time. But this is an inadequate solution: to posit, I will urge, is not to explain. To bolster this view, I borrow from an account of explanation by which it must provide “epistemic satisfaction” to be considered successful (Rowlands, 2001; Campbell, 2009), and show that Chalmers’ proposal fails on this account. I conclude that research in the science of consciousness cannot move forward without greater conceptual clarity in the field.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are the single largest industrial sector of the Bangladesh economy.SMEs are renowned for vehicles of economic growth, labor intensive, poverty alleviation, enhancing the standard life. Moreover, sustainable SMEs development of Bangladesh can also role to achieve above vision by 2021. There are 142.319 million people of 147570 square kilometer area of Bangladesh. It is shown that highly density people live in Bangladesh. According to vision 2021 of Bangladesh Government, GDP can be raised 8% by 2013 and 10% by 2021. Hence, Contribution of industrial sector mainly SMEs to national GDP can be doubled by 2021. In this perspective Government of Bangladesh (GOB) has taken industrial policy2010 to increase the industry sector‘s share in GDP 40 percent from 28 percent by 2021, with the proportion of the workforce employed in the sector concurrently rising 25 percent from 16 percent of the country’s total labor force. Hence, SMEs can link for over 99 percent of private sector industrial establishments providing job opportunities to around 70 to 80 percent of the non-agricultural labor force, if hinders of SMEs, can be removed . A unified system/mathematical model can be developed for investigating the risk of sickness or failure of SMEs. For these purpose states of the art of review have been done on business model and then provide a research direction for SMEs/ business models to achieve the vision 2021 in Bangladesh.
Key words: Vision 2021 of GOB, Mathematical Model, SMEs, Research direction.

In traditional research, a gatekeeper is simply an individual with whom the researcher must negotiate access to participant subjects. Such a role implies a related condition such as ownership, stewardship or other executive authority in line with the existing cultural norms of the research setting (Sanders, 2006). Depending on the place, nature and participant body of research subjects, the role of gatekeeper can be one of simple formality to one of extraordinary complexity where sought after access is deeply embedded into the research project such as when gate-keepers are also participants and subjects. This paper focuses on research settings involving the latter and discusses the various ethical considerations that need to be taken into account when working with gatekeepers during qualitative research in zones of emerging culture conflict. The purpose for focusing on this particular area of emerging research is because of an increase in the number and type of research projects by state and international-multinational governments as well as profit/non-profit private sector NGOs. This change is a direct reflection of growing de-politicalization of intra-state conflicts by the most influential members of the international community. In emerging culture conflict research, the normative participant group consists of participants to violent conflict that involves extended loss of life and property. Their participation can be as victim, perpetrator, witness or all three simultaneously. The settings these participants are found in are usually ungoverned or under-governed spaces and involve what Hobbs (2006) calls “dangerous fieldwork”...

Employment declined substantially during the crisis year 2009, which resulted in significant income loss for the households concerned. Households were also affected by the unfavourable movement of Forint exchange rates, which led to an unexpected increase in repayment instalments on mortgages and other foreign currency denominated loans. The survey permitted analysis of both the effect of rising unemployment on incomes and the effect of the crisis on indebtedness of households
Posttraumatic Stress and Its Effective Treatment

PTSD has been called combat stress reaction, war neurosis, battle fatigue, shell shock, lack of moral fiber, the soldier’s heart, and Da Costa's Syndrome. It later came to be used to describe the symptoms of post-traumatic stress suffered by civilians who, like military personnel, can suffer from the disorder. Existing treatments have the potential to bring relief to sufferers. However, in view of the dearth of rigorous research on the subject, it would be prudent to conduct additional research in line with clearly defined target symptoms, reliable measures, and proper training of clinicians, and replicable treatment programs.

Tick... more Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are bloodsucking ectoparasitic arthropods of human and veterinary medical importance. Tick saliva has been shown to contain a wide range of bioactive molecules with vasodilatory, antihemostatic, and immunomodulatory activities. We have previously demonstrated that saliva from Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks inhibits the maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) stimulated with LPS. Here we examined the mechanism of this immune subversion, evaluating the effect of tick saliva on Toll-like receptor (TLR)-4 signalling pathway in bone marrow-derived DCs. We demonstrated that R. sanguineus tick saliva impairs maturation of DCs stimulated with LPS, a TLR-4 ligand, leading to increased production of interleukin (IL)-10 and reduced synthesis of IL-12p70 and TNF-alpha. The immunomodulatory effect of the tick saliva on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by DCs stimulated with LPS was associated with the observation that tick saliva inhibits the activation of the ERK 1/2 and p38 MAP kinases. These effects were independent of the expression of TLR-4 on the surface of DCs. Additionally, saliva-treated DCs also presented a similar pattern of cytokine modulation in response to other TLR ligands. Since the recent literature reports that several parasites evade immune responses through TLR-2-mediated production of IL-10, we evaluated the effect of tick saliva on the percentage of TLR-2(+) DCs stimulated with the TLR-2 ligand lipoteicoic acid (LTA). The data showed that the population of DCs expressing TLR-2 was significantly increased in DCs treated with LTA plus saliva. In addition, tick saliva alone increased the expression of TLR-2 in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Our data suggest that tick saliva induces regulatory DCs, which secrete IL-10 and low levels of IL-12 and TNF-alpha when stimulated by TLR ligands. Such regulatory DCs are associated with expression of TLR-2 and inhibition of ERK and p38, which promotes the production of IL-10 and thus down-modulates the host's immune response, possibly favouring susceptibility to tick infestations.
