This paper studies how and to what extent social influence design principles can persuade people to participate in... more This paper studies how and to what extent social influence design principles can persuade people to participate in sharing their feedback. For this reason, a Twitter-based system was designed with persuasive software features of social influence at its core. The effects of recognition and competition features were tested in a pilot study in two computer rooms simultaneously. Their effects on the behavior of simulated airline travelers were compared. The main result of this study provides evidence of several positive effects, especially regarding the persuasive powers of recognition in a system’s design.

Hegel, tarihi, insanların ve belli ulus ve kültürleri temsil eden devletlerin birbirlerini karşılıklı olarak tanımaları için verdikleri bir özgürlük mücadelesi olarak tanımlamıştır. Hegel’in uluslararası ilişkiler kuramı da onun özgürlük mücadelesi olarak gördüğü tarih felsefesinin içine yerleştirilmelidir. Hegel’de devletlerin birbirini tanıması esası üzerine kurulmuş ve devletlerin hem bağımsız ve özgür kaldıkları, hem de bir arada yaşamalarını mümkün kılan bir uluslararası ilişkiler kuramı vardır. Bu nedenle çağdaş toplumların özgürlük mücadelelerini modern ulus devletin sınırları içerisinde tamamlayıp tarihin sona erdiğini ileri sürmek yanlış olur. Ancak Hegel’in felsefesi uyarınca devletlerarası ilişkilerdeki özgürlük mücadelesinin gelecekte ne şekil alacağını bilmek olası değildir zira “bir felsefenin çağdaş dünyayı aşabileceğini hayal etmek, bir kimsenin Rodos’u sıçrayıp aşabileceğini sanmak kadar saçmadır”.

In this paper we explore a model of a team of intelligent agents constructing a shared interpretation of the state of their environment. Each agent is modeled as a constraint satisfaction network of the Hopfield (1982) type.
We show that in a noisy environment communication intensity often has a non-monotonic effect on team interpretive accuracy. We also investigate how team communication can correct erroneous individual interpretations stored in agents’ memories — errors concerning what they know, not only what they perceive.
We also compare the effects of different communication structures, and show that communication structure matters only when agents are cognitively heterogeneous (each has a different repertoire of interpretations in his memory), while it has only a minor impact on team performance when agents are homogeneous.

A single-system computational model of priming and recognition is applied to studies that have looked at the... more A single-system computational model of priming and recognition is applied to studies that have looked at the relationship between priming, recognition and fluency in continuous identification paradigms. The model was applied to three findings that have been interpreted as evidence for a multiple-systems account: 1) priming can occur for items not recognized, 2) the pattern of identification reaction times (RTs) to hits, misses, correct rejections and false alarms can change as a function of recognition performance, and 3) fluency effects (shorter RTs to words judged old vs. judged new) and priming effects (shorter RTs to old vs. new words) can be observed in amnesic patients at levels comparable to healthy adults despite impaired or near-chance recognition. Our simulations suggest, contrary to previous interpretations, that these results are consistent with a single-system account.

On this basis I attempt to see the critical attitude as something that is founded more on individual potentials than on formal criteria and that is essentially connected with a power of redescription: a dialectical anthropology of recognition is thus the most promising base to account for that which substantiates our critical powers.

This article aims at pointing out which are the meaning and function of saññā as they can be inferred from a careful... more This article aims at pointing out which are the meaning and function of saññā as they can be inferred from a careful reading of some relevant passages of the Pāli Canon. As far as the meaning of saññā is concerned, the discussion stresses the fact that the renderings “perception” and “apperception” seem to overinterpret the actual function/activity of saññā. Also the translations “idea” or “ideation” appear to refer only to a part or aspect of the activity of saññā. “Cognition”, moreover, should be discarded in favour of a more adequate “recognition”, a term that conceptually conveys both the senses of cognizing and naming. As regards its role within the perceptive act, saññā is said to take place after sensation (vedanā), its task being to collect the information coming from vedanā and to organize it into a datum that can be presented to, and handled by, the consiouness/mind (viññāṇa/citta). For this reason saññā is reputed to play a central role in the process of constitution of the so-called sense of Ego, as opposed to the object perceptually grasped.

In this paper I analyze interpersonal and institutional recognition and discuss the relation of different types of... more In this paper I analyze interpersonal and institutional recognition and discuss the relation of different types of recognition to various principles of social justice (egalitarianism, meritarianism, legitimate favouritism, principles of need and free exchange). Further, I try to characterize contours of good autonomous life, and ask what kind of preconditions it has. I will distinguish between five kinds of preconditions: psychological, material, cultural, intersubjective and institutional. After examining what the role of recognition is among such preconditions, and how they figure in the work of Honneth, Fraser and Taylor, I suggest a somewhat complex and hopefully rich picture of interpersonal and institutional recognition as a precondition of autonomous good life.
