[Review essay]: Islamismus, Politik der Frömmigkeit oder Post-Islamismus? Politikwissenschaftliche Narrative über islamische Politik

It examines established academic templates of narratives on (de)radicalization, resistance against modernity, and incompatibility of Islam and democracy on the basis of those concepts, analytical frameworks, premises and research questions on which these narratives extensively themselves rely. By assessing their underlying notions of politics, the article suggest a broadening of well-established analytical prisms by approaches that allow for a reconsideration not only of ‘Islamic’ formal-institutional politics, but an inclusion of discursive shifts, renegotiations of ‘Islamic’ traditions and translations of locally established practices in religious idioms into analyses of ‘Islamic politics’.

During the summer of 1979, these militants seized control of a small nationalist party, the Conceyu Nacionalista Astur (CNA), then concerned principally with the revival of the local language. Aided by the Basque group ETA (político-militar), the CNA began a series of armed robberies. The subsequent arrest of six Asturians and the public exposure of the link between Asturian and Basque nationalism caused a widespread delegitimization of violent tactics, steering most Asturianistas towards more moderate methods in their pursuit of change. The literature on nationalism focuses on cases that developed sustained conflicts, but it is equally important to understand why other movements largely rejected the use of arms.
Regulating the 'Dark Web': How a Two-Fold Approach Can tackle Peer-to-Peer Radicalisation

Technical regulation of online content is difficult and may be counter-productive, driving forums deeper underground or alienating users. Tim Stevens argues that adopting a social approach that educates and empowers online communities could have more success.

In this chapter we analyze the shift from a politicized identity to a radicalized identity of (members of) the Hofstad network. Our findings are based on an analysis of texts written by the Hofstad network by Meijer who acted as an expert witness at one of the trials involving the network. We also include observations and transcripts of chats and online debates.
After introducing the Hofstad network, we provide an analysis of the “assimilationist” discourse and the rise of the Salafi movement as a background for the politicization and radicalization of the members of the Hofstad network. This process is analyzed from a social movement perspective, following Gamson (1992), by focusing on their perception of injustice, the agency of the people, and their identity.
