As audience to these, it is our responsibility to exercise "conscious choice" when evaluating the ethical issues they bring forth in both media and society.

Dataveillance and e-surveillance. A critical case study of the usage of Social Netwroking Sites by students in Sassari

The paper presents some theoretical considerations arise from empirical research conducted on the students from the University of Sassari, Italy (n: 1047). Students have little knowledge about the laws in Italy that regulate surveillance and they underestimate the extent of dataveillance and e-surveillance. Some interesting findings include: only 30.9% of respondents were aware that Facebook is always allowed to collect and store data on their information behaviour (meaning that around 70% didn’t know) and only 23.9% knew that Facebook is allowed to reuse and resell personal data (so more than 3 out of 4 students didn’t know). However, half of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that private firms have strong interests in gathering the personal data of Internet users. Furthermore, 58.5% knew that the advertising clients of Facebook are allowed to gather data on users’ information consumption. In considering this date within a wider framework of data surveillance, this paper also explores the connexions between such attitudes and knowledge of and attitudes towards surveillance by social networking sites.

They are self-organized, self-configured and self-controlled infrastructure-less networks. Nodes can communicate with each other without any pre-planned or a base station. Disseminating information securely between these nodes in such networks however is a challenging task, particularly when the information is confidential. Revealing such information to anyone else other than the intended nodes could be highly damaging, especially in military applications where keeping the message secret from adversaries is essential. In this paper we present our novel framework for privacy control in mobile ad hoc networks in which privacy policies are attached to messages as they are send between peers. We evaluate our framework using the Network Simulator (NS-2) to provide and check whether the privacy and confidentiality of the originator are met. For this we implemented the privacy enforcement as an NS2 agent that manages and enforces the policies attached to packets at every node in the MANET.
Who Do They Think They’re Talking To? Framings of the Audience by Social Media Users

It draws on an analysis of in-depth interviews with 23 personal bloggers. They were found to have limited interest in gathering information about their audiences, appearing to assume that readers are sympathetic. A comprehensive and grounded typology of imagined relationships with audiences was devised. Although their blogs were all public, some interviewees appeared to frame their blogging practice as primarily self-directed, with their potential audiences playing a marginal role. These factors provide one explanation for some forms of potentially risky self-exposure observed among social media users.

Cross-cultural Communication: Arab and Welsh students’ use of Facebook

This study focuses on the major sociocultural attributes of communication via Facebook in two different geographical settings. It identifies cross-cultural differences among two different student cohorts in the UAE and the UK.
Sociocultural specificities were addressed by means of quantitative surveying complemented by qualitative interviewing. The social information processing (SIP) theory and Geert Hofstede theory of ‘cultural dimensions’ represented the
epistemological framework for the study.
The findings indicate that although the users shared similar responses in terms of their preferences and uses, the study shows that they differ in certain key points related to online behaviour and communication modes (e.g. preferences for contacting friends), conceptualization of Facebook (an extension to university life or a portal to the world) and issues of privacy (expressing oneself openly). These deviations reflect
essentially a cultural dissimilarity, which is a core point of the study.
Communication scholars are encouraged to study the research implications of new media, especially regarding differences in culture, as it represents a new avenue in the genre of media studies.

Social networks – access all areas?

The existence of a resulting risk is clearly evidenced by users’ willingness to become online friends with total strangers, giving full access to their profile in the process. The knock-on consequences of this could range from a basic invasion of privacy through to more active exploitation and identity theft.
Matlock: A Location Obfuscation Technique for Accuracy-Restricted Applications

At the same time, users have made their locations more available than ever, representing a major privacy problem, as attackers could easily determine their victims’ common paths or actual locations. As a result, some techniques have been designed to protect the users’ private information while allowing Location Based Service systems (LBS) to continue growing. Location obfuscation is a technique that alters, substitutes, or generalizes the real location of the users to protect them against malicious attacks. Moreover, there are activities that require a high level of accuracy while also maintaining the protection of the location, such as fleet management or transportation of valuables. In this work, a light-weight and fully reversible location obfuscation technique named Matlock is presented. Matlock, based on matrix obfuscation, requires low computation per operation and hides the location in both spatial and temporal dimensions. The performance evaluation shows how this technique alters the location of paths from different geographical regions, produces a non-morphologically similar path to the original path, and enerates increasing distance functions between the original and the obfuscated paths, which together should reduce the probability of using estimation techniques to perform deobfuscation of the information.

Seen by:Keeping the Secrets of the Dead? An Evaluation of the Statutory Framework for Access to Information About Deceased Persons
Co-authored with Maeve McDonagh, published in Legal Studies, Vol. 31, pp. 42-70, 2011

This article examines the normative and legal issues raised by access to information about the dead and evaluates the statutory framework. It draws on philosophical and legal sources which support the claim that the dead are owed a moral and legal duty of confidence. However, it also shows that this is not an absolute duty and it identifies the public and private justifications which favor the provision of access to information about the dead. It argues that the current statutory framework is excessively restrictive and that it fails to provide an appropriate context within which interests favoring access may be considered. Accordingly, it argues that the law needs to be reformed and that a specific legislative framework dealing with access to information about the dead should be introduced. The article concludes by setting out some preliminary suggestions regarding the possible form of such a legislative framework.
A Model to Increase the Trust in Service Oriented Architecture

System security is as... more Disregarding any specific IT system, it can be used only when it satisfies security concerns. System security is as important as its functionality because, although it may provide too many features, if users can’t trust to the results and data privacy, system is not reliable at all. Along with increased use of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) as a preferred paradigm for developing business needs, attackers are motivated to concentrate on founding SOA vulnerabilities more than the past. Prominent specifications in nature of SOA like openness and services autonomy have the most security risks. Although during the past few years, many solutions have been emerged to enforce the security goals, they are not enough to achieve desirable security and we need more researches in this area. In this paper we present two approaches for increasing the trust in SOA. At first, we use a hardware named Trusted Platform Module to increase sensitive data privacy. As the second approach, we propose a mechanism for monitoring service providers’ functionality to ensure that previously verified functionality is not changed by threads.
