(Brevia, 26 March 2010, p. 1613) reported on an Australian tyrannosauroid, represented by a pubis from the late Early Cretaceous of Victoria. However, our examination of this specimen reveals that the critical character used for this referral is not present. We contend that the bone likely belongs to a currently recognized group of Australian theropod or another group not currently known.

Seen by:Historical Do-Over: Can Advancing Technology Help Preserve the Past?

As a critic with a deep interest in archives and preservation efforts, this author is particularly interested in how technology can assist in the preservation of the past. Happily, there have already been positive strides in this direction "efforts that will hopefully continue in the future. This article will detail three such efforts: Photosynth preservation, the use of hypertext archives andlastly, preservation in virtual worlds. Each of these efforts work to solve two key problems, the fact that it is impossible to archive or otherwise save every object, and the issue of access.

It shows how foresters in India maintained a strong romanticism and love of nature. This view challenges the existing historiography that sees foresters as utilitarian scientific experts with little interest in nature. It also challenges the idea that India can be compared with American environmental history, especially through the lens of the 'conservation' and 'preservation' movements.

Preserving the electroacoustic music legacy: a case study of the SalMar Construction at the University of Illinois

In the summer of 2008 the Sousa Archives and Center for American
Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign acquired the
papers of Salvatore Martirano (1927–1995), avant-garde composer, faculty
member, and performer. This case study examines how the new electroacoustic
compositional techniques present in Martirano’s papers and
his ground-breaking electronic music instrument, the Sal-Mar Construc -
tion, dramatically challenged the archivists to explore access and preservation
practices for this unique cultural record. Context plays a key role
in the preservation of electroacoustic compositions and instruments,
considering that these tend to become ephemeral works of art once the
composer ceases to maintain them in working order.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the awareness about digital preservation and what must be done towards preserving valuable original digital material. The paper also aims to discuss the use of metadata principles and the implementation of tools for the preservation of documents stored on personal computers.
Design/methodology/approach – Data loss prevention starts with the creation of a digital object. However, methods to minimize the loss of digital data are often ignored, the use of metadata structures embedded in digital objects from the outset thereof are recommended as a starting point towards good preservation principles. The need to create awareness on the issue of digital preservation was promoted by the authors at various occasions during 2008, as the number of incidents of data loss and costs involved continue to be of concern to all involved. Whether the loss occurs by a malicious attempt, or an inadvertent mistake, it can be diminishing either personally or to the institute/company where it occurs. Data were collected through a digital questionnaire and literature studies were done on several strategies, policies and best practices. Personal visits to libraries actively working on digital preservation and curation formed a basis for conducting the study. The implementation of tools that can be used to preserve and retrieve digital content by individuals was also investigated.
Findings – Digital objects should be archived with metadata about the object and the creation thereof. Metadata need not necessarily be structured and controlled when used by individuals or small groups for preservation of self owned data. The metadata content, however, should describe the object, the method of creation and technologies used in the creation. All changes to the document should be captured in the preservation metadata. Future access to digital content does not only depend on one preservation method but on a sequence of strategies and methods applied to the digital content.
Originality/value – The paper provides a broad overview of certain aspects that must be considered when implementing digital preservation strategies. The value of metadata needs to be widely accepted and implemented and the use thereof promoted to creators of personal digital objects.
