The communities represented in fiction are, necessarily, imagined communities; but if a novel is a representation of an imagined community then so, as many recent writers have argued, are our ideas of nationhood. The nation, that is, is not a material entity like a country or a state. It is an invisible and (at least partly) theoretical construction which elicits powerful emotional and imaginative identifications.
The idea of nation and how colonial modernity brought that in is an interesting thing to discuss. This essay is about the beginning of post-Modernism in Malayalam Novel and how it responds to the question of nation.

In this essay, I would like to discuss modernism, both as a cultural category and as a literary phenomenon based on the context of Malayalam literature. I would like to look at modernism as a force which gave birth to new literary and cultural aspects. At the outset, it has to be recognized that modernism and modernity are related but not identical. While talking about modernism, I believe that an average post-colonial Indian has two modernisms to deal with – the modernism of the west and the modernism of his/her own ‘region’. Though the modernity of his/her region is connected to that of its colonial master, literary modernism seems to have a difference from where it has been taken or borrowed. Here, the emphasis goes to the literary modernism happened in Malayalam Literature in the 1960s and I would like to discuss about certain aspects of it along with its significance and relation with translation.

The Nature of the Mimetic Conceit of the Complicit in Murakami Haruki’s A Wild Sheep Chase.

I assert that the act of appropriating the Western form works as complicit colonization of the cultural contruct of the text in the form of a mimetic conceit. I discuss this in terms of the namelessness and the marginalization of the subject-position of the feminine. Through this discussion, I attempt to demonstrate how the constituted text of the scribe in Japanese Literature placed under the “complicit” and becomes something that is not of, and thus must mediate the loss of its signifier with the notion of disappearance as its germination.
