As Políticas Sociais em Portugal (1910-1926)

PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Portugal, I República, políticas sociais.
KEYWORDS: Portugal, First Republic, social politics.
This research aims to study the State social policies during the period. The fields under study include, for that period, the public politics concerning: the labour laws; the first legislation about the obligatory social insurance; the public assistance; the health; the housing. Our aim is to know the different phases of that politics with its conception in theory, the foreign influences which came to the country in that field, the legislative framework, the general approval and its results and evaluation. On the other hand, our research is also framed by the economical and social structural period in which the Portuguese First Republic (1910-1926) is inserted. Through the particular study of the social politics promoted by the State, we want to obtain a general appraisal considering the Portuguese First Republic regime as a whole. By having also in mind the economical and social structure and chronology, we think that it is possible to evaluate the potential differences between the intentions before the approval of those politics, its application and its final judgement according its success or failure. Only by putting in to analysis all these factors on a wide perspective we can obtain the adequate explanations to questioning this period in Portugal in this issue.
The Portuguese debt crisis: institutional tangles and the EU metabolic trap

The majority of policies set in motion (by governments of both parties in central axis, as well as by the Troika formed by the IMF, ECB and European Commission) aim at creating favorable conditions to attract foreign investment (for example through so called labour flexibilization) or reducing public expenditure in order to pay off the growing debts (with increasing interest rates). However, they are far from achieving the necessary economic growth to repay these debts. In fact, rather than providing a solution to the debt crisis, they are actually degrading the social conditions and depleting the material support of the economy. Overviewing the metabolic history of the Portuguese economy in the recent decades and unfolding the tangled web of public private institutional relations, might provide better answers in dealing with the crisis. Proper answers can hardly rely on the promotion of economic growth, a flag which, until now, has been held from the left to the right of the Portuguese political spectrum.

Polyamory awareness-raising: An auto-ethnographic account of a round-table on polyamory and lesbianism
Paper presented at the Sexual Cultures Conference, London, 2012

As we’ll see, conflicting political and identity agendas might create tension between different minorities, and even the reinstatement of (homo-)normativity. We claim that only through debate, exposure and recognition (which mixes research, scientific dissemination and activism) can we think «about an issue in a way that takes account of the perspectives of others» (Young, 2000), but that the modes of performing debate also need to be critically reflected upon, keeping in sight the ethical concern for the intimate citizenship (Plummer, 1994) of those represented (and of those absent).

Abstract
Human societies over the centuries have always had a close relation to the rivers they supported in one way less or more sustainable different kinds of economies. Currently rivers provide a wealth of outdoor recreational activities. In post-modern society and in post-fordist economy we can assist of a widespread of services related to water environments and of an emergent new form of tourism: river tourism. In Portugal in most recent years this trend is evident, many of small enterprises find in local water resources and in leisure and tourism activities new economic opportunities for employment and income selling emotions and experiences, creating facilities, namely associated with rivers.
Rivers usually offer two kinds of tourism activities, one of them are located on the river banks, beside the rivers, and others take place on the rivers. The most typical activities that we can find on the rivers are tours and sightseeing cruises – short or long distances, downstream or upstream, these activities always offer an exciting experience through scenic and cultural landscapes, including natural and built environments that changed along its shores – and water sports, most of them are identified as forms of adventure tourism like white-water rafting, canyoning, amongst others. Many of these activities could be included in niche tourism and for this river tourism potential the natural feature of water is very important.
This chapter comprises some topics structured into three parts. The first part of the chapter attempts briefly to embrace the importance that rivers has been through the history and the role that water resources play in leisure society and in outdoor recreation activities. Focus on river tourism introduces a range of ways of seeing this form of tourism. Secondly we’ll explore the water resources in Portugal and related them to the leisure and tourism enterprises that promotes in 2010 activities on aquatic environments, representing and interpreting the potential of national territory. Finally we will try to present some guidelines for an action strategy for sustainable river tourism development, present specific actions to be taken by public agents and stakeholders to reduce the conflicts between tourist activity and the environment and some strategies to improve the river tourism.

With the fall of the rural world, landscapes regain a remarkable expression in the framing of the memory and in the construction of the imaginary of a society that redesigns its image and projects itself in time, past and future, and is forced to question its present.
In the demand of the Tagus Valley landscape representations, picture postcards were elected as primordial research source. To find them required a long and persisting course, identifying local collectors and getting their assent to study their collections, what has revealed new perspectives of inquiry, multiplying the odds of looking the site and its sought objects.
Defying us to examine the perspectives on the place, both in past and present, postcards are the axis of a research where we outlook the modulations of the gaze: the people’s gaze on their space and about themselves, on how they intend to be looked at by the others, how they see the others and how they are seen by them.
This way, it was intended to contribute to the identification of processes that determine the construction of a place, the delimitation of a territory, the recognition of a landscape, and hence, the production of a sense of belonging, where a situated identity is discoursed and represented.

This study is a diagnosis of current situation of healthcare information systems, with special attention to the archival information systems in Portugal. It is a recent perspectivation of archival information systems in hospitals, essential to the preservation of documentation and to improve future historical research in public health, not to mention its importance to the management of institutions and aid in clinical practice based on evidence. The methodology to be used, in addition to the literature review, is based on critical analysis of the results of a questionnaire sent to a representative sample of Portuguese hospitals, after due statistical treatment.
Inventory of ectomycorrhizal fungi associated with a «relic» holm-oak tree (Quercus rotundifolia) in two successive winters
Pinho-Almeida et al Documents Mycologiques 115, 57-68 (1999)

A «relic» tree of this species, left from a montado stand that was replaced by cereals decades ago and now surrounded by Eucalyptus globulus, was visited during two winter carpophore fruiting seasons to scrutinize the ectomycorrhizal species associated with its root system. The sampled sporophores were identified and mapped relative to the oak trunk. Of thirty nine different higher fungi that have been tentatively identified after four gatherings, twenty nine were probably ectomycorrhizal. Russula sp. (a total of ten species) dominated in the first gathering of each season while Lactarius cremor and Helvella lacunosa dominated in the second of the first and second season, respectively. Practically none of the holm oak-associated mutualistic or facultative species were found in the surrounding Eucalyptus plantation. This study will be continued and extended to other locations in the long term, in order to provide data on the ecology of the holm oak ectomycorrhizal associates and to support the molecular identification of fungal isolates obtained from holm oak ectomycorrhizas.
