This paper focuses on the preliminary evaluation of expressions of moral sentiment under conditions of cultural pluralism. The advance of science and technology puts ever new power over nature in human hands, and if this new power is to more fully serve human ends, then it must become the means or material of human virtue. This prospect poses the question of the relationship between power and virtue, and equally, the question of how scientific advances may be understood to enter into a pluralism of moral doctrines and deliberations. Taking a page from the philosophy of science, the present approach examines the relationship between scientific advances and moral evaluations of developing practices as mediated by contemporary accounts of the virtues of hypotheses. If we conceive of expressions of moral sentiment as hypotheses for the amendment or expansion of existing moral doctrines in the light of new possibilities for action, then this suggests that expressions of moral sentiment may be evaluated, in a preliminary way, by reference to standard lists of the virtues of hypotheses: refutability, conservatism, modesty or simplicity, precision, elegance, and generality. Expressions of moral sentiment are subject to preliminary evaluation, on cognitive grounds, by reference to their prospective integration and/or modification of on-going moral traditions.

This article describes and analyses the regulatory frameworks
and the current pluralism protection policies in the United States and several countries of the European Union (Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain). The data obtained allowed a qualitative assessment to be carried out, through a comparative analysis, in order to identify certain similarities and some significant differences.
Thus, it was found that pluralism protection is a common denominator in the communication policies of these countries. However, regulatory and legislative differences depend on social, geographical and media contexts, and time variations in the
application of policies depend on audiovisual media market liberalisation processes.
External Pluralism Protection in Five EU Countries and the U.S.: The Regulatory Authorities’ Views.

This paper presents the outcome of in-depth interviews with members of six independent audiovisual regulatory authorities. They were questioned about the assessment of measures being taken to protect external pluralism in their respective countries, and about the problems and shortcomings they encounter during their implementation. In spite of the difficulties that arise when trying to compare different national realities and to gather qualitative data from legal bodies, this paper draws several conclusions on current policy trends for the protection of pluralism.
The division of labor in science: the tradeoff between specialisation and diversity
Economics is a typical resource for social epistemology and the division of labour is a common theme for economics. As... more Economics is a typical resource for social epistemology and the division of labour is a common theme for economics. As such it should come as no surprise that the present paper turns to economics to formulate a view on the dynamics of scientific communities, with precursors such as Kitcher (1990), Goldman and Shaked (1991) and Hull (1988). But although the approach is similar to theirs, the view defended is different. Mäki (2005) points out that the lessons philosophers draw from economics can go either way depending on the model chosen. Thus, the aims of this paper are (1) to illustrate this flexibility by proposing an alternative model which assumes increasing returns to adoption in science rather than the decreasing returns present in the aforementioned contributions; and (2) to outline the implications of this view for scientific pluralism and institutional design.

William James held that the “difference between monism and pluralism is perhaps the most pregnant of all the differences in philosophy” (WB 5),1 and he himself came down firmly on the side of a thoroughgoing philosophical (epistemological, metaphysical, and value) pluralism. James was one of the first thinkers to articulate a comprehensive philosophical vision incorporating what we would now find it natural to call a conceptual scheme pluralism. In doing so he introduced conceptions that have since become the mother-tongue of our philosophical thought. In this essay I propose to examine the nature and sources of James’s wide-ranging pluralism by focusing in particular on the account he offers of the role of concepts within perceptual experience. What view of the nature of concepts separated James from his monistic philosophical opponents and underpinned his own attempts to defend a general philosophical pluralism? In addition to its intrinsic historical interest as a prime mover in the development of pluralist conceptions throughout the 20th century, the case of James will also serve to underscore the fact that some of the most difficult and important issues raised by the concept of pluralism have their sources in the seemingly more arcane question of how exactly it is that concepts enable us to grasp any truths at all.
A mudança nas ciências segundo Paul Feyerabend

This work is a general exposition of the Austrian philosophy of science Paul Feyerabend (1924-1994) regarding the problem of scientific change. Feyerabend's thought develops into methodological and epistemological discussions marked by a
dispute between logical positivism and critical rationalism. Contention that sees the new historicist element emerging whose introduction, among others, was due to Thomas
Kuhn and Paul Feyerabend. We organize our text to address the feyerabendian criticism of the empiricist model of theoretical change, namely the logic of reduction (Nagel) and explanation (Hempel and Oppenheim). In our first chapter we show the Feyerabend's rejection of the idea of neutrality of the observational language and the thesis of consistency and stability of the terms required, according to him, by the instrumentalist interpretation of theories. Our second chapter makes a similar path regarding to critical rationalism. The falsificationist model is shown insufficient for historical and
methodological reasons. We discussed in our text the attribution of the "relativist deviation" to the historicist approach of the author. We present Feyerabend's opposition to the notion of verisimilitude. Against this idea, the philosopher states that a
comparison of content ignores that a theoretical change can cause an ontological change. Our third chapter develops better the incipient ideas of our earlier chapters, in order to situate feyerabendian philosophy within his methodological option for realism. In this last chapter we discuss the hypothetical realism, incommensurability and his infamous theoretical anarchism, concluding on the possibility of a new rationality attentive to the themes introduced by the author.

This paper tackles the plurality of scientific models in constructing scientific theories, assuming this plurality as a condition for fruitful theorizing. The treatment
of this topic is carried out taking as a base Max Black’s proposals on scientific models, as presented in his article Models and Archetypes. In this reference, Black characterizes
three classes of models: analogical ones, mathematical ones and theoretical ones. Some distinctions introduced by Black are applied to the contrast between notions pertaining
to two mainstream theories in contemporary linguistics: generative linguistics and cognitive linguistics. From this contrast, the aim is to relativize both the – apparently
constitutive – commitment of these theories with the use of certain kinds of models, and the rejection of models of a different kind. This relativization is introduced according to the descriptive and explicative advantages that a plural use of models may
entail for the contrasting theories.
