Did King Alfred really go to Epsom? Historians, linguists and the search for Hebbeshamm

A brief paper challenging the accepted identification of Hebbeshamm, the promulgation place of a charter of King Alfred from the year 882, as Epsom in Surrey. The charter is of particular interest because it refers to an otherwise-unrecorded land-based campaign against the Danes, and placing the location in Essex rather than Surrey fits better with recent scholarship assessing the few other known facts from a poorly-documented period of Anglo-Saxon history. More generally, it highlights the lack of heed historians and place-name scholars have paid to one another's work, and the benefits inter-disciplinarity can bring to historical and archaeological research.
(The paper as you find it here is unpublished, but my longer-term intention is to revise it into a form more suitable for national publication in an appropriate journal - as such readers' comments and criticisms will be gratefully received.)
